Campgrounds near Merrifield
Merrifield sits in Fairfax County inside the Capital Beltway, putting RV travelers within a short drive of both Washington, DC attractions and the wooded parks of northern Virginia and southern Maryland. There is no campground inside Merrifield itself, so most travelers base out of parks in a rough ring around the metro area, choosing between a full-service commercial RV resort and quieter public campgrounds run by the National Park Service or Maryland state parks.
Cherry Hill Park in College Park, Maryland is the closest campground to Washington, DC and the most amenity-heavy option for RV families. To the south, Oak Ridge Campground - Prince William Forest Park sits roughly 35 miles southwest of Washington, DC, alongside the Prince William Forest RV Campground on the same park lands.
Smallwood State Park in Charles County, Maryland and Greenbelt Park Campground just northeast of DC round out the shortlist, giving travelers a mix of hookup sites, primitive national park loops, and waterfront state park camping within an hour of Merrifield.
Things to do near Merrifield
Most itineraries pair campground time with day trips into Washington, DC for the National Mall, Smithsonian museums, and monuments. Cherry Hill Park runs shuttle service to Metro and organizes sightseeing tours, which lets RV travelers leave the rig on-site and skip city traffic and parking.
For outdoor days, Prince William Forest Park preserves roughly 15,000 acres of piedmont forest, with hiking trails, CCC-era cabins, and quiet creek drainages. Smallwood State Park adds water recreation on Mattawoman Creek, with a marina holding around 50 boat slips, boat launch ramps, picnic areas, a playground, and nature trails for boating, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and biking.
Greenbelt Park Campground sits about 10 miles from Washington, DC and offers about 10 miles of wooded trails plus ranger programs a short drive from Merrifield.

The Washington region runs on a four-season Mid-Atlantic climate, and campground availability tracks it closely. Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travel: mild days, blooming or turning trees, and manageable humidity. Cherry blossom season in late March and early April drives heavy demand at campgrounds closest to DC, and reservations should be locked in months ahead.
Summer brings hot, humid weather with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Family bookings peak from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and shaded loops go first. Ticks are a real concern in the wooded parks, with a tick notice posted in the Mid-Atlantic region during spring and summer, so campers should use repellent and check daily.
Winter thins the field. Oak Ridge Campground - Prince William Forest Park closes for the season after November and reopens in March, while Greenbelt Park Campground operates year round with 172 sites. Cherry Hill Park also operates year round, making it the default cold-weather option for travelers staying near DC.

Great adventure for a novice. A little mixup on purpose of trip my not understanding that we were “boondogging” and not informing Owner so plumbing changes could be made to water supply so water would be available on our trip to Yale University and onward to Niagara Falls ON. Overall RV performed as expected. My two granddaughters my goddaughter the cat and the dog enjoyed our 1st RV venture. Looking forward to our next adventure and college evaluation searches. Owner was very responsive and helpful along the way. I’d like to say thanks for our first RV lesson.

Great Class B experience. This was our first Class B with a wet bath. It was nicely outfitted with cookware, towels, linens, pillows, and outdoor chairs, table, and large mat. The screen in the side door allowed us to open the sliding door while keeping the bugs out. Bob was supper responsive with great communications before and during the rental. We had a couple minor issues that he helped us work out quickly.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Merrifield%2C%20VirginiaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Merrifield?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Virginia, no commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement required, even for the largest Class A motorhomes on the platform. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the booking flow so there is nothing to mail in. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association, usually under $20. Upload your documents, get verified, and you are cleared to drive away from your Merrifield pickup.

Every RV rental in Merrifield, VA booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from pickup to return. For a Virginia RV trip exploring Shenandoah or the Chesapeake Bay, that built-in safety net lets you focus on the scenery instead of the paperwork.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy platform-wide (not individual hosts), so the same rules apply across every listing. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so your plans are protected. Many hosts ask for a small pet fee or extra cleaning deposit, which is shown upfront before you book. Once you've got the RV, Northern Virginia is a tail-wagging paradise: nearby Burke Lake Park allows leashed dogs on its 4.7-mile loop trail, and Shenandoah National Park (about 75 miles west) permits leashed pets on most trails, more than nearly any other national park. Pack a collapsible water bowl, bring vaccination records, and you're set for a great trip together.

Delivery fees usually scale with distance, often $2 to $4 per mile round trip. Just filter by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host to confirm your drop-off spot and timing.

Bull Run Regional Park in Centreville (about 14 miles) offers 150 sites with full hookups and a seasonal water park. Lake Fairfax Park in Reston (10 miles) has shaded sites and a great water playground. Pohick Bay Regional Park (20 miles south) sits right on the Potomac with electric and water sites. novaparks.com/parksWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Merrifield?
Late April through early June and September through October are the sweet spots: highs in the 65 to 78 F range, low humidity, and the Blue Ridge either bursting with wildflowers or glowing in fall color. July and August are summer-classic warm (85 to 92 F) with afternoon thunderstorms, which is still great for waterfront camping at Pohick Bay or beach trips to Assateague. November through March is quieter and cheaper, with daytime highs typically in the 40s and 50s, perfect for visiting DC museums by day and cozying up in a heated RV at night. Mid-October is the local insider's pick: fall foliage along Skyline Drive peaks and crowds thin out dramatically after Columbus Day weekend.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be in good hands. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through driving, leveling, the propane, the awning, the water systems, and dumping tanks, so nobody's left guessing. For your first time renting an RV in the Merrifield area, choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer (under 25 feet) which handle a lot like a big SUV. Avoid driving inside the Capital Beltway (I-495) during rush hour, stick to I-66 westbound for an easy shake-down run toward the Shenandoah, and use Bull Run Regional Park as a low-stress first night. Your host's number is in the app, and RVezy support is one tap away.
virginiadot.org/travel/What happens if I have a breakdown or problem on the road?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RV rental in Merrifield, VA booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, lockout, or tow is one phone number away, day or night. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after every trip if you hit a snag with the RV's systems. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway, snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate, and keep your host's contact handy too: many local owners can troubleshoot small issues over a quick call. Help is never far in the well-traveled DC corridor.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Merrifield RV rental out of state or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome: an RV road trip from Merrifield easily reaches Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Delaware, North Carolina, or New York without any special paperwork. Cross-border trips into Canada are sometimes allowed but depend on the specific host and their insurance, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Popular multi-state runs from Merrifield include the Outer Banks (about 6 hours south), the Pocono Mountains (4 hours north), and Acadia National Park (about 11 hours northeast). Bring your passport for Canada trips and let the host know your full route so they can confirm everything is good to go.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of gas mileage will my rental get, and what should I budget?
Plan on about 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A, 10 to 14 for a Class C motorhome rental in Merrifield, 16 to 20 for a Class B campervan, and 12 to 16 mpg for your tow vehicle with a travel trailer. Virginia gas prices typically run around $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon, slightly below the national average. For a weekend trip to Shenandoah (about 150 miles round trip) in a Class C, budget roughly $45 to $60 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Manassas or Front Royal where prices are 20 to 30 cents cheaper than inside the Beltway, and use the GasBuddy app to spot the best stations along I-66.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Merrifield?
For the most popular spots, book early: Virginia State Parks open reservations 11 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and summer weekends at Shenandoah's Big Meadows or Mathews Arm campgrounds fill within hours of release. NOVA Parks campgrounds like Bull Run and Pohick Bay take reservations up to 12 months ahead and sell out 2 to 4 months early for July, August, and holiday weekends. For shoulder-season trips (April, May, September, October) you can usually find availability 3 to 6 weeks out. Insider move: Sunday-through-Thursday stays at Pohick Bay are often wide open even in peak summer, and you'll have the Potomac shoreline practically to yourself.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/reservationsWhat are the driving conditions like around Merrifield?
Merrifield sits right off I-66 and the Capital Beltway (I-495), so the main thing to know is traffic timing: avoid the Beltway from 6 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. on weekdays, and head westbound out of town on Saturday mornings before 9 to beat the Shenandoah crowd. Roads are well-paved and RV-friendly in every direction, but watch for low-clearance overpasses in DC proper (the George Washington Parkway is closed to RVs entirely). Heading west on I-66, you'll climb gradually into the Blue Ridge with one steep grade near Front Royal. Use a GPS set to RV mode (RV Trip Wizard or Garmin RV) to auto-route around restrictions and you'll cruise stress-free.
virginiadot.org/travel/traffic.aspWhat amenities do campgrounds near Merrifield offer?
Most established RV camping near Merrifield offers full or partial hookups (50/30/20-amp electric, water, and sewer at premium sites), hot showers, flush toilets, dump stations, and potable water fill-ups. Bull Run, Pohick Bay, and Lake Fairfax all have dump stations included with your stay, and Pohick Bay even has a marina if you're bringing a boat. For free or low-cost dumping between trips, the Loudoun County Solid Waste Management Facility and several Flying J truck stops along I-66 and I-95 offer dump services for under $20. Always top off fresh water before leaving the campground, and ask your host whether the RV's tanks were emptied before pickup so you know your starting point.
fairfaxcounty.gov/publicworks/recycling-trashWhat's actually inside the RV I'm renting?
Expect a fully self-contained home on wheels: a real bed (or several), a kitchen with a stove, sink, fridge, and usually a microwave, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dining seating, climate control, and seatbelted passenger seats for travel. Most motorhome rentals in Merrifield include air conditioning, propane heat, a generator or shore power capability, and a TV; many also have WiFi hotspots or starter kits. Campervan rentals in Merrifield (Class B) are more compact but still pack in beds, basic kitchens, and often a wet bath. Each RVezy listing page shows exactly what is included with photos, sleep count, and amenity icons, so you can match the RV to your travel style before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Merrifield%2C%20VirginiaWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Merrifield RV rental?
Hosts offer all kinds of helpful add-ons to customize your trip: linens and bedding packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots and dishes ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generators, propane refills, portable grills, and even pre-stocked groceries. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on near Merrifield, often $75 to $200 within Fairfax County. Pickup and drop-off are usually at the host's home, though many will meet you at a nearby campground or even Dulles Airport for a fee. Review the listing's add-ons before booking and message the host with any custom requests; most are happy to accommodate to make your trip seamless.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Merrifield%2C%20VirginiaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, and the platform holds the funds so there is no cash exchange with the host. A refundable security deposit is handled separately from your booking payment, pre-authorized on your card before the trip and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good condition. To avoid any issues, take date-stamped photos and a short video of the RV's interior and exterior at pickup and again at drop-off. That simple habit protects everyone and keeps your deposit return drama-free.
