Campgrounds near Leesylvania, Virginia
Leesylvania sits on a peninsula in Prince William County on the tidal Potomac River, about 25 miles south of Washington, D.C. and roughly the same distance north of Fredericksburg. The area is best known for Leesylvania State Park, a 544-acre peninsula bordered by the Potomac River, Neabsco Creek, and Powell's Creek. The park itself is largely day-use, with only a tents-only primitive group campground and four paddle-in tent sites, so most RV travelers base at nearby parks and drive in for the beach, boat ramp, and trails.
The closest full-service RV option is Prince William Forest RV Campground, a private concessionaire park inside Prince William Forest Park with hookups, showers, laundry, and a pool. Oak Ridge Campground, also inside Prince William Forest Park, adds a wooded national-park experience with tent and non-hookup RV sites. Aquia Pines Campground, south along I-95 in Stafford, is another convenient private option.
Across the Potomac in Charles County, Maryland, Smallwood State Park and Goose Bay Marina and Campground put boaters and anglers on Mattawoman Creek within easy reach of the same stretch of river.
Things to do near Leesylvania
Leesylvania State Park is built around water. Families use the swimming beach, the large boat ramp with docks, and the universally accessible fishing pier, and the park store stocks gas, ice, bait, and snacks. Roughly six miles of hiking and history trails loop the peninsula past Civil War gun-battery sites and the Lee family homestead, birthplace of Henry Lee III. Sailboat rentals through the Northern Virginia Sailing School and ranger-led programs, including Junior Ranger summer camps, run out of the visitor center.
Inland, Prince William Forest Park protects roughly 15,000 acres of piedmont forest with 37 miles of foot trails and a 12-mile Scenic Drive open to bikes. Across the river, Smallwood State Park offers a marina, boat launch, fishing pier, and short nature trails on Mattawoman Creek.

How to book near Leesylvania
Prince William Forest Park sites, including Oak Ridge Campground, are reserved through Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777, on the standard National Park Service six-month rolling window. Loops B and C at Oak Ridge take reservations, while Loop A is walk-in. Prince William Forest RV Campground is a private concessionaire and books directly through its own operator.
Leesylvania State Park's group primitive and paddle-in tent sites are handled through the Virginia State Parks reservation system or the park office, with a maximum booking window of 11 months and a minimum of one day ahead of arrival. Smallwood State Park in Maryland takes reservations up to 365 days out, by phone at 1-888-432-CAMP or online through parkreservations.maryland.gov, and same-day bookings are possible during office hours. Aquia Pines Campground and Goose Bay Marina and Campground book directly with each property.
What to expect near Leesylvania
Sites in this area lean wooded and shaded, which helps with summer heat but can complicate satellite reception and large-slide setups. Check length limits carefully: Oak Ridge caps RVs at 32 feet, trailers and fifth wheels at 26 feet, and 12 feet in height, and Smallwood accommodates RVs up to about 30 feet. Prince William Forest RV Campground is the main option for full hookups. Oak Ridge and Smallwood have flush toilets and drinking water, but Oak Ridge has no electrical hookups, no dump station, and only limited water spigots.
Bring USDA-certified heat-treated firewood or plan to buy locally, since Prince William Forest requires wood collected within 50 miles. Expect two-vehicle-per-site limits at Virginia State Parks and honor-system parking enforcement. Cell coverage varies, with weak signal reported at Oak Ridge despite the D.C.-metro proximity.
