Camping near Mason, Texas
Mason sits in the western Texas Hill Country at the edge of the Llano Uplift, roughly an hour north of Fredericksburg and within reach of Enchanted Rock, Brady Lake, and the Llano and James Rivers. The town markets itself as the Gem of the Hill Country and is one of the few places where rockhounds legally search for Texas topaz. RV travelers use Mason as a quiet base for river days, granite hikes, and small-town square strolls without the crowds of Fredericksburg or the Highland Lakes.
Campground options near town are a mix of private riverfront parks, resort-style properties, and municipal sites. Dos Rios RV Park sits at the confluence of the Llano and James Rivers with full-hookup sites, cabins, and glamping tents. SKYE Texas Hill Country Resort offers a resort-style property with pools, ponds, and premium RV pads. Heart Of Texas RV Park serves travelers passing through the region on the Brady side, Richards Park provides a low-key city-park option in nearby Brady with shaded full-hookup sites, and Brady Lake Campground opens up 25 miles of shoreline for swimming and fishing.
Things to do near Mason
The Llano and James Rivers draw most RVers. Both are shallow, spring-fed streams suited to kayaking, tubing, and bass fishing, and Dos Rios RV Park rents watercraft on site. Topaz hunting on permitted local ranches is a Mason specialty, and Katemcy Rocks offers hundreds of acres of granite off-road terrain for jeep and side-by-side drivers.
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area lies about 40 minutes south, with the summit hike, dark-sky programs, and popular rock climbing routes. Fredericksburg adds wineries, German bakeries, and the National Museum of the Pacific War within an hour's drive. In town, families walk the historic Mason Square, visit the Mason County Museum, and eat local barbecue before returning to camp.

Spring is the most popular season. March through May brings mild days, peak Hill Country wildflowers, and reliable river flows for paddling. Weekends and school breaks book out weeks in advance, especially around Easter and any bluebonnet weekend. Enchanted Rock frequently hits capacity, and Texas Parks and Wildlife requires day-use passes reserved in advance for busy weekends, school breaks, and holidays.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs regularly in the mid-90s Fahrenheit. Rivers and shaded riverfront sites at parks like Dos Rios are the main draw. Hydration, early hikes, and burn-ban awareness matter; Mason County periodically issues outdoor burn bans during dry stretches.
Fall cools quickly through October and November and is a strong shoulder season for hiking, stargazing, and quieter campgrounds. September can be the wettest month of the year, with tropical moisture pushing inland. Winter is short but real: overnight lows can drop below freezing in January, occasional hard freezes can affect water hookups, and some private parks scale back services, though Dos Rios and SKYE Texas Hill Country Resort operate year-round.
How to book a campsite
Private parks around Mason take direct reservations. Dos Rios RV Park, SKYE Texas Hill Country Resort, and Heart Of Texas RV Park all book online through their own sites or third-party platforms, and holiday weekends often fill months out. Snowbird and monthly stays are common at Dos Rios and other Hill Country parks, so long-stay availability tightens in late winter.
Brady Lake Campground takes reservations by phone through the City of Brady or online through Campspot, and Richards Park is a Brady city facility handled locally. For Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, campsites reserve through the Texas Parks and Wildlife system up to five months ahead; note that Enchanted Rock is tent and walk-in camping only, with no RV, pop-up, or vehicle camping allowed inside the park.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into Mason are two-lane state highways, and many riverfront campgrounds sit down gravel access roads with low-water crossings on the James River side. Drivers of larger rigs should confirm site length and turn-in details with the park before arrival. Cell service is inconsistent outside town, and reviewers regularly note weak signal at riverfront sites.
Expect dark skies, wildlife (deer, ringtails, armadillos), and warm afternoons that cool sharply after sunset in shoulder seasons. Most private parks are pet friendly with leash rules, and full hookups are standard at Dos Rios and SKYE, while public sites at Brady Lake mix RV hookups, screened cabanas, and primitive tent spots. Bring bug spray in warm months, layers for winter nights, and reservations locked in before arrival.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Mason, TX
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Mason, TX?
RV rental in Mason is one of the best Hill Country values, with nightly rates typically ranging from about $90 for a compact travel trailer to $250+ for a larger Class A motorhome. Most travel trailers and Class C motorhomes land in the $125 to $185 per night range, and weeklong bookings often unlock discounts directly from the host. To find a cheap RV rental Mason travelers love, filter by your dates first (midweek stays beat weekends), then sort by price low to high. Visiting outside the wildflower peak in April or the Round-Up Rodeo weekend in mid-July can shave 15 to 25 percent off rates while still giving you gorgeous Llano River weather.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mason,TexasDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Mason, Texas?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Mason for nearly every rig on RVezy. Texas only requires a non-commercial Class B license for motorhomes with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating over 26,000 pounds, and almost every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on the platform falls well below that limit. You will need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID during booking, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit and you are set to explore the Hill Country.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Mason RV rental?
Every RV rental in Mason booked through RVezy comes with a built-in renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Llano River backroads with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, with different coverage tiers available. You choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host, so you can pick what fits your comfort zone and budget. If you are planning to drive out to the Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve, opting for a higher coverage tier is an easy way to relax and enjoy the bat emergence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Mason RV trip?
Booking is low risk because RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a grace-period window after booking where you can get a full refund. Specific refund amounts depend on how far ahead of your trip start date you cancel, and RVezy also has accommodations built in for unexpected events. You will not see a cancellation policy on individual listings because it is handled at the platform level, keeping things consistent for every Mason RV trip. If your plans shift, log into your RVezy account or contact support to walk through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Mason?
Yes, Mason is one of the most dog-loving corners of the Hill Country, and pet-friendly RV rental Mason options are easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you will see hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots (some charge a small pet fee, which you will see upfront). Dos Rios RV Park on the Llano River is famously dog-friendly with riverside walks, and Fort Mason City Park has shaded pull-thru sites where leashed pups are welcome. Stop by the James River Ice House across from Dos Rios for a patio meal your pup can join.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mason,Texas&IsPetFriendly=trueCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Mason?
Yes, RV delivery in Mason is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a motorhome on their first trip. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your rig at Dos Rios RV Park, Fort Mason City Park, or a private ranch site, then walk you through hookups, the awning, and the kitchen before they leave. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location, and you will see the total before you book. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, message the host with your campground address, and you can show up to a fully set-up RV ready to enjoy.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mason,Texas&Delivery=trueHow far can I drive on a Mason RV rental, and what road trips are popular?
You've got serious range from Mason, and many hosts offer generous daily mileage allowances or even an RV rental with unlimited mileage. From Mason, popular RV road trip from Mason routes include Fredericksburg (about 36 miles south) for wineries and German cuisine, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area (about 24 miles southeast) for granite-dome hiking, Llano (about 36 miles east) for legendary BBQ at Cooper's, Austin (about 110 miles east) for live music, and Garner State Park on the Frio River (about 130 miles south) for tubing. Pro tip: ask your host about their mileage cap before booking, and stack a Fredericksburg day trip with an Enchanted Rock sunset for one of the best Hill Country loops.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/enchanted-rockWhere are the best campgrounds near Mason, TX for an RV?
You have great choices for RV camping in Mason. Dos Rios RV Park sits at the confluence of the Llano and James Rivers with full-hookup waterfront sites, kayak rentals, and dark stargazing skies. Fort Mason City Park is a budget-friendly in-town option with shaded sites and hookups. About 30 minutes east, Castell General Store on the Llano River offers laid-back riverside camping with live music weekends. For state parks, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area (tent and primitive only) is about 45 minutes south, while South Llano River State Park in Junction (about 60 miles west) has RV sites with water and 30/50-amp electric. Book Dos Rios early for spring wildflower weekends.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/south-llano-riverWhen is the best time of year to plan a Mason RV trip?
Mason's sweet spot is mid-March through late May and again from late September through November. Spring brings the legendary Hill Country wildflower bloom (bluebonnets peak late March to mid-April) with daytime highs in the 70s and 80s. Fall delivers crisp 60s-to-80s weather, fewer crowds, and golden cypress trees along the Llano River. Summers are hot (July and August routinely hit 94 to 100 F with heat index over 107), but evenings cool down nicely and the Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve bat emergence runs mid-May through October. Winters are mild with highs near 60 F, making Mason a fantastic snowbird stop. For a perfect window, aim for late October when the Texas Topaz hunting weather is gorgeous.
weather.gov/ewx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Mason?
You've got this, and Mason is actually one of the friendliest places in Texas for first time renting an RV. Roads are wide, traffic is light, and the Hill Country backroads between Mason, Fredericksburg, and Llano are gentle rolling terrain with no mountain passes. Every RVezy host does a walkthrough at pickup, showing you the propane, water system, leveling, and tow setup, and you can text them anytime during your trip. If a 32-foot Class C feels like too much, start with a Class B campervan or a 20-foot travel trailer. Pro tip: practice a few right turns in the H-E-B parking lot in Fredericksburg before heading out to your campsite.
txdot.gov/safety/driving-laws.htmlWhat happens if I break down during my Mason RV rental?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Ranch Road 2389 or a dead battery at the trailhead is a phone call away from being handled. The roadside team coordinates towing, jump-starts, lockouts, tire changes, and fuel delivery across Mason County and the surrounding Hill Country. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app for quick questions, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after the trip. Save the roadside number to your phone before you leave Mason's town square so you have it ready even in spots with patchy cell service.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Mason RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Travel across U.S. state lines is totally fine on RVezy, so feel free to plan a route from Mason up to Palo Duro Canyon, east to Louisiana, or north to Oklahoma. However, travel into Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because the protection package and insurance don't extend across the border, even though Mason is only about 200 miles from Del Rio. Many Mason guests build big Texas loops instead, hitting Big Bend National Park (about 380 miles west), Padre Island National Seashore (about 360 miles southeast), or Caprock Canyons State Park. Confirm your route with your host when you book so they can plan mileage.
travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Mexico.htmlHow much should I budget for fuel on a Mason RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables, and Mason is small-town Texas, so gas prices here tend to run a bit higher than Austin or San Antonio. Plan to fill up in Fredericksburg or Llano on your way in when prices are better. Realistic fuel economy is about 7 to 9 miles per gallon for a Class A, 8 to 12 mpg for a Class C, 15 to 20 mpg for a Class B campervan, and 10 to 14 mpg for a truck towing a travel trailer. For a typical 4-day, 400-mile Hill Country loop in a Class C, budget around $150 to $200 for gas. The Stripes station on Highway 87 in Mason is the most convenient fill-up before heading to Dos Rios.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Mason?
For the most popular Mason County campgrounds, book as early as possible. Texas State Parks (including Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and South Llano River State Park) open reservations exactly 5 months in advance at 8 a.m. Central through the official Texas Parks & Wildlife reservation system, and Enchanted Rock weekends in spring and fall often sell out within minutes. Private parks like Dos Rios and Fort Mason City Park typically take bookings 6 to 12 months out, with spring wildflower weekends (late March through April) and the July 4th rodeo weekend filling fastest. Pro tip: if your dates are locked, set a free cancellation notification on the TPWD site to grab any released sites.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-reservation-informationWhat are driving conditions like around Mason, TX?
Driving around Mason is genuinely relaxing compared to most of Texas. State Highway 87 and US 377 are the main routes in, and they're well-maintained two-lane roads through rolling Hill Country with light traffic. Watch for low-water crossings on James River Road and other ranch roads after heavy rain (signs are clearly marked), and stay alert at dawn and dusk for white-tailed deer, which are abundant in Mason County. Cell signal can drop on remote backroads, so download offline maps before you leave town. Pro tip: avoid driving the gravel road to the Eckert Bat Cave at night, save that drive for the late-afternoon bat emergence when visibility is great.
drivetexas.org/What amenities do Mason area campgrounds offer for RVs?
Most established RV parks around Mason offer full hookups, meaning water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electric right at your site, plus Wi-Fi and laundry at many locations. Dos Rios RV Park has full hookups, a dump station, potable water fill, hot showers, and direct river access for swimming and kayaking. Fort Mason City Park offers electric and water hookups with a shared bathhouse. If you stay somewhere primitive like Enchanted Rock or a Hipcamp ranch site, plan to dump and refill water at a full-service park on your way out. Lowe's Market on Fort McKavitt Street in Mason is your one-stop for groceries, ice, and firewood.
dosriosrvpark.com/What's included inside a typical Mason RV rental?
Mason RV rentals come ready for adventure. Expect a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, freezer, stovetop, microwave, sink, pots, pans, and dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable sleeping for anywhere from 2 to 10 depending on the rig, climate control with both AC and furnace, and seatbelts for everyone riding while driving. Most motorhome rental Mason listings also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator or solar setup so you can run AC even when you're off-grid at a ranch site. Many hosts throw in linens, towels, and camp chairs as standard. Check the listing's amenities list and message the host if you need something specific like a high chair or pack-and-play.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for a Mason RV rental?
Hosts in Mason offer some great add-ons that can make your trip easier. Common extras include camping kits (chairs, table, outdoor rug), kitchen kits (dishes, cooking gear), bedding packages, generators, propane refills, bike racks, and even kayak or tube rentals for the Llano River. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in or near Mason, but many also offer delivery to Dos Rios, Fort Mason City Park, or your private ranch booking. Mileage policies vary by host: some offer 100 free miles per day, others provide unlimited mileage. Pro tip: ask about a Fredericksburg drop-off if your trip ends with wine-tasting day, some hosts will arrange one-way drop within the Hill Country.
tdlr.texas.gov/How do payment and the security deposit work for my Mason RV rental?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, and your money is held safely until your trip starts, so the host is not paid until you have picked up the RV. A refundable security deposit is held on your card a few days before pickup; the exact amount is shown on the listing and typically ranges from $500 to $1,500 for Mason-area rentals. As long as the RV comes back in the same condition with no damage or rule violations, the deposit is released after your trip. Take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off to keep things smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's the one local insider tip every Mason RV traveler should know?
Here is the secret most visitors miss: Mason County is one of the few places in Texas where you can hunt for Texas blue topaz, the official state gem, on private ranches that allow rockhounding. Book a half-day dig at a participating ranch (tools provided, no experience needed) and you can take home eligible finds. Pair it with a sunset drive out James River Road to watch Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from the Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve (typically open mid-May through October, Thursday through Sunday). Cap the day with brisket at Cooper's Original Bar-B-Q in Llano for a Hill Country day no other Texas town can offer.
