Camping near Newington, Virginia
Newington sits in Fairfax County just off I-95, roughly 15 miles south of Washington, D.C. The location puts RV travelers within an easy drive of national park land, Potomac River shoreline, and Maryland state parks, while keeping access to Metro-area attractions on the same day.
The closest developed camping is at Prince William Forest Park, a National Park Service unit south of Newington off I-95. Full hookups are available at Prince William Forest RV Campground, a concessionaire-operated campground inside the park boundary. Oak Ridge Campground, also within Prince William Forest Park, is a 100-site wooded campground about 35 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., offering tent and RV sites without hookups.
Across the Potomac in Charles County, Maryland, Smallwood State Park and Goose Bay Marina and Campground provide waterfront options on Mattawoman Creek and the Port Tobacco River. Aquia Pines Campground, a private park in Stafford off I-95, rounds out the choices for travelers who want full hookups closer to Fredericksburg.
Things to do near Newington
Prince William Forest Park preserves roughly 15,000 acres of piedmont forest and is the largest natural area in the region, with hiking trails, bike-friendly Scenic Drive, and Quantico Creek watershed access. The park sits about 35 miles from central Washington, D.C., putting Smithsonian museums, the National Mall, and Mount Vernon within reach of any campsite.
Water-based activities anchor trips to the Maryland side. Smallwood State Park has a marina and boat ramps on Mattawoman Creek, with bass fishing, kayaking, and access to the historic Smallwood's Retreat house. Goose Bay Marina and Campground sits on the Port Tobacco River near its confluence with the Potomac, with boat slips and shoreline sites.
Quantico, Fredericksburg Civil War battlefields, and the National Museum of the Marine Corps are all short drives from area campgrounds.

The camping season in the Newington area runs primarily spring through fall. Oak Ridge Campground in Prince William Forest Park operates from March through November. Prince William Forest RV Campground, the concessionaire-run park inside the same unit, operates year-round with full hookups and is Virginia's closest RV campground to Washington, D.C.
Spring brings cherry blossoms and moderate temperatures, making March through May a popular time for D.C. sightseeing trips. Summer is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and peak demand at both park and private campgrounds. Book early for holiday weekends, as sites fill quickly.
Fall offers cooler nights, lower humidity, and foliage color through October and into early November. Winter camping is limited: Maryland state park loops close after fall, and only private RV parks like Prince William Forest RV Campground and Aquia Pines Campground reliably operate through the cold months. Reservations for federal and state sites open well in advance, so summer weekends often sell out months ahead.

Great adventure for a novice. A little mixup on purpose of trip my not understanding that we were “boondogging” and not informing Owner so plumbing changes could be made to water supply so water would be available on our trip to Yale University and onward to Niagara Falls ON. Overall RV performed as expected. My two granddaughters my goddaughter the cat and the dog enjoyed our 1st RV venture. Looking forward to our next adventure and college evaluation searches. Owner was very responsive and helpful along the way. I’d like to say thanks for our first RV lesson.

Exceptionally responsive to questions before, during, and after the trip.

How to book campgrounds near Newington
Reservations for Oak Ridge Campground in Prince William Forest Park run through Recreation.gov, either online or by calling 877-444-6777. Bookings open up to six months in advance for National Park Service sites. Prince William Forest RV Campground, operated by a concessionaire, is booked directly by phone at 703-221-2474 or through the campground's website rather than through Recreation.gov.
Maryland state parks use a separate system. Reservations at Smallwood State Park can be made up to 365 days in advance by calling 1-888-432-CAMP or online at parkreservations.maryland.gov.
Private parks including Goose Bay Marina and Campground and Aquia Pines Campground take reservations directly by phone or through their websites.
What to expect at area campgrounds

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Newington, VA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Newington, VA?
An RV rental in Newington, VA typically runs $90 to $200 per night for travel trailers and campervans, while larger Class A and Class C motorhomes range from $200 to $400 per night. Because Newington sits right off I-95 between Washington, D.C. and Quantico, demand spikes during cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and federal holidays, so booking 6 to 8 weeks ahead locks in better rates. For a cheap RV rental in Newington, filter by travel trailers, look midweek, and message hosts about weekly discounts. Pro tip: pairing a smaller trailer with a Pohick Bay campsite is one of the best-value ways to explore the D.C. area.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newington,VirginiaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Virginia?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Newington. Virginia does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use recreational vehicles, even larger Class A motorhomes, as long as you're operating it for recreation. The only RVezy requirement is that you're 25 or older with a valid license, and ID verification happens right inside the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home-country license. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the paperwork is once they see how quickly the process moves.
dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/cdlWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Newington, VA?
Every RV rental in Newington, VA booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you are covered from the moment you pull out of the driveway. Protection plans help cover damage to the RV and give peace of mind, especially for first-time renters navigating the busy I-95 corridor. You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), so you can pick what fits your trip. Roadside assistance is included with every plan, making a Newington RV trip a low-stress decision.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Newington RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, and the policy is consistent across all bookings rather than displayed inside each listing. Cancellations made shortly after booking and well before the trip start date generally qualify for a higher refund, while cancellations closer to the trip date receive less. If a hurricane, tropical storm, or major Northern Virginia weather event impacts your trip, RVezy's support team reviews situations on a case-by-case basis. Review the full cancellation policy in the RVezy Help Center before you reserve so you know exactly what applies to your motorhome rental in Newington.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I find a pet-friendly RV rental in Newington, VA?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rentals in Newington are plentiful. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see rigs whose owners welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Once you have your RV, the local options for furry travelers are excellent: Pohick Bay Regional Park in Lorton allows leashed pets on its trails, Burke Lake Park has a roughly 4.7-mile lakeside loop perfect for morning walks, and Mason Neck State Park welcomes leashed dogs on most trails year-round. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and breed/size details so check-in goes smoothly and your pup is part of the adventure from day one.
novaparks.com/parks/pohick-bay-regional-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Newington?
Yes, RV delivery in Newington is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer for first-time renters who would rather skip driving a 30-foot rig down Fairfax County Parkway. Many hosts will deliver and set up your RV directly at Pohick Bay Regional Park, Burke Lake Park, Bull Run Regional Park, or your own driveway in the Fort Belvoir area. They will level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before leaving. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host to confirm distance fees. It is the easiest way to enjoy RV camping in Newington with zero driving stress.
novaparks.com/parks/pohick-bay-regional-parkHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Newington?
Newington's location at the I-95 and Fairfax County Parkway crossroads makes it a strong launch pad for an RV road trip on the East Coast. Shenandoah National Park is about 90 miles west (roughly 2 hours), Virginia Beach is about 200 miles southeast (around 3.5 hours), Assateague Island and its wild ponies are about 160 miles east (around 3 hours), and the northern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Waynesboro is roughly 130 miles southwest. Each host sets their own mileage policy: some offer generous daily allowances, others list RV rental with unlimited mileage. Check the listing's mileage section before booking, and message the host if your route is ambitious. Pro tip: ask about weekly mileage bundles for longer Virginia loops.
nps.gov/shen/index.htmWhere can I park or camp my RV near Newington, VA?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Newington include Pohick Bay Regional Park in Lorton (about 8 miles south, with wooded sites, electric and water hookups, and a waterpark), Burke Lake Park in Fairfax Station (about 12 miles west, around 100 shaded sites and a dump station), Bull Run Regional Park in Centreville (around 20 miles, with full-hookup sites), and Prince William Forest Park's Oak Ridge Campground in Triangle (about 25 miles south, near hiking trails). For overnight parking in Newington itself, stick to designated campgrounds, since Fairfax County restricts street RV parking. Pro tip: Pohick Bay's full-hookup loop is a local favorite for level pads and easy bay access.
novaparks.com/parks/pohick-bay-regional-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Newington?
April through early June and September through October are the sweet spots for a Newington RV trip. Spring brings average highs in the 60s to upper 70s F, blooming dogwoods, and the famous D.C. cherry blossoms just 20 miles north. Fall delivers crisp days in the 60s to low 70s F and brilliant foliage along the Blue Ridge. July and August are warm and humid (average highs in the upper 80s F) but great for Pohick Bay's waterpark and Potomac River paddling. Winter daytime highs typically sit in the 40s F, and many local RV rentals come heated for year-round use. Pro tip: book April weekends early, the cherry blossom crowd locks up rigs fast, and shoulder-season rates are noticeably friendlier on the wallet.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before. How do I know what I'm doing?
First time renting an RV? You are in great hands. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup (or upon delivery) covering propane, slide-outs, water systems, generator, and dump procedure. Many Newington-area hosts cater specifically to beginners and recommend starting at Pohick Bay Regional Park, just about 8 miles away, where the sites are level, the staff is helpful, and the drive from Newington is short and straightforward. You can also message your host any time during the trip with questions. Pro tip: choose a Class C or travel trailer for your first trip, they are easier to handle than a 35-foot Class A on Northern Virginia's tighter roads.
novaparks.com/parks/pohick-bay-regional-parkWhat happens if something breaks down during my RV trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Whether you are on I-95 near Newington or out in Shenandoah, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a direct line: most Newington hosts respond quickly and can troubleshoot quirks (like a finicky water pump) over the phone. RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip too. Pro tip: snap photos of every panel and switch during your walkthrough so you can reference them later, it saves time on the rare occasion something acts up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Newington RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, your Newington RV rental can cross state lines freely within the U.S. Most renters head north to Maryland and Pennsylvania, south to the Outer Banks, or west into West Virginia, all common and allowed. Cross-border travel into Canada requires explicit host approval in advance because insurance coverage must be confirmed, so message the host before booking if that is your plan. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because insurance does not extend there. Popular multi-state RV road trips from Newington include the Skyline Drive route south toward the Great Smoky Mountains and the coastal run from Assateague down to the Outer Banks. Pro tip: confirm any border-crossing details in writing through RVezy's messaging.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Newington?
Fuel budgeting is easier than you would think. Northern Virginia gas prices typically run close to the national average, and most Class C motorhomes get 8-12 MPG while travel trailers tow at 10-14 MPG depending on the tow vehicle. For a 3-day, 300-mile loop from Newington to Shenandoah and back, plan on roughly $120-$180 in fuel. Wawa and Sheetz stations along Route 1 and near I-95 around Newington tend to be easier to maneuver with an RV. Pro tip: fill up before you head into Fairfax County's denser neighborhoods, and use a price-comparison app like GasBuddy to find cheaper fuel near Lorton, the difference can be 20 cents a gallon between exits.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near Newington?
Book early and you will thank yourself. Pohick Bay Regional Park (reservations via NOVA Parks) and Burke Lake Park (Fairfax County Park Authority) both fill Saturday nights weeks in advance during spring and fall, especially Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day weekends. Aim for 2-3 months ahead for summer weekends and 4-6 weeks for shoulder seasons. Bull Run Regional Park books through NOVA Parks, and Prince William Forest Park uses Recreation.gov. Pro tip: midweek stays in May or September often have walk-up availability at Burke Lake, perfect if you want a spontaneous Newington RV trip without the planning headache.
novaparks.com/parks/pohick-bay-regional-parkWhat are driving conditions like around Newington for a campervan rental?
Newington itself is RV-friendly, with wide commercial roads near Fort Belvoir, the Fairfax County Parkway, and easy I-95 access. The challenge is timing: I-95 between Newington and D.C. crawls during weekday rush hours (roughly 6-9 a.m. and 3-7 p.m.), so plan departures around it. Avoid the George Washington Memorial Parkway in any RV, commercial vehicles and many larger recreational vehicles are restricted, and bridge clearances are limited. A campervan rental in Newington handles local roads easily. Pro tip: head west on I-66 or south on I-95 to escape traffic fast, you can be at a peaceful Pohick Bay campsite in under 20 minutes.
nps.gov/gwmp/planyourvisit/index.htmWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Newington?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable Newington RV trip. Pohick Bay Regional Park offers RV sites with electric and water hookups, hot showers, laundry, a dump station, and a camp store, plus a waterpark and marina on site. Burke Lake Park provides shaded sites with a dump station, bathhouse with hot showers, and potable water spigots (no individual hookups, so plan tank usage). Bull Run Regional Park has full-hookup sites and a seasonal water park. All accept reservations online. Pro tip: top off freshwater and dump your tanks at Pohick Bay before heading out for your next leg.
novaparks.com/parks/pohick-bay-regional-parkWhat's inside the RVs available in Newington?
Newington RV rentals come loaded for comfort. Expect real beds (queen or king in many Class C and Class A units, convertible dinettes for extra sleepers), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings include a TV, generator, outdoor speakers, and Wi-Fi boosters, useful if you plan to work remotely from Pohick Bay. Larger motorhomes often sleep 6-8 and have slide-outs for extra living space. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and check each listing's amenities tab carefully, hosts list everything from coffee makers to bike racks, and that detail helps you pack light.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newington,VirginiaWhat add-ons and pickup options do Newington hosts offer?
Hosts in Newington offer some of the most useful add-ons on RVezy: bedding and linen packages, camp chairs and tables, bike racks, generators, propane fills, and kid-friendly kits with games. Pickup is straightforward, most hosts meet you at their home for a hands-on walkthrough lasting 30-60 minutes, or they will deliver to Pohick Bay, Burke Lake, or your driveway for a flat fee. Mileage allowances vary by listing (some include 100-150 free miles per night, others offer unlimited), and the same is true for generator hours. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a stocked kit for a true turnkey family RV trip in Newington, you can show up with just clothes and food.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newington,VirginiaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, no cash exchanged with hosts. A refundable security deposit is held (not charged) on your card before the trip starts; if the RV comes back in the same condition, with tanks emptied and within mileage limits, the hold is released after the trip. Deposit amounts vary by listing (typically several hundred to a few thousand dollars) and appear clearly in your booking summary. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff with your host, it protects both sides and keeps your Newington RV rental experience smooth from start to finish.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a great weekend itinerary using Newington as a base?
Newington is a brilliant home base for a long weekend. Friday: pick up your RV, drive about 8 miles south to Pohick Bay Regional Park, set up camp, and walk the bayside trail at sunset. Saturday: drive to the Franconia-Springfield Metro station and spend the day at the Smithsonian museums or the National Mall without battling D.C. parking. Sunday: explore Mason Neck State Park's eagle-spotting trails or Gunston Hall, both within about 15 minutes of camp. Monday: head west on I-66 to Manassas National Battlefield (about 40 minutes) before returning the RV. Pro tip: this Metro-and-camp combo is the local insider move, you get city culture and quiet woods without ever moving the RV mid-trip.
