Overview of campgrounds near Sweetwater
Sweetwater sits in Nolan County on the rolling plains of West Texas, roughly 40 miles west of Abilene along Interstate 20. The town is a practical hub for RV travelers crossing the state on I-20, with fuel, groceries, and repair services close to the highway. Lake Sweetwater, just southeast of town, anchors most of the local outdoor recreation.
RV options cluster near the interstate and along the routes into town. Freedom RV Park, Freedom RV Park Florida, and the Freedom RV Park I-20 Location offer full-hookup sites aimed at travelers stopping overnight or staying a few days. Weeping Willow RV Park serves longer stays and working guests with monthly-friendly amenities.
Beyond private parks, Lake Sweetwater Municipal Park provides water and electric sites at the city-owned lake, and Abilene State Park lies about 45 minutes east for travelers who want a fuller state-park experience with hiking and a swimming pool.
Things to do near Sweetwater
Lake Sweetwater is the closest recreation draw, with a boat ramp, fishing for bass and catfish, a swim area, and birdwatching along the shoreline. The lake sits minutes from downtown and is easy to reach from any of the local RV parks.
In town, the National WASP WWII Museum at Avenger Field documents the Women Airforce Service Pilots who trained there during World War II. The Pioneer City County Museum covers regional and frontier history. Sweetwater is best known nationally for the annual Rattlesnake Round-Up, held the second full weekend of March at the Nolan County Coliseum, which fills every campground in the area.
Day trips work well from a Sweetwater base: Abilene State Park for hiking and shaded picnicking, Buffalo Gap Historic Village, and the wind turbine landscapes north and south of town.

57° / 39°F 20 mmMild, dry, and windy; occasional hard freezes
Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of West Texas. Daytime highs sit in comfortable ranges, humidity stays lower than in coastal Texas, and evenings cool off enough for outdoor cooking. May tends to be the wettest month, with thunderstorms and hail possible on the plains, so travelers should watch forecasts closely.
Summer runs hot. Highs regularly reach the mid-90s and can top 100, and shade is limited at most local parks. RVs with strong air conditioning and 50-amp service handle it best. Early mornings and evenings are the practical times for outdoor activity at the lake.
Winter is mild by northern standards but windy, with occasional freezes and rare snow. Most private parks stay open year-round. The second full weekend of March books out well in advance for the Rattlesnake Round-Up, so reserving early is essential for that weekend.
How to book campgrounds near Sweetwater
Private parks in the Sweetwater area, including Freedom RV Park, Freedom RV Park Florida, the Freedom RV Park I-20 Location, and Weeping Willow RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. For overnight stops off I-20, calling ahead the same day is usually enough outside of major events.
Lake Sweetwater Municipal Park handles reservations by phone through the city, with check-in and payment at the Lake Sweetwater Municipal Golf Course pro shop rather than at the campground itself. Abilene State Park and other Texas Parks and Wildlife sites use the state reservation system through Texas State Parks, online or by phone, with a booking window that opens five months ahead of arrival.
Book several months out for the March Rattlesnake Round-Up weekend and for holiday weekends between May and September.
What to expect at Sweetwater campgrounds
Terrain around Sweetwater is flat to gently rolling, with mesquite, low grasses, and open sky. Most private RV parks in town offer level pull-through or back-in sites with 30 and 50-amp service, full hookups, and Wi-Fi of varying reliability. Shade is limited, so awnings and window covers help in summer.
Wind is a constant factor on the rolling plains. The wind turbines visible from I-20 are not decorative, and gusty afternoons are common in spring. Travelers should stow awnings when leaving the site and be prepared for dust.
Cell coverage is generally solid near I-20 and in town on major carriers, though it can drop at the lake. Groceries, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are available in Sweetwater itself, and Abilene, 40 miles east, covers anything more specialized.

weather.gov/sjt/climateI've never rented an RV before. Will I know what to do?
You'll feel ready by the time you pull out of the driveway. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, slide-outs, water tanks, propane, awning, and dump procedure step by step. You can also message your host before booking with any questions, and many provide a printed cheat sheet or short video for the road. Pro tip: do a slow lap around the empty parking lot at the Nolan County Coliseum before merging onto I-20, it's a great low-pressure place to get a feel for the rig.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002232393-For-rentersWhat if something breaks down on my Sweetwater RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing when needed. rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Sweetwater RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Cross-state road trips are very welcome. An RV road trip from Sweetwater can easily loop through New Mexico (Carlsbad Caverns is about 280 miles west) or up to Oklahoma and into the Texas Panhandle, just confirm your route with the host so they know your plans. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan and roadside coverage do not extend across the border. If you're dreaming of Big Bend or the Davis Mountains, you'll still find plenty of stunning landscape on the US side. Message your host before booking with your proposed route, and they can confirm mileage allowances and any state-specific notes.

Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes run 8 to 12 mpg, Class A rigs sit around 7 to 10 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (expect a 20 to 30 percent drop from its normal mpg). Gas in Sweetwater typically runs a bit below the Texas state average thanks to nearby refining capacity, and the Love's Travel Stop and Pilot off I-20 exit 244 are convenient diesel and gas fill-ups with RV-friendly lanes. Top off in Sweetwater before heading toward Big Bend or Palo Duro, stations get sparser once you leave the I-20 corridor.

Booking early pays off, especially for the best campgrounds near Sweetwater. Texas State Parks (including Lake Colorado City and Abilene State Park) open reservations five months ahead through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and waterfront and full-hookup sites for spring and fall weekends regularly book out within days. For private parks like Ridgeview RV Resort or Whistle Stop RV Resort, two to four weeks ahead is usually plenty outside of March. If you're traveling during the Rattlesnake Roundup weekend (always the second full weekend of March), book RV sites four to six months in advance. Pro tip: midweek arrivals almost always have availability and often score a small discount.

Interstate 20 runs right through town with wide lanes, gentle terrain, and plenty of pull-offs, making it ideal for first-time RV drivers. Drive a steady 60 to 65 mph, grip the wheel firmly when passing 18-wheelers, and avoid driving in the highest-wind afternoons if you can. Watch for occasional deer at dawn and dusk on rural FM roads, and you'll find the rest of the drive a wide-open West Texas pleasure.
