Camping near Lake Barcroft, Virginia
Lake Barcroft sits inside the Capital Beltway in Fairfax County, roughly ten miles from the National Mall. The lake itself is a private, gated community reservoir, so RV travelers use it as a location reference rather than a shoreline destination. Campgrounds in the surrounding corridor put visitors within easy reach of Washington, D.C., Arlington, and Alexandria while still parking on wooded sites away from the city core.
Options range from full-hookup commercial parks to primitive National Park Service loops. Cherry Hill Park, a commercial campground in College Park, Maryland, sits a short drive from Washington, D.C. and offers shuttle service to Metro along with organized sightseeing tours. Greenbelt Park Campground is an urban oasis about 10 miles from Washington, D.C., and is known for its wooded setting and National Park Service management.
Farther south along Interstate 95, Oak Ridge Campground is a 100-site, wooded campground located in Prince William Forest Park, 35 miles southwest of Washington, DC. Prince William Forest RV Campground, also within the park area, is the closest option with utility hookups. Smallwood State Park lies across the Potomac in southern Maryland on Mattawoman Creek.
Things to do near Lake Barcroft
The main draw is proximity to Washington, D.C. Museums on the National Mall, the monuments, and the Tidal Basin are all reachable by Metro or by tour bus from area campgrounds. The Washington, D.C. Metro Transit System at Greenbelt Station is just 1.5 miles from the park, which makes car-free days into the city practical from Greenbelt Park Campground and nearby Cherry Hill Park.
Outdoor activity picks up outside the Beltway. Prince William Forest Park preserves approximately 15,000 acres including a major portion of the Quantico Creek watershed, and is the largest example of a piedmont forest ecosystem in the region. Trails, creek fishing, and quiet paddling are the standard uses. At Smallwood State Park, Sweden Point Marina has 50 boat slips and excellent access for fishing on the Potomac River, and Smallwood's Retreat, the restored home of General William Smallwood, is open to visitors.

December - February
46° / 31°F 76 mmCold; Greenbelt stays open, most state parks reduce services
The region is a four-season destination, but campground calendars are not uniform. National Park Service sites follow strict operating windows. Oak Ridge Campground is open March through November and accommodates tents, RVs and trailers, with reservations required and no hookups. Greenbelt Park Campground offers year-round reservations that may be booked six months in advance, which makes it one of the few options for winter trips close to D.C.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for touring the city on foot. Summer brings heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms; it is also peak tourism season, so booking early matters. Mountain Laurel blooms throughout Greenbelt Park in May, and fall foliage in Prince William Forest Park typically peaks in mid to late October.
Winter camping is quiet but limited. Commercial parks such as Cherry Hill Park operate year-round with full utilities. Ticks are a concern in the Mid-Atlantic region in spring and summer, so campers should take precautions.

Great adventure for a novice. A little mixup on purpose of trip my not understanding that we were “boondogging” and not informing Owner so plumbing changes could be made to water supply so water would be available on our trip to Yale University and onward to Niagara Falls ON. Overall RV performed as expected. My two granddaughters my goddaughter the cat and the dog enjoyed our 1st RV venture. Looking forward to our next adventure and college evaluation searches. Owner was very responsive and helpful along the way. I’d like to say thanks for our first RV lesson.

Great Class B experience. This was our first Class B with a wet bath. It was nicely outfitted with cookware, towels, linens, pillows, and outdoor chairs, table, and large mat. The screen in the side door allowed us to open the sliding door while keeping the bugs out. Bob was supper responsive with great communications before and during the rental. We had a couple minor issues that he helped us work out quickly.

How to book a campground near Lake Barcroft
Reservation systems differ by operator. Greenbelt Park offers year-round reservations that may be booked six months in advance through the Recreation.gov website or call center (1-877-444-6777); payment is not accepted on site. Oak Ridge Campground in Prince William Forest Park also books through Recreation.gov on a six-month rolling window, with reservable loops and, in some seasons, a walk-in loop for first-come sites.
Reservations at Smallwood State Park can be made up to 365 days in advance by calling 1-888-432-CAMP (2267) or online at parkreservations.maryland.gov. Popular summer weekends fill quickly, so booking well in advance is advisable.
Cherry Hill Park and Prince William Forest RV Campground are private operations booked directly through their websites or by phone. For any peak weekend near cherry blossom season, Independence Day, or fall foliage, lock in dates as early as the booking window allows.
What to expect at campgrounds near Lake Barcroft
Sites near D.C. trade wilderness for access. Cherry Hill Park is a large, amenity-heavy commercial resort with paved sites, pools, a café, and a shuttle to Metro; it sits near the Beltway, so traffic noise is audible on some sites.
National Park Service campgrounds are more rustic. Greenbelt Park Campground has no water or electrical hookups at the sites, though there is a dump station and potable water available, and RV limit is 30 feet in B Loop and 35 feet in D Loop. At Oak Ridge, recreational vehicles may not exceed 32 feet in length and 12 feet in height, and trailers and fifth wheels are limited to 26 feet.
Smallwood State Park sites include 50-amp electric and water hookups, a picnic table, a lantern post, and a fire ring with a grill, and a dump station is available. Expect deer, tick pressure in warm months, and cell service that varies once inside forested park boundaries.

Every RV rental in Lake Barcroft, VA booked on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-495 or head out to Skyline Drive with real peace of mind. rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Lake Barcroft RV trip?
Booking with confidence is the whole point: RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy for every reservation (hosts don't set this themselves), and there is a grace period after booking where you may qualify for a full refund if plans change. Cancellation terms depend on how far out your trip is, and the exact policy applied to your booking is shown at checkout. In the DC area, summer thunderstorms and the occasional tropical system can shift plans, so if severe weather is moving up the Potomac, contact RVezy support right away and they can help you adjust or re-book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Lake Barcroft?
Yes, dogs are welcome on plenty of pet-friendly RV rentals in Lake Barcroft. Just filter for 'Pet-Friendly' on RVezy to see hosts who allow dogs (and sometimes cats). Once you're rolling, Northern Virginia is a dog lover's dream: Lake Accotink Park in nearby Springfield has shaded trails, Burke Lake Park has a leashed loop around the lake, and Virginia State Park campgrounds welcome leashed pets. Pack a leash, vaccination records, and a collapsible bowl. Message the host before booking if you have a large breed, as many are flexible and just want a heads-up.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/petsCan the RV be delivered to me in Lake Barcroft?
Yes, RV delivery in Lake Barcroft is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're new to driving a motorhome through Seven Corners or onto I-395. Many hosts will deliver and set up the RV directly at your campground (Pohick Bay, Burke Lake, or Bull Run Regional Park) or to your driveway in the 22041 ZIP. They'll level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. Use the 'Delivery' filter on RVezy and enter your destination address to see fees up front. It's the stress-free way to enjoy your first motorhome rental Lake Barcroft adventure.

Each listing shows its daily mileage allowance and overage rate up front, so there are no surprises. If you're planning a big road trip from Lake Barcroft, sort listings by unlimited miles and message the host to confirm your route.

Close favorites include Pohick Bay Regional Park in Lorton (about 20 miles south, electric and water sites on the Potomac), Burke Lake Park Campground (about 15 miles, wooded sites and a great fishing lake), Bull Run Regional Park in Centreville (about 25 miles), Lake Fairfax Park in Reston (seasonal), and Prince William Forest Park (about 35 miles, NPS sites with serious tree cover). For a Shenandoah escape, Big Meadows Campground inside the national park is about 90 miles west. NOVA Parks reservations open well in advance and book fast for summer weekends, so plan early.
novaparks.com/parksWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Lake Barcroft?
Lake Barcroft has a true four-season climate, and the sweet spots for RV camping are mid-April through early June and September through late October, when daytime highs typically run 65 to 80 F and humidity drops. July and August are warm and humid (highs in the upper 80s to low 90s with afternoon thunderstorms), so plan for shaded sites and full hookups so you can run AC. Winter (December to February) sees lows around 25 to 40 F with occasional snow, but many hosts list year-round and Pohick Bay stays open. Book the first two weekends of October for peak Shenandoah foliage just 90 minutes away.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay around Lake Barcroft?
You've got this, and you're not alone. First-time renting an RV near Lake Barcroft is easier than you'd expect because every host does a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, the propane system, water, and dumping. If DC-area traffic on I-495 or Route 7 has you nervous, choose a smaller Class B campervan rental in Lake Barcroft or book delivery so the RV is set up and waiting at your campground. Avoid weekday rush hour (6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.), and steer clear of low-clearance and no-RV parkways like Rock Creek Parkway and the GW Parkway. Practice in a quiet lot like Lake Accotink before hitting the highway.
virginiadot.org/travel/citizen-traveler.aspWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Lake Barcroft RV trip?
Help is one call away, 24/7, on every RVezy booking, whether you're parked at Lake Fairfax or pulled over on I-66 heading toward Front Royal. Roadside assistance is included with your RVezy protection plan and covers things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also a great first contact for RV-specific quirks like the generator or slide-outs. Save both numbers in your phone before you leave Lake Barcroft so you're ready to keep enjoying your motorhome rental without missing a beat.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lake Barcroft RV rental to other states or into Canada?
Interstate trips are encouraged: from Lake Barcroft you can easily reach Maryland (Assateague, Ocean City), West Virginia (Harpers Ferry, Seneca Rocks), Pennsylvania (Gettysburg, about 90 miles), North Carolina (Outer Banks, about 280 miles), and Washington, DC itself. Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the protection plan, so message the owner directly from the listing before you book to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. A classic RV road trip from Lake Barcroft is the Skyline Drive to Blue Ridge Parkway loop, an unforgettable 5 to 7 day fall adventure.
nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/skyline-drive.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas costs should I budget for?
Budgeting fuel for your Lake Barcroft RV rental is straightforward. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but reduce your tow vehicle's MPG to roughly 10 to 14. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches run 6 to 10 MPG. Virginia gas prices are typically a bit cheaper than DC or Maryland, so it's often worth filling up before crossing the Wilson Bridge. For a 500-mile loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $150 to $200 in fuel depending on current prices. Check live regional prices on the EIA before your trip to refine your budget.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Lake Barcroft?
For the best campgrounds near Lake Barcroft, book as soon as your dates are locked, ideally 3 to 6 months out for summer weekends. Virginia State Parks (like Mason Neck, about 25 miles away) release reservations on a rolling basis through their reservation system, and Pohick Bay and Burke Lake fill up by Memorial Day. National Park Service sites at Shenandoah and Prince William Forest open 6 months in advance on Recreation.gov, and the moment those release at 10 a.m. ET is prime time. Midweek arrivals (Sunday to Wednesday) often have availability even in July, and many local hosts will deliver the RV to whatever site you score.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Lake Barcroft?
Lake Barcroft sits inside the Capital Beltway (I-495), so the biggest driving consideration is timing: rush-hour traffic on I-66, I-395, and Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) can crawl from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. on weekdays. Aim for a mid-morning or post-7 p.m. departure when possible. The terrain is rolling and easy, but be aware that the George Washington Parkway, Rock Creek Parkway, and Baltimore-Washington Parkway have restrictions and low clearances that make them off-limits or impractical for RVs. Summer pop-up thunderstorms can be intense, and winter brings occasional black ice. Use the Fairfax County Parkway as a calmer alternative to the Beltway when heading south to Pohick Bay.
virginiadot.org/travel/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Lake Barcroft?
Campgrounds near Lake Barcroft range from full-hookup convenience to back-to-basics, and most have what you need for a smooth stay. Pohick Bay offers 30/50-amp electric, water, a dump station, and hot showers. Burke Lake has electric and water sites plus a bathhouse. NOVA Parks generally maintain clean restrooms, potable water fill stations, and dump stations on site. If you're staying somewhere more primitive like parts of Prince William Forest, top off your fresh water at the campground entrance and dump on your way out, it saves a hunt later.
novaparks.com/parksWhat features and amenities come inside a typical Lake Barcroft RV rental?
Most RV rentals in Lake Barcroft come fully equipped so you can pull up and start enjoying the trip. Expect real beds (often a queen in the master, plus bunks or convertible dinettes for the kids), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, AC and furnace, a dinette, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, generator or solar, an outdoor awning, and some offer WiFi hotspots or Starlink as add-ons. Family RV trip planners near Lake Barcroft often choose Class C motorhomes that sleep 6 to 8. Check each listing's photos for the exact bed configuration so everyone has a sleeping spot lined up.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Barcroft%2C%20VirginiaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Lake Barcroft?
Hosts in the Lake Barcroft area commonly offer add-ons that make life easier: delivery and setup (often priced per mile from the host's home base), generator use, bedding and linen packs, camp chairs, bike racks, grills, and even kayaks. Pickup is usually at the host's driveway in Falls Church, Annandale, or Alexandria, and check-in walkthroughs typically run 15 to 30 minutes. Mileage policies vary, with many hosts offering 100 to 150 free miles per day or unlimited mileage. Bundle delivery plus a linen pack and you can show up to the campground with just a duffel bag.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Barcroft%2C%20VirginiaHow does payment and the security deposit work on my Lake Barcroft RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card at booking, with no cash or checks changing hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (the amount is set on each listing) and is released after a smooth return. To avoid any deposit issues on your RV rental in Lake Barcroft, take time-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the same fuel and propane level, and dump the tanks if your host requires it. A short walkthrough video on your phone is great protection for both you and the host.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV in Lake Barcroft overnight if I'm not at a campground?
Lake Barcroft is a residential Fairfax County community, so overnight RV parking on neighborhood streets is restricted, and Virginia interstate rest areas do not allow overnight camping per VDOT rules. The good news: you have great alternatives within 30 minutes. Pohick Bay Regional Park, Burke Lake Park, and Bull Run Regional Park all welcome overnight RVs with hookups. Some Walmart and Cracker Barrel locations along I-95 (such as Woodbridge) may permit a one-night stay, but always call ahead to confirm. If you're picking up your RV and want to overnight before heading out, book a single night at Pohick Bay about 20 miles south, it's the easiest launch pad for your Lake Barcroft RV trip.
