Campgrounds near Harriston, Virginia
Harriston is a small unincorporated community in Augusta County, Virginia, sitting in the southern Shenandoah Valley. The village lies along US-340 between Waynesboro and Grottoes, with the Blue Ridge Mountains rising to the east and the ridges of the George Washington National Forest to the west. For RV travelers, the location works well as a base for exploring Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, and the farms and small towns of the central valley.
Campground options within a short drive include Waynesboro North 340 Campground, Shenandoah Valley Campground, Sun Retreats Shenandoah Valley, and Misty Mountain Camp Resort, all private RV parks with hookup sites and family amenities. Loft Mountain Campground, run by the National Park Service inside Shenandoah National Park, sits atop Big Flat Mountain off Skyline Drive and offers a more rustic, in-park experience without hookups.
Many trips through the area combine one or two nights at a private park with hookups and a night or two inside the national park for hiking access.
Things to do near Harriston
Shenandoah National Park has over 500 miles of trails, including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail, with some routes leading to waterfalls or lookouts and others winding deep into forest and wilderness. From Loft Mountain Campground, the Frazier Discovery Trail and the Doyles River Trail offer short hikes to viewpoints and waterfalls. Skyline Drive runs 105 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains with 75 scenic overlooks.
Off the mountain, day trips reach Waynesboro's downtown, Staunton's historic district, and Grand Caverns near Grottoes. The South River offers trout fishing and paddling, and the surrounding region is known for cideries, farm stands, and orchards.
Families traveling with kids often mix a park day on Skyline Drive with a pool afternoon back at a private RV resort.

Peak season in the Harriston area runs from late spring through fall. Wildflowers and greening ridges draw visitors in May, and July and August bring the busiest family camping weeks, with warm valley temperatures and afternoon thunderstorms common. October is the marquee month for leaf-peeping along Skyline Drive, and weekend sites in the national park and nearby private campgrounds fill weeks in advance.
Winter is quiet. Loft Mountain Campground typically operates from late spring through October and is closed the rest of the year, while most other park facilities in Shenandoah operate from spring through late fall. Skyline Drive itself remains open year-round, but portions of the 105-mile route are periodically closed during inclement weather.
Shoulder travel in March and November can be rewarding for RVers who want cool nights and quiet campgrounds, but hookup availability at some private parks may be limited, and mountain roads can close on short notice after snow or ice.
How to book campgrounds near Harriston
Reservations for Loft Mountain Campground in Shenandoah National Park are handled through recreation.gov or by phone at 877-444-6777. At Loft Mountain, 152 sites are reservable and 55 sites are first-come, first-served, and reservations may be made up to six months in advance of a stay.
Private parks in the area, including Waynesboro North 340 Campground, Shenandoah Valley Campground, Misty Mountain Camp Resort, and Sun Retreats Shenandoah Valley, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For fall foliage weekends and major holidays, book several months out; midweek summer stays are usually easier to secure closer in.
Check each park's rig-length limits, hookup type, and pet policies before booking, as they vary by site and loop.
What to expect on arrival
Private RV parks near Harriston generally offer level pull-through and back-in sites with water, electric, and sewer hookups, plus bathhouses, laundry, and Wi-Fi of varying reliability. Cell coverage is solid in the valley but drops quickly once you climb Skyline Drive.
Loft Mountain Campground offers 207 campsites with flush toilets, water spigots, and a dump station, with pay showers nearby at the camp store. There are no individual hookups at Loft Mountain, so plan for generator hours and battery use. Black bears, wild turkeys, deer, and other wildlife are common across the park, so store food in vehicles or provided bear boxes.
Expect cool nights at elevation even in summer, mosquitoes near water in July and August, and occasional afternoon thunderstorms that clear quickly.

Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff, it is the single best way to ensure a smooth deposit refund.

Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: a popular 7-day route from Harriston runs north through Harpers Ferry, into Pennsylvania Dutch Country, and back via the Skyline Drive, all on RV-friendly highways.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityAre RV rentals available in Harriston during winter?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Harriston are absolutely available, and the off-season is one of the best-kept secrets in the Shenandoah Valley. Many hosts offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces rated for the 20 to 40 degree nights typical from December through February. Skyline Drive can close temporarily during ice or snow events, but Route 340, Interstate 81, and most valley campgrounds stay open year-round. Walnut Hills Campground in Staunton offers winter sites with full hookups. Pro tip: ask hosts about shore power requirements and propane fill levels at pickup, and plan to camp at sites with electric so the furnace doesn't drain the battery overnight.
