Campgrounds near Fairfax Station
Fairfax Station sits in southern Fairfax County, Virginia, about 25 miles southwest of Washington, DC, and within an easy drive of the Potomac River, the Northern Virginia Piedmont, and several National Park Service and state park units. The area works well as a base for families combining outdoor time with visits to the capital, Civil War battlefields, and Chesapeake tributaries.
The closest developed camping sits inside Prince William Forest Park, a roughly 15,000-acre National Park Service unit that preserves a large piedmont forest ecosystem along the Quantico Creek watershed. Oak Ridge Campground - Prince William Forest Park handles tents and RVs with no hookups, while the concessionaire-run Prince William Forest RV Campground offers full hookups just outside the park.
Farther out, Greenville Farm Family Campground, Inc. in Haymarket provides a rural working-farm setting west of Manassas, Hillwood Camping Park serves travelers in the outer Northern Virginia belt, and Smallwood State Park across the Potomac in Charles County, Maryland, adds a waterfront option on Mattawoman Creek.
Things to do near Fairfax Station
Prince William Forest Park anchors most itineraries, with roughly 15,000 acres of piedmont forest, hiking and biking trails, creeks, and small lakes shaped by Civilian Conservation Corps work in the 1930s. The park preserves one of the largest protected piedmont forest ecosystems in the mid-Atlantic and is well suited to wildlife viewing, fishing, and quiet day hikes on trails that begin near Oak Ridge Campground - Prince William Forest Park.
Manassas National Battlefield Park is a short drive west and pairs well with a stay at Greenville Farm Family Campground, Inc., which sits near I-66, US 15, and US 29. Smallwood State Park adds boating, kayaking, and fishing on Mattawoman Creek, plus a marina and the restored home of General William Smallwood.
Washington, DC monuments, the Smithsonian museums, and Mount Vernon are all within day-trip range for families using any of the listed campgrounds as a base.

The main camping season in this part of Northern Virginia runs from spring through late fall. Comfort stations in the A and C loops close in early November for winterizing, while the Loop B comfort station stays open until camp closure around the first of December.
Spring brings mild temperatures, blooming hardwoods, and steady rainfall, with occasional thunderstorms. Summer is warm and humid, and afternoon thunderstorms are common; this is peak family-vacation season, so weekend sites at Prince William Forest Park and Smallwood State Park fill early. September and October offer the most reliable weather for RV travel, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and vivid fall color across the Piedmont canopy.
Winter camping is limited. Greenville Farm Family Campground, Inc. operates seasonally, and most state and national park loops in the area shut down or reduce services from December through February.

Great adventure for a novice. A little mixup on purpose of trip my not understanding that we were “boondogging” and not informing Owner so plumbing changes could be made to water supply so water would be available on our trip to Yale University and onward to Niagara Falls ON. Overall RV performed as expected. My two granddaughters my goddaughter the cat and the dog enjoyed our 1st RV venture. Looking forward to our next adventure and college evaluation searches. Owner was very responsive and helpful along the way. I’d like to say thanks for our first RV lesson.

Exceptionally responsive to questions before, during, and after the trip.

How to book campgrounds near Fairfax Station
National Park Service sites at Prince William Forest Park, including Oak Ridge Campground, are booked through Recreation.gov. The standard Recreation.gov booking window opens six months before the arrival date, and peak weekends should be reserved as early as possible. Campers may stay a maximum of 14 nights per calendar year, with waivers available through the park.
Prince William Forest RV Campground is run by a park concessionaire and is booked directly with the operator rather than through Recreation.gov. Smallwood State Park in Maryland is reserved by phone at 1-888-432-CAMP or online at parkreservations.maryland.gov. Greenville Farm Family Campground, Inc. and Hillwood Camping Park are private parks; call ahead to confirm site type, hookups, and rig-length limits before arriving.
What to expect
Sites inside Prince William Forest Park are wooded and quiet. Oak Ridge has picnic tables, grills, lantern posts, and flush toilets in each loop, with showers in Loop B, but no hookups; full hookups are only found at the concessionaire-run Prince William Forest RV Campground. Quiet hours run from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am, and generator use is restricted, with no generator use permitted in Loop C.
Rig-size limits matter here. Oak Ridge caps motorhomes at 32 feet and trailers or fifth wheels at 26 feet, and heights at 12 feet. Smallwood State Park generally handles rigs up to about 30 feet, and family sites there include water and electric hookups.
Cell service can be spotty in wooded park loops, and campers should follow park firewood rules, which require USDA-certified bug-free wood or wood collected within 50 miles of Prince William Forest Park.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Fairfax Station, VA
How much does an RV rental in Fairfax Station cost?
An RV rental in Fairfax Station is reasonably priced for the DC metro area. Travel trailers typically run about $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A coaches usually start around $250 nightly. Booking on weekdays or in the shoulder months of March, April, October and early November can save you 20 to 30 percent compared to peak summer weekends. For the cheapest RV rental Fairfax Station has to offer, filter by travel trailer and look for hosts in nearby Burke, Lorton or Springfield. Pro tip: book at least six weeks ahead of cherry blossom season and the Fourth of July, both of which spike demand across Northern Virginia.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fairfax%20Station%2C%20VirginiaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Fairfax Station, VA?
Great news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Fairfax Station, VA. Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, even larger Class A motorhomes. Through RVezy, approved drivers are generally required to be at least 25 years old and must complete a quick ID verification at booking. Visiting from outside the US? Pair your home country license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club and you are set. Most renters say the hardest part of an RV road trip from Fairfax Station is choosing where to go first.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs protection included with every RV rental in Virginia booking?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Fairfax Station includes a protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, so you can head to Skyline Drive or navigate the Capital Beltway with peace of mind. During checkout you select your level of coverage (RVezy offers tiered plans, not the host), letting you match protection to your comfort level and budget. While not traditional auto insurance, it provides substantial financial protection that most first-time renters find genuinely reassuring. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers a day before booking so you can pick confidently without rushing at checkout.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Fairfax Station RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy on every reservation (not the host), and it includes a grace-period window where you can cancel for a full refund right after booking. After that, your refund depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. Because the policy is consistent across the platform, you do not have to compare fine print between listings in Fairfax Station, Burke or Lorton. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credits. Pro tip: lock in your dates early to secure the best rigs for Shenandoah season, knowing you have flexibility right after booking if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Fairfax Station?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Fairfax Station options are plentiful, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see many dog-welcoming rigs across Fairfax County. Once you arrive, your pup will love Burke Lake Park's lake loop trail just minutes away, and leashed dogs are welcome at Lake Fairfax Park and Bull Run Regional Park. Pohick Bay Regional Park in Lorton also allows pets at RV sites and on nearby Mason Neck trails. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed so check-in is seamless, and pack a collapsible water bowl for the humid Virginia summers when trail temps can climb past 85F.
novaparks.com/parks/bull-run-regional-parkCan the RV be delivered to me in Fairfax Station?
Yes, RV delivery in Fairfax Station is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters wary of Beltway traffic. Many hosts will drive the RV straight to your home, a nearby campground like Lake Fairfax in Reston or Bull Run in Centreville, or Pohick Bay Regional Park in Lorton, then set up the hookups and walk you through every system. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $5 per mile, and some hosts offer free delivery within a set radius. Use the Delivery filter when you search to see qualifying listings instantly. Pro tip: bundling delivery with full setup means your motorhome rental Fairfax Station is camp-ready the moment you arrive.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fairfax%20Station%2C%20VirginiaHow far can I drive on a Fairfax Station RV trip?
You have plenty of range from Fairfax Station, and many hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for road trippers. Most listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles typically running $0.30 to $0.50 each. From Fairfax Station, Shenandoah National Park is about 75 miles west, Assateague Island is around 165 miles east, Virginia Beach sits roughly 200 miles southeast, and Harpers Ferry is about 60 miles north. Even a long weekend loop through the Blue Ridge usually fits within the standard mileage allowance. Pro tip: filter for unlimited-mileage listings if you're planning an RV road trip from Fairfax Station that loops through multiple states.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fairfax%20Station%2C%20VirginiaWhere are the best campgrounds near Fairfax Station for RV camping?
You have excellent options for RV camping near Fairfax Station within a short drive. Burke Lake Park is the closest, about 6 miles away, with wooded sites and a scenic lake loop trail. Lake Fairfax Campground in Reston offers RV sites with electric hookups, a dump station, and access to the Water Mine waterpark. Pohick Bay Regional Park in Lorton has full-hookup sites overlooking the bay, about 15 miles south. Bull Run Regional Park in Centreville provides year-round full-hookup pull-throughs that work well for bigger rigs. Pro tip: Lake Fairfax operates seasonally (roughly spring through fall), so for winter trips aim for Bull Run or Pohick Bay, both open year-round.
novaparks.com/parks/bull-run-regional-park/things-to-do/campingWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Fairfax Station?
Northern Virginia has true four-season camping, but the sweet spot is April through early June and September through October, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 78F range. July and August are popular but humid, with highs around 87F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so make sure your rig has strong air conditioning. Fall foliage along Skyline Drive peaks mid-to-late October and is hands-down the most photogenic time for a Fairfax Station RV trip. Winter rentals (December through February) are quieter and cheaper, with daytime highs around 45F. Pro tip: book April weekends early; they fill fast because of DC's cherry blossom crowds spilling into the suburbs.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, first time renting an RV is exactly what the RVezy experience is designed for. Every host provides a full walkthrough at pickup (or at delivery), covering the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, dump procedure, and driving tips. You can message your host with questions before booking, during your trip, or anytime through the app. For your first Fairfax Station outing, consider a travel trailer or Class C between 22 and 28 feet, easier to park at Burke Lake or Lake Fairfax than a 35-foot Class A. RVezy's customer support is also a tap away. Pro tip: do a short shakedown night close to home before tackling Skyline Drive's winding curves.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002053314-GuestsWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on I-95, a dead battery at Pohick Bay, or a tow situation on Route 50 is one phone call away. You can also message your host directly through the app for quick guidance on quirks specific to their rig, like which breaker controls the microwave. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip for anything that falls outside roadside help. Pro tip: snap photos of the breaker panel and water valves during your walkthrough so you have an easy reference if you need to troubleshoot anything later.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my RV across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is standard for an RV rental in Fairfax Station, VA. Most hosts welcome trips throughout the Mid-Atlantic, so you can easily reach Maryland's Assateague Island, West Virginia's Harpers Ferry, Pennsylvania's Gettysburg, or North Carolina's Outer Banks without extra paperwork. Cross-border travel into Canada depends on the specific host and protection coverage, so message the listing owner before booking if you're dreaming of Niagara or Quebec. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: popular multi-state loops from Fairfax Station include the Blue Ridge Parkway south or the Lake Erie coast north through Pennsylvania.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to estimate. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches 6 to 9 MPG. A weekend run from Fairfax Station to Shenandoah and back (about 160 miles) in a Class C costs roughly $50 to $65 in gas at typical Virginia pump prices. For a week-long Outer Banks loop of around 500 miles, budget $150 to $250. Pro tip: Costco in Fairfax and Sam's Club in Springfield consistently have competitive fuel prices in the area and accommodate most Class B and C rigs, though large Class A drivers should fuel up at travel plazas off I-95.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds?
Plan ahead and you'll have your pick of the best campgrounds near Fairfax Station. Fairfax County Park Authority sites like Burke Lake open reservations months ahead, and summer weekends typically fill 8 to 12 weeks out. NOVA Parks campgrounds (Bull Run, Pohick Bay, and Lake Fairfax) book through novaparks.com on a similar timeline. Shenandoah National Park's Big Meadows and Mathews Arm campgrounds release sites six months in advance on recreation.gov, and fall foliage weekends sell out quickly. Pro tip: for spontaneous trips, weekday nights at Bull Run almost always have availability, and the year-round full hookups make it a reliable backup for any Fairfax Station RV trip.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232492What are local driving conditions like around Fairfax Station?
Driving an RV around Fairfax Station is very manageable as long as you avoid rush hour. The Capital Beltway (I-495) and I-66 see heavy congestion weekdays from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m., so plan your departure midmorning or after dinner. Most local roads are wide and RV-friendly, but watch for restrictions on the George Washington Parkway (no commercial vehicles) and the Rock Creek Parkway in DC. Heading west, I-66 to Front Royal is a smooth, easy drive. Pro tip: skip downtown DC entirely with your motorhome rental Fairfax Station and use the Vienna or Franconia-Springfield Metro stations to visit the monuments instead.
virginiadot.org/travel/traffic.aspWhat amenities do local campgrounds offer for RVs?
Northern Virginia campgrounds are well-equipped for RV camping near Fairfax Station. Pohick Bay and Bull Run both offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), bathhouses with hot showers, and on-site dump stations. Lake Fairfax provides electric hookups at sites plus a central dump station and fresh water fill, with a camp store. Burke Lake Park is more rustic, with no RV hookups, but it has restrooms, drinking water, and a dump station. Most parks include fire rings and picnic tables at each site. Pro tip: if you need a quick dump-and-fill between trips, Bull Run Regional Park's dump station is one of the most accessible in the region.
novaparks.com/parks/bull-run-regional-park/things-to-do/campingWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Fairfax Station?
You'll be impressed by how turnkey most rentals are. A typical RV rental in Fairfax Station includes sleeping for 2 to 8 people, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with AC and furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many rigs add a TV, generator or solar, outdoor speakers, and even Wi-Fi hotspots, ideal for working remotely from the Shenandoah foothills. Campervan rental Fairfax Station options are more compact but still include kitchenettes and convertible beds. Each listing page lists exactly what's included. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and check the photos for the bathroom layout, that's the detail first-time renters most often overlook.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fairfax%20Station%2C%20VirginiaWhat add-ons and options can I get with my rental?
Hosts in Fairfax Station offer plenty of helpful add-ons to customize your trip. Common options include delivery and setup, generator hours, propane refill, camping chairs and tables, linens and bedding kits, kitchen packages, bike racks, fire pits, and kid gear like portable cribs. Add-on fees are listed transparently on each listing and typically range from free to about $50 per item. Mileage policies vary too, with many hosts offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and some providing unlimited mileage packages for road trips. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Fairfax County, but delivery is widely available. Pro tip: bundle linens and a kitchen kit on your first trip so you can show up with just clothes and groceries.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Fairfax%20Station%2C%20VirginiaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure, you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. Your trip total (nightly rate, fees, taxes, protection, and any add-ons) is shown clearly before you confirm. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup and released after the trip as long as the RV is returned in the same condition. Deposits typically range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig. Pro tip: do a thorough video walkaround at both pickup and dropoff with your host, that 60 seconds of footage prevents most deposit disputes and keeps your rent an RV in Fairfax Station experience hassle-free.
