Campgrounds and RV parks near Brightwood, VA

Shenandoah National Park is the primary draw. The park contains over 500 miles of trails, including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail, and Skyline Drive runs 105 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge with 75 scenic overlooks. Popular hikes near Big Meadows Campground - Shenandoah National Park include Dark Hollow Falls, a short round trip to the closest waterfall from Skyline Drive, plus Hawksbill Mountain and the Rose River Loop. Bearfence Mountain, a short rock scramble with panoramic views, sits near Lewis Mountain Campground - Shenandoah National Park. Wildlife viewing is a routine activity: white-tailed deer graze in the Big Meadows area at dawn and dusk, and black bears are frequently spotted along berry-rich forest edges. Off-park options include Luray Caverns on the west side of the ridge, plus wineries, antique shops, and Civil War battlefield sites in the Piedmont around Culpeper and Madison.

Shenandoah's front-country camping season generally runs from late March or early May through late October or early November, varying by campground. Big Meadows Campground - Shenandoah National Park and Lewis Mountain Campground - Shenandoah National Park typically close by the end of Thanksgiving weekend and reopen in spring. Winter travel on Skyline Drive is possible but subject to closures for snow and ice, sometimes for extended periods. Spring brings wildflower blooms and waterfalls running full from rain and snowmelt. Summer is the busiest general-visitation season, with cooler nights on the ridge thanks to elevation while the Piedmont around Brightwood stays warmer and more humid. Afternoon thunderstorms are common on both sides of the mountains. Fall is peak demand. October weekends draw heavy foliage-season traffic, and reservable Big Meadows sites for fall Saturdays tend to disappear quickly once the six-month rolling window opens. Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends are similarly competitive. Midweek availability, especially Tuesday through Thursday, is dramatically better across all park campgrounds, even in October.

In-park campgrounds are rustic. There are no RV hookups at Big Meadows Campground - Shenandoah National Park or Lewis Mountain Campground - Shenandoah National Park. Big Meadows has a dump station with potable water plus coin-operated showers, and Lewis Mountain campers use the Big Meadows dump station about 7 miles north. Generators are allowed only between 8-10 AM and 4-7 PM, capped at 60 decibels. Cell service is limited across the park; download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival. Black bears are active. All food, coolers, trash, and scented items must be stored in a locked vehicle or provided food locker. Firewood brought from outside the park must be USDA-certified and labeled. Private resorts like Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Luray deliver a different experience with full-hookup RV sites, pools, and organized family activities. Cedar Mountain Campground offers full hookups and a fishing pond in a quieter Piedmont setting.
