Camping near Pimmit Hills, Virginia
Pimmit Hills sits in Fairfax County just inside the Capital Beltway, minutes from Tysons and roughly a dozen miles from downtown Washington, D.C. The unincorporated community has no campgrounds within its own boundaries, so RV travelers base themselves at parks in the surrounding Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland corridor and use the region's highways and Metro service to reach the capital.
Cherry Hill Park in College Park, Maryland is the closest full-service RV campground to Washington, D.C., offering transit and guided tours into the city. South of Pimmit Hills, Oak Ridge Campground sits inside Prince William Forest Park, a wooded federal park about 35 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., and the nearby Prince William Forest RV Campground is a concessionaire-operated site with full hookups.
Across the Potomac in Maryland, Greenbelt Park Campground and Smallwood State Park round out the practical options for renters looking for a mix of national park, state park, and private-resort experiences within an easy drive of Pimmit Hills.
Things to do from a Pimmit Hills base
The primary draw is Washington, D.C. itself. The National Mall, Smithsonian museums, monuments, and Arlington National Cemetery are all reachable by car or Metro from the campgrounds listed above. Cherry Hill Park offers guided sightseeing tours departing directly from the campground, plus an on-site bus depot for city buses and tour buses into the capital.
For outdoor days, Prince William Forest Park protects one of the largest tracts of piedmont forest in the region, with roughly 15,000 acres, hiking trails, bike-accessible roads, and multiple lakes and creeks for fishing.
On the Maryland side, Greenbelt Park offers about ten miles of quiet wooded trails close to the Beltway, and Smallwood State Park's 984 acres include a marina, boat ramps, picnicking facilities, trails, and a nature center, with kayaking on Mattawoman Creek a common draw.

The Washington region runs a full four-season calendar. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with mild days, cherry blossom crowds in late March and early April, and reliable foliage from mid-October into early November. Summer is hot, humid, and thunderstorm-prone, and it is the peak booking window for family trips built around D.C. sightseeing.
Seasonal closures matter for planning. Oak Ridge Campground in Prince William Forest Park is open March through November, so winter trips need to shift to year-round options. Greenbelt Park Campground stays open year-round with 172 sites, showers, and restrooms, making it a useful cold-weather fallback. Smallwood State Park's family loop operates year-round, while its two designated youth group camping sites are available April through October.
Tick activity is significant in the Mid-Atlantic. Rangers post tick advisories through spring and summer, and campers should use repellent and check thoroughly after time in the woods.

Great adventure for a novice. A little mixup on purpose of trip my not understanding that we were “boondogging” and not informing Owner so plumbing changes could be made to water supply so water would be available on our trip to Yale University and onward to Niagara Falls ON. Overall RV performed as expected. My two granddaughters my goddaughter the cat and the dog enjoyed our 1st RV venture. Looking forward to our next adventure and college evaluation searches. Owner was very responsive and helpful along the way. I’d like to say thanks for our first RV lesson.

Great Class B experience. This was our first Class B with a wet bath. It was nicely outfitted with cookware, towels, linens, pillows, and outdoor chairs, table, and large mat. The screen in the side door allowed us to open the sliding door while keeping the bugs out. Bob was supper responsive with great communications before and during the rental. We had a couple minor issues that he helped us work out quickly.

How to book near Pimmit Hills
Federal, state, and private campgrounds in this region all use different systems. Sites in Prince William Forest Park, other than the Prince William Forest RV Campground, must be reserved through Recreation.gov, online or by calling 877-444-6777, up to six months in advance.
The Prince William Forest RV Campground is a concessionaire-operated campground with full hookups and books directly with the operator rather than through Recreation.gov. Greenbelt Park Campground also books six months ahead through Recreation.gov.
Reservations at Smallwood State Park can be made up to 365 days in advance by calling 1-888-432-CAMP or online at parkreservations.maryland.gov. Cherry Hill Park takes reservations directly through its own website and phone line, with cancellation terms set by the campground.
What to expect on site
Expect a clear split between full-hookup private resorts and primitive public parks. Cherry Hill Park offers 304 full-hookup RV sites, 19 tent sites, and glamping and yurt units about 17 miles from the National Mall, with 30 and 50-amp service, cable TV, and rigs accepted to 45 feet on a big-rig-friendly layout. Prince William Forest RV Campground adds a swimming pool, playground, full hookup sites, electric and water sites, modern restrooms, hot showers, and a dump station.
The federal campgrounds are more rustic. Oak Ridge Campground has no water or electric hookups and caps RVs at 32 feet. Greenbelt Park Campground is primitive, with an RV limit of 30 feet in B Loop and limited availability for larger vehicles up to 35 feet in D Loop, plus flush toilets, showers, and a dump station.
Quiet hours at the national park sites run 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., with generator use restricted overnight.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Pimmit Hills, VA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Pimmit Hills, VA?
RV rental in Pimmit Hills is surprisingly affordable for the DC metro area, with most nightly rates falling between $95 and $275 depending on the size and season. Compact campervans and small travel trailers sit at the lower end, while Class A motorhomes that sleep six or more land at the top. Spring cherry blossom weekends (late March to mid-April) and fall foliage trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway are peak periods, so booking 8 to 12 weeks ahead locks in the best price. For a cheap RV rental in Pimmit Hills, filter by travel trailers and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: midweek pickups in May or September often shave 15 to 25 percent off summer pricing.
fxva.com/blog/post/your-guide-to-rv-campgrounds-in-fairfax-county/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Pimmit Hills?
Good news, your everyday driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Pimmit Hills, VA. Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal recreational vehicles, even larger Class A motorhomes. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the secure booking platform so there's no paperwork to chase down at pickup. Visiting from outside the United States? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association before you fly in. Most first-time renters say the licensing step was the easiest part of the whole trip.

Every RV rental in Pimmit Hills booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-66 or the Capital Beltway with confidence. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and the plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip. Roadside help is one phone call away whether you have a flat tire in Tysons or a dead battery at a campground on the way to Shenandoah or Skyline Drive. Pick the coverage tier that fits your comfort level and focus on enjoying the trip.

Flexibility is built into every RVezy booking, so it is low risk to lock in your Pimmit Hills RV trip early. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and there is a money-back grace period right after you book that gives you time to confirm details with your group. After that, refund eligibility depends on how far out your trip is, which is reassuring during hurricane remnants or winter storms that occasionally hit Northern Virginia. Full policy details live on the RVezy Help Center. Pro tip: book early to score the best rigs for cherry blossom weekends, then finalize plans with confidence.

Yes, RV delivery in Pimmit Hills is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters who would rather skip driving through Tysons Corner traffic. Many hosts will bring the RV straight to your driveway, to a Fairfax County campground like Lake Fairfax or Burke Lake, or to a nearby pickup point convenient to Dulles International Airport. They will level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/lake-fairfax/campingWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Pimmit Hills?
Mid-April through early June and mid-September through late October are the sweet spots for an RV road trip from Pimmit Hills. Spring brings cherry blossoms in DC, bluebells at Bull Run, and daytime temperatures in the 60s and 70s. Fall delivers spectacular foliage along Skyline Drive with crisp 50s to low 70s and far fewer crowds. Summer (July and August) is hot and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, but lakeside campgrounds make it manageable. Winter trips are doable too if you choose an RV with a heated water tank and book a campground with year-round shore power. Pro tip: aim for the second week of October for peak foliage in the Blue Ridge.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never rented an RV before. Is Pimmit Hills a good place to start?
Pimmit Hills is actually a great launchpad for first time renting an RV. Every host on RVezy gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup (or delivery), walking you through the generator, water systems, slide-outs, and tow setup so nothing feels mysterious. You can also message any host before booking to ask anything from "how does the propane work" to "how does this drive on I-495." Many first-timers choose a Class C motorhome rental in Pimmit Hills because they drive like a big van and have a familiar dashboard. Pro tip: do a short shakedown trip to Lake Fairfax Park (12 miles away) on night one. You'll learn your rig in a calm setting before heading deeper into Shenandoah.
nps.gov/subjects/camping/index.htmWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You are never alone on an RVezy trip. Every booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether you have a flat on the Capital Beltway, a battery issue at a Shenandoah overlook, or you have locked the keys inside outside a Tysons grocery store, help is one call away. Your host is also a great first resource for system-specific questions like how to reset the inverter, since they know their rig best. And RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip through the Help Center. Save the roadside number in your phone before you pull out of the driveway and you can relax knowing every scenario is covered.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive my Pimmit Hills RV rental into Canada or another state?

You can drive your RV rental in Virginia straight into Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and beyond without any extra paperwork, which makes road trips to the Outer Banks, the Poconos, or New England very doable. Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so message the host directly before booking if you are dreaming of Niagara Falls or Quebec. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting fuel for an RV rental in Pimmit Hills is straightforward once you know the ranges. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches sit around 7 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, usually pulling 10 to 14 MPG. Northern Virginia gas prices typically run about $0.20 to $0.40 above the national average, so check stations along Route 7 or the Dulles Toll Road before heading out. Pro tip: GasBuddy and Costco in Pentagon City consistently price cheaper than gas stations near the Beltway. A round trip to Shenandoah National Park in a Class C averages roughly $60 to $80 in fuel.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Pimmit Hills?
For the best campgrounds near Pimmit Hills, plan to reserve 3 to 6 months ahead for peak season weekends. Lake Fairfax Park and Burke Lake reservations open through the Fairfax County Park Authority website and book out fast for cherry blossom season (late March) and summer weekends. Bull Run and Pohick Bay reservations go through the NOVA Parks system, with the spring bluebell weekends at Bull Run filling within hours. Shenandoah National Park's Big Meadows and Mathews Arm campgrounds open on Recreation.gov six months in advance to the day. Pro tip: midweek stays (Sunday through Thursday) almost always have last-minute openings, so a Tuesday-Wednesday Shenandoah escape is easy to pull off even in June.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2718What are local driving conditions like around Pimmit Hills?
Driving an RV around Pimmit Hills is very manageable once you know the rhythm of the DC metro. The neighborhood sits inside the triangle formed by I-495 (the Capital Beltway), I-66, and the Dulles Toll Road (Route 267), so you have three excellent escape routes. Avoid weekday rush hours (6:30 to 9:30 AM and 3:30 to 7:00 PM) when the Beltway crawls, and skip inner-city DC streets entirely since many have low bridges and tight clearances. Heading west on I-66 toward Shenandoah is the smoothest route. Winter brings occasional ice storms, while summer thunderstorms can be intense. Pro tip: ask your host for delivery if you would rather skip the urban driving and start your trip stress-free.

Northern Virginia campgrounds are well-equipped for any RV camping in Pimmit Hills trip. Lake Fairfax Park offers electric hookups (20/30/50 amp), a free dump station for registered campers, potable water fill, hot showers, and a camp store. Pohick Bay Regional Park has full hookup sites with sewer, electric, and water at each pad, plus a dump station and laundry. Bull Run Regional Park provides electric-only and full-hookup options along with bathhouses. Shenandoah's Big Meadows is more rustic with a dump station and water fills but no individual hookups. Pro tip: every Fairfax County Park Authority campground includes a free dump station, so even if you boondock in Shenandoah, you can empty tanks on your way back through Reston for nothing.
fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/lake-fairfax/campingWhat features and amenities are included inside a Pimmit Hills RV rental?
RVs available in Pimmit Hills come fully equipped for comfortable living on the road. Expect a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette and sofa sleeping, a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave, stove, and sink, and a bathroom with shower and toilet. Most Class C and Class A rentals include air conditioning (essential for humid Virginia summers), a furnace, a TV, and many offer WiFi hotspots or onboard generators for off-grid stays. Every road-legal seat has a seatbelt, so you'll know exactly how many passengers your motorhome rental in Pimmit Hills can safely carry. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list for an outdoor awning and exterior speakers. They make sunset hangouts at Pohick Bay or Lake Fairfax feel like a true vacation.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect?
RVezy hosts in Pimmit Hills typically offer a generous menu of add-ons to make your trip easier. Common options include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots and utensils ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor tables, bike racks, generators, propane refills, and grills. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Pimmit Hills, Falls Church, Tysons, or McLean with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Delivery to your driveway, campground, or even Dulles airport is offered by many hosts (mileage-based fees). Mileage policies range from 100 free miles per night to fully unlimited. Pro tip: bundle the linen kit and kitchen kit even on short trips. You'll save a packing headache and have everything ready when you arrive.
fxva.com/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Paying for your RV rental in Pimmit Hills is simple and secure. You pay directly through the RVezy platform with a credit card at booking, with no cash changing hands at pickup. A refundable security deposit is held during your trip (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) and released back to your card after the host confirms a smooth return. To avoid deposit issues, snap photos of the RV interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff, return it with fuel and propane levels matching the start of the trip, and empty the tanks at the dump station before handoff. Pro tip: do the walkthrough with the host checklist in hand so both sides are aligned.
