Campgrounds and RV parks near Boyce, VA

The Shenandoah River is the main draw. Tubing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and fishing are all available on the river, and outfitters near Watermelon Park and RV Campground and Gooney Creek Campgrounds run shuttles for float trips. Shenandoah River State Park, downstream near Bentonville, offers river access, picnic areas, and trails that draw families, anglers, and paddlers. Hiking is close at hand. Sky Meadows State Park has hike-in campsites reached from the park entrance and connects to the Appalachian Trail near Bears Den. Skyline Drive and the north end of Shenandoah National Park are about a 30-minute drive south. Off the water, Winchester's Old Town, Civil War sites, apple orchards, and area wineries fill rainy-day itineraries.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through mid-October. River tubing at Watermelon Park and RV Campground and paddling out of Gooney Creek Campgrounds concentrate in June, July, and August, when water levels are usually reliable and shuttles run daily. Holiday weekends fill first, and full-hookup pull-throughs at private parks are typically booked several weeks ahead. Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. Wildflowers and dogwood peak in April and May, and October brings foliage that draws day-trippers to Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge. Bookings for fall weekends tighten quickly once leaves start turning. Winter camping is limited but possible. Candy Hill is open year round and accommodates a wide range of vehicles from small campers to the largest RVs. Most Virginia state park campgrounds are open from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December, and many riverfront private parks close or run reduced services from late fall through early spring, so confirm hookups and bathhouse status before arriving.

Sites near Boyce range from full-hookup pull-throughs at parks like Candy Hill Campground to water-and-electric riverfront spots. Watermelon Park offers water and electric hookups but no sewer connections at sites, though a dump station is available, so plan a dump-station stop on the way out. Cell service is generally reliable in the valley but drops in river bottoms and on Skyline Drive. Terrain is rolling. Interior roads at private parks are usually paved or gravel, but riverside sites can be tight, and low-hanging trees are common. The access road at Watermelon Park is noted to be quite narrow, which can present challenges for larger motorhomes, so measure your rig including slide-outs before requesting a specific site. Wildlife includes deer, black bears in the foothills, and snakes near river banks. Store food inside the RV overnight, and expect some road or train noise at riverside locations.
