Campgrounds near Dumfries, Virginia
Dumfries sits along I-95 in northern Virginia, roughly 35 miles south of Washington, D.C., and directly adjacent to Prince William Forest Park, a National Park Service site that preserves approximately 15,000 acres including a major portion of the Quantico Creek watershed. The park anchors most nearby camping and is a practical base for trips into the capital, Quantico, Manassas, and Fredericksburg.
RV travelers typically choose between two options inside the park itself. Prince William Forest RV Campground is a private concession operated campground in Prince William Forest Park, a unit of the National Park System with paved pull-through sites, full or partial hookups, and a seasonal pool, while Oak Ridge Campground - Prince William Forest Park is a National Park Service facility with wooded, non-hookup sites suited to smaller rigs and tent campers.
Just south in Stafford County, Aquia Pines Campground offers a private, full-service alternative close to the interstate. Across the Potomac in southern Maryland, Smallwood State Park and Goose Bay Marina and Campground add waterfront options on Mattawoman Creek and the Port Tobacco River near the Potomac, respectively, within roughly an hour's drive.
Things to do near Dumfries
Prince William Forest Park is the main draw. Hikers enjoy exploring the park's 37 miles of foot trails, and bicyclists will find on and off road biking on 21 miles of paved roads within the park, including the 12-mile Scenic Drive. Minimal traffic and a 25 mph speed limit make this a popular biking route, and small lakes and creeks support fishing.
Day-trip options are strong. The National Museum of the Marine Corps sits minutes away at Quantico, Manassas National Battlefield is a short drive north, and Fredericksburg's Civil War sites lie just south. Washington, D.C. is reachable by car or by commuter rail from nearby stations.
For water-based trips, Smallwood State Park has a marina and boat launches on Mattawoman Creek, and Goose Bay provides Potomac River access for boating and fishing.

The core RV camping season runs March through November. Oak Ridge Campground is open March through November and accommodates tents, RVs and trailers, with recreational vehicles limited to 32 feet in length and 12 feet in height. Trailers and fifth wheels face a shorter 26-foot limit, so larger rigs should plan on the private options nearby.
Spring brings wildflowers and moderate crowds, though rain is frequent. Summer is the busiest window: hot, humid, and prone to afternoon thunderstorms, with peak family bookings tied to school breaks and holidays. Private parks in the corridor commonly enforce minimum-night stays over Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends, so travelers should confirm policies at booking.
Fall delivers cooler nights and hardwood color through October. Winter camping is limited: Oak Ridge is closed, Smallwood State Park's family loop reduces service, and only a handful of private parks including Prince William Forest RV Campground, which is open year-round, and Aquia Pines Campground operate through the cold months.

How to book
Reservation systems differ by campground. Reservations are required for all campsites at Oak Ridge Campground and can be made up to six months in advance, including the day of arrival, online at Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777. There are no hookups for RVs and maximum RV length is 32 feet, so larger rigs should look elsewhere.
Reservations at Smallwood State Park can be made up to 365 days in advance by calling 1-888-432-CAMP (2267) Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or online 24/7 at parkreservations.maryland.gov. Prince William Forest RV Campground, Aquia Pines Campground, and Goose Bay Marina and Campground book directly through each operator's website or phone line, with peak summer weekends often filling weeks ahead.
What to expect on site
Sites inside Prince William Forest Park are heavily wooded. Prince William Forest RV Campground offers paved pull-through sites that accommodate vehicles up to 35 feet in length, with heated restrooms and complimentary showers, a small playground, laundry services, and a swimming pool for warmer days. Oak Ridge has no hookups and no dump station, so plan to arrive with a full fresh-water tank.
Smallwood State Park's campground features 18 campsites, 16 of which are suitable for both RVs and tents, with 50-amp electric and water hookups, a picnic table, a lantern post, and a fire ring with a grill attachment at each site. visitpwc.com/blog/post/camping-rving-in-prince-william-va/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Dumfries, Virginia?
Good news, a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Dumfries, Virginia. Virginia allows drivers to operate any RV under 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) with a standard Class D license, and virtually every motorhome, campervan, travel trailer, and Class C on RVezy falls well under that limit. RVezy also requires renters to be at least 25 years old, with identity verification handled right through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home country license. No CDL, no endorsement, no test required.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I book an RV in Dumfries?
Every RV rental in Dumfries booked through RVezy comes with a built-in renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-95 toward Quantico or cruise down to Leesylvania State Park with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers accidental damage to the vehicle up to the plan limits, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (Standard, Premium, or Peace of Mind), not the host, so you can match it to your trip and comfort level. It gives you meaningful financial protection without arranging a separate policy. Most first-time renters tell us the included protection is the moment they stopped worrying and started planning.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Dumfries RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not individual hosts, sets the cancellation policy for every reservation. The policy is standardized across the platform and the refund amount depends on how far in advance of your trip start date you cancel, so you can review the exact terms before you commit at checkout. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook. Because Northern Virginia weather can shift quickly in spring and late summer, we recommend booking early and reaching out to RVezy support 24/7 if your plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Dumfries?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Dumfries options are plentiful on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see listings whose owners welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Many local hosts are pet owners themselves and will share their favorite tail-wagging spots, like the leashed trails through Prince William Forest Park and the dog-friendly areas at Pohick Bay Regional Park. Pets are allowed in Leesylvania State Park's day-use areas on a leash, but confirm current rules with the park before you go. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee or size limit, most are flexible if you ask.
nps.gov/prwi/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Dumfries?
Yes, RV delivery Dumfries is one of the most popular add-ons for first-timers. Many hosts will drive the RV to your campsite at Prince William Forest Park, Aquia Pines, or even your driveway, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. This is a game-changer if you're nervous about backing a 30-foot rig into a wooded site off Route 234. Delivery fees are set by each host and typically range from a flat local rate to a per-mile charge for longer distances. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, then message to confirm pricing for your specific campground.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dumfries,%20VirginiaHow far can I drive from Dumfries on a typical RV rental?
You've got incredible range from Dumfries thanks to its I-95 location. Many hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage perfect for longer loops. Easy reach includes Shenandoah National Park (about 90 miles west), Virginia Beach (200 miles southeast), Assateague Island (170 miles east for the wild ponies), Gettysburg PA (110 miles north), and the Outer Banks (260 miles south). A classic Dumfries RV trip is the Skyline Drive loop, three to four days through Front Royal, Big Meadows, and back via Charlottesville. Watch the mileage policy on each listing and ask the host about overage rates upfront.
nps.gov/shen/index.htmWhere can I park my RV near Dumfries?
Dumfries sits in the sweet spot for RV camping, with full-hookup and rustic options minutes away. Top picks include Prince William Forest RV Campground (paved pull-throughs with full hookups, pool, open year-round, just off I-95), Oak Ridge Campground inside Prince William Forest National Park (no hookups, RVs up to 32 feet, seasonal), Aquia Pines Camp Resort in Stafford (about 15 minutes south, full hookups), Pohick Bay Regional Park (about 30 minutes north on the Potomac), and Bull Run Regional Park (about 45 minutes north with 50-amp service). Overnight parking at Walmart or rest stops is generally not permitted in the area, so always book a campsite in advance.
nps.gov/prwi/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhen is the best time of year to take an RV trip from Dumfries?
The sweet spot for an RV road trip from Dumfries is mid-April through late October, with two standout windows: late April to early June (highs in the 70s F, dogwoods blooming, fewer bugs) and mid-September through late October (crisp 55 to 75 F days and peak fall color through Prince William Forest's oak and hickory canopy in mid to late October). July and August are warm and humid (mid-80s to low 90s F with afternoon thunderstorms) but great for Potomac swimming. Winter RVing is doable since Prince William Forest RV Campground stays open year-round, just rent a unit with a heated tank package if temperatures dip below freezing.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay driving one around Dumfries?
You'll do great, first time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially in Dumfries. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving tips, hookups, slide-outs, and the propane system, and they're a text away during your trip. For your first drive, take Route 234 west into Prince William Forest Park (low traffic, 25 mph speed limit on Scenic Drive) before tackling I-95. If the thought of city driving in Northern Virginia stresses you out, just book delivery and skip it entirely. Start with a Class C or campervan under 25 feet, they handle like a big van.
nps.gov/prwi/planyourvisit/driving.htmWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering services like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Just call the number in your booking confirmation and help is dispatched, whether you're on I-95 near Quantico or camped near Skyline Drive. Your host is also typically reachable by phone or message and knows their RV inside and out, often the fastest fix is a quick call to them. Pro tip: do a five-minute walk-around at every fuel stop (tires, slides retracted, hitch if towing) to catch small things before they become trip-stoppers.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Dumfries RV rental into other states or Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is completely fine, and Dumfries is a launchpad for multi-state road trips up and down the Eastern Seaboard. Popular routes include north to Gettysburg and Hershey PA, west into West Virginia and the Blue Ridge, south to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and east to Maryland's Assateague Island. Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance terms, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Always share your itinerary with your host so they can flag any state-specific length or propane rules.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Dumfries RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable on any RV road trip from Dumfries, so budget realistically. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 mpg, Class A coaches 6 to 9 mpg, and campervans 14 to 20 mpg. Virginia gas prices currently average around $3.10 to $3.40 per gallon, with diesel slightly higher. For a 500-mile weekend in a Class C at 10 mpg, expect roughly $160 to $175 in fuel. Pro tip: skip the I-95 service plazas and exit at Stafford (Exit 143) or Fredericksburg (Exit 130) where Wawa, Sheetz, and Costco consistently run 20 to 40 cents cheaper per gallon, an easy $20 savings per fill-up.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Dumfries?
Book early, campgrounds near Dumfries fill up fast because of the DC metro demand. For Oak Ridge Campground in Prince William Forest Park, reservations open six months out on Recreation.gov and summer weekends often sell out within hours. Prince William Forest RV Campground (the private concessionaire with full hookups) takes reservations directly at 703-221-2474 and stays open year-round. Virginia State Parks like Pohick Bay and Westmoreland book through ReserveAmerica or 800-933-7275 up to 11 months ahead. Aim for 60 to 90 days out for spring and fall weekends, 4 to 6 months for July 4 and Labor Day. Midweek? You can often grab a same-week site.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233379What are driving conditions like around Dumfries?
Dumfries sits right on I-95, one of the busiest corridors in the country, so timing matters. Northbound toward DC backs up weekdays 6 to 9 a.m. and southbound 3 to 7 p.m., plus Sunday evenings heading north. Avoid those windows and you'll cruise. The express lanes (E-ZPass required, dynamic tolling) can be a lifesaver when traveling with a larger RV. Watch the 13'6" clearance on older Route 1 underpasses, and stick to I-95 or Route 234 for taller rigs. Winter (December to February) can bring occasional snow or ice, but major roads are well-plowed. Pro tip: leave Dumfries before 6 a.m. or after 10 a.m. on getaway days.
virginiadot.org/travel/citizen-northern.aspWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Dumfries?
Campgrounds near Dumfries run the full spectrum. Prince William Forest RV Campground offers full hookups (water, electric 30/50-amp, sewer), heated bathhouses with hot showers, a dump station, swimming pool, laundry, and a small playground. Oak Ridge inside Prince William Forest Park is rustic with flush toilets, sinks, no hookups, and a separate dump station on the way out, generators allowed in B loop only during quiet hours (10 p.m. to 8 a.m.). Aquia Pines and Pohick Bay both have full hookups, dump stations, and potable water fill. Pro tip: fill fresh water before leaving any campground, Virginia state parks have water spigots at every dump station for free top-offs.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233379What's typically included inside an RV rental in Dumfries?
Most motorhome rental Dumfries listings come fully equipped for a turnkey trip. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunks (sleeps 4 to 8 depending on type), full kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and sink, plus a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower. Roof air conditioning, propane furnace, awning, and outdoor seating are standard. Many hosts include kitchen kits, linens, a generator for boondocking, outdoor grill, and even a Starlink or Wi-Fi hotspot. Class C and Class A motorhomes have seatbelts for travel passengers, travel trailers do not (occupants ride in the tow vehicle). Check the listing's amenities tab to see exactly what's included.
nps.gov/prwi/planyourvisit/rvcampground.htmWhat add-ons and features can I get with my Dumfries RV rental?
RVezy hosts in Dumfries offer some genuinely useful add-ons: portable generators ($25 to $50 per day for boondocking near Shenandoah), bike racks, kayaks and paddleboards (handy for the Potomac and Lake Manassas), camp chairs and tables, propane refills, linen and kitchen packages, and the popular delivery and setup service. Most hosts allow pickup and drop-off at their address in Dumfries, Triangle, or nearby Woodbridge, with windows typically 1 to 4 p.m. for pickup and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for return. Mileage policies vary from 100 free miles per night to truly unlimited, so check that line item carefully. Message the host to confirm anything special.
visitpwc.com/things-to-do/outdoors-recreation/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay for your booking through RVezy at checkout using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) and released after drop-off, assuming the rig comes back in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues on your Dumfries RV trip, do a thorough video walk-through with your host at pickup and again at return, empty the black and gray tanks at a dump station, refill propane and fuel to the agreed level, and give the interior a quick clean.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trips I can take from Dumfries in an RV?
The RV road trip from Dumfries options are stellar. Top picks: Skyline Drive and Shenandoah National Park (90 miles west, 105 miles of ridgeline views, Big Meadows Campground), the Chesapeake Bay loop via Westmoreland State Park and Colonial Beach (60 to 90 miles east, fossil hunting on the Potomac cliffs), Assateague Island National Seashore (170 miles east for the wild ponies and oceanfront sites), Gettysburg and the Pennsylvania Dutch Country (110 miles north), and Colonial Williamsburg plus Virginia Beach (150 to 200 miles southeast). Local insider tip: leave Dumfries by 8 a.m. on Friday to beat the I-95 south crush, you'll be set up at your campsite by lunchtime.
