Campgrounds and RV parks near Shenandoah Retreat, VA

Shenandoah Retreat is an unincorporated community in eastern Clarke County, Virginia, sitting on the east bank of the Shenandoah River at the foot of the Blue Ridge. The area works well as an RV base: it is rural, close to the river, and within a short drive of Harpers Ferry, the Appalachian Trail, and Shenandoah National Park. Most RV-friendly camping in the immediate area sits along the Shenandoah River corridor. Watermelon Park and RV Campground, a riverside park in nearby Berryville, is the closest full-service option and caters primarily to RVs with water and electric hookups. Harpers Ferry Campground and the Harpers Ferry / Civil War Battlefields KOA Holiday lie a short drive north across the West Virginia line. Smaller and more rustic options include Compound Historic Nature Preserve and Nahkeeta Campsite LLC, which suit travelers looking for quieter, less-developed sites. Together these campgrounds give RV renters a mix of full-hookup parks, KOA-style family resorts, and simpler nature stays within roughly a half-hour of Shenandoah Retreat.

Private parks in the area use their own systems. Watermelon Park and RV Campground books through Campspot, and the Harpers Ferry / Civil War Battlefields KOA Holiday books through koa.com or the KOA app. Harpers Ferry Campground, Compound Historic Nature Preserve, and Nahkeeta Campsite LLC accept reservations directly through their own websites, with some smaller sites also appearing on Hipcamp. All Shenandoah National Park campgrounds use Recreation.gov, with a rolling booking window that opens up to six months in advance of arrival. Big Meadows is reservation-only for individual sites, Mathews Arm and Loft Mountain hold a mix of reservable and first-come sites, and Lewis Mountain is first-come, first-served with self-registration on site. For fall foliage weekends and summer holidays, plan to book eight to twelve weeks out or as soon as the window opens. Weekday sites are usually available with shorter notice.
