Camping near Keyser, West Virginia
Keyser sits in Mineral County in West Virginia's eastern panhandle, along the North Branch of the Potomac River and within easy reach of the Allegheny Mountains, the Potomac Highlands, and neighboring Garrett County, Maryland. The area draws RV travelers looking for a mix of private riverside parks, mountain-ridge campgrounds, and rustic state-park sites, all within roughly an hour of town.
Closest to Keyser, Middle Ridge Campground sits west of Romney on a ridgetop and offers wooded sites suited to a range of rig sizes. Camp Wapocomo and Sleepy Hollow Campground put RV travelers along the South Branch of the Potomac, with river access for swimming, tubing, and fishing.
For state-park camping, Big Run State Park sits at the mouth of the Savage River Reservoir within Savage River State Forest, just across the Maryland line, and New Germany State Park sits nearby with a small lake and forested trail network. Both are useful base camps for hiking, paddling, and cool-weather trips into the higher elevations of Garrett County.
Things to do around Keyser
River activities anchor most trips. The South Branch of the Potomac near Romney is popular for tubing, kayaking, and smallmouth bass fishing, with drop-in access points along the river. The Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad runs seasonal excursions from Romney through the Trough, a remote canyon known for frequent bald eagle sightings.
Hikers head to Savage River State Forest, New Germany State Park, and the trail network around Big Run for wooded loops and stream walks. New Germany offers ten miles of multi-use trails and a 13-acre lake for fishing, swimming, and non-motorized boating. Deep Creek Lake in nearby Garrett County adds swimming, boat rentals, and a state park beach.
For day trips, Blackwater Falls, Dolly Sods Wilderness, Seneca Rocks, and Canaan Valley are all within driving distance and pair well with a multi-night RV stay.

Summer is the peak RV season around Keyser. Summers are warm and humid, with typical highs in the low to mid-80s Fahrenheit, and private parks along the South Branch fill on weekends, holidays, and during festival dates. Booking several weeks out is standard, and longer for the Fourth of July and Labor Day windows.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for cooler-weather campers. Wildflowers and higher stream flows arrive in April and May, while foliage in the surrounding ridges typically peaks from early to mid-October. Autumn visitors at Big Run have spectacular views of the changing colors on the surrounding mountain ridges, and fall weekends at both Big Run and New Germany book quickly.
Winter thins the crowd sharply. Winters are very cold and snowy, and many private campgrounds close their bathhouses and pools between late November and mid-April. Big Run's campsites are available year-round, though facilities are limited in the cold months. Expect snow, ice on secondary roads, and reduced services at higher elevations.
How to book campgrounds near Keyser
Private parks in the area handle their own reservations. Middle Ridge Campground, Camp Wapocomo, and Sleepy Hollow Campground take bookings directly by phone or through their websites, and some also list inventory on third-party marketplaces. Call ahead for big-rig sites, riverside spots, and holiday weekends.
All campsites at Big Run State Park are available by reservation through parkreservations.maryland.gov or by calling 1-888-432-CAMP. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 365 days in advance. New Germany State Park cabins and campsites use the same Maryland reservation system. New Germany is upgrading its water and wastewater systems in 2026 and 2027, which will close cabins, campsites, and pavilions at various times during construction, so check availability before planning a trip.
For any state-park stay in leaf season, set a cancellation alert if your target dates are full. Cancellations open up regularly.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into ridgetop and river-valley campgrounds are often narrow, winding, and partly gravel. Middle Ridge sits up a curved mountain road with a gravel entrance incline, and larger rigs should take the approach slowly. Trough Road south of Romney is not recommended for RVs; stay on the main routes into Camp Wapocomo.
There is no cell phone service at New Germany State Park, and coverage is spotty across much of the surrounding region, so download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival. Big Run offers rustic camping with unimproved campsites and a youth group camping area, while New Germany has a dump station, cabins, shelters, and a swim area. The private parks around Romney generally offer hookups, bathhouses, and camp stores.
Black bears, deer, and bald eagles are common in the surrounding forests. Standard food-storage practices and leashed pets are expected at every campground listed.

wvtourism.com/things-to-do/camping/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Keyser, WV?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Keyser, WV. West Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every Class A, Class B, Class C, travel trailer, and fifth wheel on RVezy. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the RVezy booking flow, so there is no paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before you fly in and you are set for your Keyser RV trip.

You can book with confidence: every RV rental in Keyser, WV booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you peace of mind whether you are navigating mountain switchbacks toward Dolly Sods or parking at a campground above Jennings Randolph Lake. It is meaningful financial protection so you can focus on the bald eagles overhead instead of the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Keyser RV rental?
Plans change, and RVezy makes it low-risk to lock in your dates. Every booking is covered by an RVezy cancellation policy set by RVezy and not by individual hosts, including a grace period right after you book so you can commit with confidence. Refund amounts after that window depend on how far in advance you cancel. If your host cancels, RVezy will refund you or help you rebook, which matters in a region that sees summer thunderstorms and occasional winter ice storms. Contact RVezy customer support if anything changes; they handle cancellations directly so you do not have to negotiate with your host.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Keyser RV trip?
Absolutely, Keyser is a dog lover's basecamp. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Keyser options, and you can filter directly for Pet-Friendly listings on RVezy before booking. Once you're on the road, your pup will be welcome at the Robert W. Craig Campground at Jennings Randolph Lake (leashed, six-foot max) and on trails at nearby Larenim Park in Mineral County. The North Branch Rail Trail along the Potomac is another easy, scenic leg-stretcher right out of town. Pro tip: message hosts to ask about pet fees and bring a collapsible water bowl, since summer humidity in the Allegheny foothills can climb fast.
nab.usace.army.mil/Missions/Civil-Works/Recreation/Jennings-Randolph-Lake/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite near Keyser?
Yes, RV delivery Keyser is one of the smartest moves for first-time renters. Many local hosts will drive, level, and set up the RV at your chosen campground or driveway, then walk you through every system before they leave, no white-knuckle mountain driving required. Popular delivery destinations include the Robert W. Craig Campground at Jennings Randolph Lake (about 25 minutes out), Greenland Gap, and private spots around Mineral County. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, then message them with your campsite number and arrival time. Delivery fees vary by mileage, but for nervous drivers it's worth every dollar.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233604How far can I drive on a typical Keyser RV rental?
You have real range from Keyser, and many hosts include a generous daily mileage allowance, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. From Keyser, you can reach Cumberland, MD in about 25 minutes, Deep Creek Lake in roughly an hour, Seneca Rocks in about 90 minutes, Blackwater Falls State Park in roughly 1 hour 45 minutes, and Washington, D.C. in about 2 hours 30 minutes. Check each listing's mileage policy before booking, and if you are planning a bigger loop, message the host directly to ask about a flat-rate mileage add-on. It is almost always cheaper than paying per-mile overage.
wvtourism.com/places-to-go/potomac-highlands/Where are the best campgrounds near Keyser, WV?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Keyser. Top picks include the Robert W. Craig Campground at Jennings Randolph Lake (68 sites, all with electric, hot showers, ranger programs on Saturday nights), Middle Ridge Campground west of Romney with full hookups and resident donkeys, Barnum Whitewater Area along the North Branch Potomac for rustic riverside sites, and Rocky Gap State Park just over the Maryland line with full hookups and lake swimming. Spring Gap Recreation Area on the C&O Canal is another easy overnight option about 40 minutes east. Pro tip: Robert W. Craig books up months ahead for summer weekends, so reserve as soon as the Recreation.gov window opens.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/183When is the best time of year for a Keyser RV trip?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot for any Keyser RV trip, with May through October offering the most reliable weather and full campground operations. Summer highs sit comfortably in the upper 70s to mid-80s, with cool 60-degree mountain nights perfect for campfires. Mid-September to late October is the local insider favorite: foliage along the Allegheny Front explodes in color, crowds thin out, and bugs disappear. Winters around Keyser get genuinely cold (lows in the teens and 20s with occasional snow), so most campgrounds like Robert W. Craig close from October through April. If you're chasing fall color, book by mid-August because October weekends fill fast.
weather.gov/rlx/I've never rented an RV before. What should I expect at pickup?
First time renting an RV in Keyser? You're in great hands. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through propane, water, electrical, slide-outs, the dump valves, and any quirks specific to that rig, usually 30 to 60 minutes of practical training. You can ask questions until you're comfortable, and most hosts share a phone number for trip-long support. Keyser's relatively quiet roads (US 220 and WV 46) are forgiving places to get your bearings before heading into mountain terrain. Pro tip: arrive at pickup well-rested with a notepad, take a short test drive around the host's neighborhood, and don't be shy about asking them to repeat the dump-station steps.
fmcsa.dot.gov/safety/driver-safety/cmv-driving-tips-following-too-closelyWhat if my RV breaks down during my trip?
You will not be stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on WV 972 or a dead battery at the campground is a quick phone call away from help. Coverage includes towing, tire service, jumpstarts, lockout help, and fuel delivery. Your host is also a direct line for quick troubleshooting, and RVezy customer support is available around the clock. Save the roadside number to your phone before you leave Keyser, because cell service drops in the mountains around Dolly Sods and Spruce Knob.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Keyser, WV?
An RV road trip from Keyser puts some of the East's best scenery within easy reach. Top routes include Seneca Rocks and Spruce Knob (West Virginia's highest point) about 90 minutes south; the Blackwater Falls and Canaan Valley loop roughly 2 hours southwest; Deep Creek Lake, MD about an hour north for lakeside camping; the C&O Canal and Cumberland, MD just 25 minutes east for biking the Great Allegheny Passage; and Shenandoah National Park's Skyline Drive about 2.5 hours east. Cross-border travel into Canada or Mexico requires host approval and may not be permitted under the RV's insurance, so always confirm with your host before booking any international leg.
nps.gov/choh/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for around Keyser?
Plan smart and fuel won't break your budget. Class C motorhomes around Keyser typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs 6 to 10 mpg, campervans 15 to 20 mpg, and trucks towing travel trailers 10 to 14 mpg. Gas in Mineral County usually runs a little below the national average, with stations clustered along US 220 in Keyser and Cumberland. For a 5-day, 400-mile loop in a Class C, budget around $180 to $250 in fuel. Pro tip: the climbs up to Dolly Sods and Spruce Knob burn fuel fast, so top off in Petersburg or Davis before heading into the highlands where stations are scarce.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Keyser?
Book early and your trip falls into place. The Robert W. Craig Campground at Jennings Randolph Lake takes reservations through Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month window, and summer weekends (especially Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day) sell out within days of opening. West Virginia State Parks like Blackwater Falls book through wvstateparks.com up to 13 months ahead. For shoulder-season trips in May or late September, two to three weeks of lead time is usually plenty. Pro tip: if your dream site is gone, set up a cancellation alert; people drop sites constantly, and a midweek opening at Robert W. Craig is one of the best campsites in the region.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233604What are the driving conditions like around Keyser?
Keyser sits in the Allegheny foothills, so expect mountain driving with rewarding views. US 220 and WV 46 are well-maintained two-lane roads with moderate grades, manageable in any Class C or smaller rig. Heading south toward Petersburg or west to Davis, you'll hit steeper climbs and switchbacks (Allegheny Front, North Fork Mountain), so take it slow, downshift on descents, and watch for deer at dawn and dusk. Winter brings ice and snow, especially above 2,500 feet, which is one reason most rentals run April through October. Pro tip: download offline maps before leaving Keyser; cell service drops once you're west of Mount Storm.
transportation.wv.gov/highways/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Keyser?
Local campgrounds make RV life easy. Robert W. Craig Campground has 30/50-amp electric at all 68 sites, water hydrants every few sites, hot showers, flush toilets, a dump station, and a small camp store. Middle Ridge Campground offers full hookups including sewer. Rocky Gap State Park (just over the Maryland line) has full hookups, a beach, and a dump station near the entrance. For dumping and fresh water on travel days, the Sheetz in Cumberland and Flying J locations along I-68 are reliable options. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter; older mountain campgrounds occasionally have spaced-out hookups that surprise first-timers.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233604What's inside a typical RV rental in Keyser?
You'll feel right at home. A typical motorhome rental Keyser comes fully equipped with a queen or king bed, bunk or convertible dinette sleeping space, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control, dining/lounge area, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most include a roof-mounted air conditioner, propane furnace, fresh and gray water tanks, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid stays. Many Keyser hosts add a TV, Bluetooth speakers, and outdoor chairs. Wi-Fi is sometimes included but coverage is spotty in the mountains, so plan for a hotspot if you need to work. Check each listing's amenity list and message the host to confirm specifics like generator hours.
fcc.gov/consumers/guides/cell-phone-coverageWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for a Keyser RV rental?
Hosts in Keyser make customizing your trip easy. Popular add-ons include linen and bedding packages, kitchen kits, bike racks, generators, propane fills, fire pits, kayaks, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in or near Keyser, typically in the early afternoon, with drop-off in the late morning, though many hosts are flexible if you message in advance. Mileage policies range from a set number of free miles per day to unlimited, with overage charged per mile when applicable. Generator hours are sometimes capped. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book on RVezy if you want to lock in your campervan rental Keyser plans tonight without waiting for host approval.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106394-How-to-pay-for-your-bookingHow do payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Keyser?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy. You pay the booking total (rental, protection plan, and service fee) by credit card when you book, with no cash changing hands at pickup. A separate security deposit, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV, is held (not charged) on your card before your trip starts and released after a clean return, assuming no damage or unpaid mileage/fuel. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos and a quick video of the RV inside and out at both pickup and drop-off, return it with fuel and waste tanks as agreed, and message your host through RVezy so there is a written record.
