Campgrounds and RV parks near San Saba, TX

Colorado Bend State Park is the main outdoor draw. Visitors can hike to the seventy-foot Gorman Falls on a three-mile round-trip trail, cool off at Spicewood Springs, paddle or fish the Colorado River, and join a ranger-led cave tour, booked separately in advance. The park has more than thirty-five miles of trails and hundreds of caves across roughly 5,300 acres of Hill Country wilderness. On Lake Buchanan, Canyon of the Eagles covers roughly 940 acres with about fourteen miles of trails, an on-site observatory for stargazing, and shoreline access for fishing and kayaking. Wildlife includes bald eagles that nest in the area from October through March. Wine tasting rooms, pecan orchards, and small Hill Country towns round out day-trip options from San Saba.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of Texas. March through May brings wildflowers, moderate temperatures, and the year's heaviest rainfall, with May typically the wettest month. Fall cools off steadily from September into November and offers drier, more reliable weather for hiking and paddling. Summer runs hot. June through August routinely pushes past one hundred degrees, humidity is high, and shade at riverside sites is limited. Trails at Colorado Bend are rocky and largely unshaded, so early starts and heavy water rationing are essential. Burn bans are common, so check park status before arrival; Colorado Bend has posted bans that prohibit wood and charcoal fires while allowing containerized fuel stoves. Winter is mild but variable, with January the coolest month. Colorado Bend State Park closes entirely during scheduled public hunts on select dates in October, November, and December, so verify dates before booking. Sections of trail at Canyon of the Eagles close from March through August to protect nesting golden-cheeked warblers and black-capped vireos.

Colorado Bend State Park operates an automated gate open from six in the morning to ten at night. Campers arriving after ten must call park headquarters by four thirty in the afternoon to obtain the gate code. Overnight arrivals after four fifteen use the after-hours check-in procedure posted outside headquarters. The park headquarters sits in the main campground near the end of the six-mile park road. Inside the state park, expect back-to-nature conditions. Drive-up and hike-in sites have water in the area but no hookups and no on-site sewage disposal. Composting toilets and an open-air rinse-off shower are near the main camping area. Cell service is minimal throughout the park. At Canyon of the Eagles and Texas Hills RV Haven, RV sites include electric, water, and sewer connections, with bathhouses available. Cell coverage on Lake Buchanan can be weak, so confirm amenities and connectivity when booking.
