Franklin Farm sits in western Fairfax County, Virginia, roughly a half hour west of Washington, D.C. The closest private options are Greenville Farm Family Campground, Inc. in Haymarket and Hillwood Camping Park in Gainesville, both a short hop west via I-66. Greenville Farm is a working farm with mixed-hookup sites, while Hillwood is a full-hookup park geared toward extended stays for travelers working near D.C. The park's Oak Ridge Campground handles tents and smaller RVs with no hookups, and the concessionaire-run Prince William Forest RV Campground offers paved pull-throughs with full hookups. Smallwood State Park, on Mattawoman Creek in southern Maryland, rounds out the region with waterfront electric and water sites and cabins.

Public campgrounds in the area use different reservation systems. Oak Ridge Campground in Prince William Forest Park is booked through Recreation.gov, with a six-month rolling window and a 21-night annual limit per camper. The Prince William Forest RV Campground is operated by a park concessionaire and is booked directly with the concessionaire by phone or through its website rather than through Recreation.gov. Smallwood State Park is reserved through the Maryland State Parks system at parkreservations.maryland.gov or by phone, up to 365 days in advance. Private parks including Greenville Farm Family Campground, Inc. and Hillwood Camping Park take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. For summer weekends and holidays, book several weeks to a few months out, especially for full-hookup sites.
