Campgrounds near Quantico Base
Quantico Base sits on the Potomac River in northern Virginia, roughly halfway between Washington, D.C. and Fredericksburg along the Interstate 95 corridor. RV travelers visiting the area for family reasons, Marine Corps events, or as a base for exploring D.C. have several options within a short drive, from a full-hookup private park inside a national park to state-park sites on tidal creeks in southern Maryland.
Prince William Forest Park sits just north of the base and preserves approximately 15,000 acres including a major portion of the Quantico Creek watershed. The park hosts two campgrounds used by RV travelers: Prince William Forest RV Campground, a concessionaire-operated campground with full hook-ups, pull-through sites, a pool, and a laundry facility, and Oak Ridge Campground, which offers a wooded, no-hookup experience deeper in the park.
Across the Potomac in Charles County, Maryland, Smallwood State Park and Goose Bay Marina and Campground add waterfront options on Mattawoman Creek and the Potomac. Aquia Pines Campground, a private park just south in Stafford, rounds out the RV park choices close to the base.
Things to do near Quantico Base
The National Museum of the Marine Corps sits near the north gate of the base and is the main draw for many visitors. Prince William Forest Park adds miles of quiet trail: hikers can explore 37 miles of foot trails, with the South Valley, Oak Ridge, and Farms to Forest trails all beginning at the Oak Ridge campground entrance. Bicyclists will find 21 miles of paved roads within the park, including a 12-mile Scenic Drive with a 25 mph speed limit and a 3-mile family-friendly paved bike lane leading to the campground.
On the Maryland side, Smallwood State Park offers a marina, boat launch ramps, picnic areas, a playground, an amphitheater, and nature trails, with boating, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing all on hand. Goose Bay Marina and Campground provides waterfront access on the Potomac with boat ramps and a swimming pool. Washington, D.C. and Mount Vernon are within roughly an hour by road, making day trips practical from any of the campgrounds listed.

Prince William Forest RV Campground, by contrast, is open year-round, as are Aquia Pines and Goose Bay for most site types. Smallwood State Park's family loop is generally open through the warm-weather season, with dates set by the Maryland Park Service.
Summer is peak season. Humidity, thunderstorms, and biting insects are the trade-off for long daylight and full facility hours. Fall brings cooler nights, foliage color across the Piedmont forest, and lighter crowds at inland sites. Spring is mild with wildflowers, but rain days pick up.
Winter camping is possible at the private and marina parks, though water service can be shut off during hard freezes and pool and marina amenities close. Snow is occasional rather than heavy: Quantico averages about 13 inches of snow per year, well below the U.S. norm.

How to book
The two campgrounds inside Prince William Forest Park use different systems. Oak Ridge Campground requires reservations for all campsites, which can be made up to six months in advance, including the day of arrival, online at Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777. Prince William Forest RV Campground is concessionaire-run and booked directly through the campground operator by phone at 703-221-2474 or via its own website.
Smallwood State Park uses the Maryland state system: reservations can be made up to 365 days in advance by calling 1-888-432-CAMP (2267) Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or online 24/7 at parkreservations.maryland.gov.
Aquia Pines Campground and Goose Bay Marina and Campground are private and book directly through their own websites or by phone. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill first, so plan several weeks out for summer stays.
What to expect
Site types vary widely. Prince William Forest RV Campground offers full hook-up, water-and-electric, and electric-only paved pull-through sites with 30-amp and 50-amp service, plus a pool, laundry, dump station, and propane for sale on site. Oak Ridge Campground has no electric or water hook-ups; restrooms with flush toilets and running water sit in each of the three loops, but only the B loop restrooms have showers. RV travelers wanting hook-ups should look to Prince William Forest RV Campground instead.
Rig length matters. At Oak Ridge, RVs may not exceed 32 feet in length and 12 feet in height, and trailers and fifth wheels are limited to 26 feet. Smallwood State Park campsites can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs up to 30 feet, and each site has 50-amp electric and water hookups, a picnic table, fire ring, and grill, with a dump station in the campground.
Cell coverage on major carriers is generally usable in the corridor, though it thins inside the deeper loops of Prince William Forest Park.
