Campgrounds and RV parks near Long Branch, VA

Prince William Forest Park anchors the outdoor options. The park protects the largest example of a piedmont forest ecosystem in the region and includes 37 miles of foot trails, a 12-mile Scenic Drive popular with cyclists, and 10 miles of gravel fire roads open to mountain bikes. Quantico Creek winds through the park, and wildlife sightings are common. Smallwood State Park sits on Mattawoman Creek and centers on Sweden Point Marina, which has 50 boat slips and access for fishing on the Potomac River, plus boat launches, picnic areas, an amphitheater, and short nature trails. Smallwood's Retreat, the restored plantation house, is open to visitors. From any of these bases, travelers can day-trip into Washington, D.C., Manassas National Battlefield Park, and the historic town of Occoquan.

The Northern Virginia camping season is shaped by hot, humid summers and cold, damp winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with mild days, cool nights, and vivid foliage in October and early November. Seasonal closures matter for planning. Oak Ridge Campground is open March through November and does not offer hookups. Prince William Forest RV Campground, by contrast, is open year-round. Greenville Farm Family Campground operates on an April through October season. Smallwood State Park offers two designated youth group camping sites, available from April through October, while the family campground loop stays available for reservation through the Maryland Park Service. Summer weekends fill quickly, especially at the national and state park campgrounds. Book several months ahead for Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, and expect biting insects, thunderstorms, and heat advisories from June through August.

Sites vary widely by park. Prince William Forest RV Campground offers 29 full hookup sites, 43 electric and water sites, and 4 electric-only sites, along with several tent-only sites, with all RV sites paved pull-throughs, plus heated restrooms with complimentary hot showers, a swimming pool, coin-operated laundry facilities, a small playground, and a dump station. Oak Ridge Campground has no hookups, caps RVs at 32 feet and trailers and fifth wheels at 26 feet, and provides picnic tables, fire rings, and lantern posts, with showers only in the B Loop restrooms, open to all campers. Smallwood State Park's sites include a camping pad, 50-amp electric and water hookups, a picnic table, a lantern post, and a fire ring with a grill attachment, with campsites accommodating tents, trailers and RVs up to 30 feet. Greenville Farm Family Campground, Inc. is a 200 acre working farm with 43 wooded acres developed for camping and mixes full-hookup pull-throughs with larger water-and-electric sections in the woods. Cell service is generally reliable near the developed parks but drops off inside the forest interior.
