Campgrounds near Ridgeley, West Virginia
Ridgeley sits on the West Virginia side of the Potomac River, directly across from Cumberland, Maryland. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park on the Maryland side of the Potomac, the Allegheny Highlands, and a mix of private RV parks and federal campgrounds.
Closest to town, Eagle's Nest Campground offers full-hookup sites on Patterson Creek Village Pike, roughly 9 miles outside of Cumberland, with 30 and 50 amp service and a family-oriented setup. Hidden Springs Campground, Millesons Walnut Grove Campground, and Middle Ridge Campground round out the private options in the surrounding ridge-and-valley country, catering to RVs of varying sizes.
For a more primitive experience along the river, Spring Gap Campground is located at Mile 173.3 on the C&O Canal Towpath, near Cumberland on the Maryland side of the Potomac. It is a National Park Service campground with limited amenities but direct water and towpath access, suited to smaller rigs.
Things to do near Ridgeley
The C&O Canal Towpath is the headline attraction. It runs flat for miles along the Potomac and links directly to the Great Allegheny Passage in downtown Cumberland, making the area a hub for cyclists and long-distance bikepackers. Popular activities at Spring Gap include hiking local trails, biking the towpath, paddling, and fishing, and the campground has a boat ramp providing easy access to the Potomac for kayakers and anglers.
In Cumberland itself, visitors can stop at the Allegany Museum, Gordon-Roberts House, Gilchrist Gallery, and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Rocky Gap State Park, roughly 11 miles from Spring Gap, adds a swimming lake and beach.
Anglers should note that a Maryland Fishing License is required for those age 16 or older when fishing the Potomac from the Maryland bank.

The camping season in this corner of the Alleghenies runs strongest from late spring through mid-fall. Summer brings warm days, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms typical of the mid-Atlantic ridge country. Bugs and river humidity can be noticeable near the Potomac, and evenings often cool off even in July and August.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for the towpath and for private parks like Eagle's Nest. Fall foliage in the ridges around Ridgeley usually peaks in mid to late October. At Spring Gap, water access is seasonal: the hand pump well is turned on April 15 through November 1, so campers outside that window should bring their own water.
Winter camping is possible but bare-bones. Spring Gap is open year-round with reservations through Recreation.gov, though facilities are minimal in the cold months. Private campgrounds in the area often shift to reduced services or seasonal-only operation, so confirm dates before booking a shoulder-season trip.
How to book a campsite near Ridgeley
Reservations are required at Spring Gap Campground and all other drive-in campgrounds within the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park; paying cash on arrival is not an option. Bookings can be made up to six months in advance at Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777 with a credit or debit card. Sites are limited, with 12 standard campsites and 2 group campsites, so summer weekends fill quickly.
RV size matters at Spring Gap. Trailers can be no longer than 20 feet, and the road through the campground ends in a loop, so turning around is manageable. Larger rigs should book Eagle's Nest or another private park directly by phone or through the operator's website.
What to expect at Ridgeley-area campgrounds
Expect a split between primitive federal sites and full-service private parks. Spring Gap is basic: pit and portable toilets are available, hand pump water runs seasonally, and there are no hookups and no trash service, so campers must pack out all waste. Road noise from nearby Route 51 and occasional train traffic affect the atmosphere, so light sleepers should plan accordingly.
Private campgrounds around Ridgeley skew family-oriented and RV-friendly. Eagle's Nest has three rows of RV campsites totaling 80 sites, each with 30 or 50 amp electrical hookup, water, and on-site sewage, plus horseshoes, cornhole, volleyball, and basketball, along with an on-premises restaurant and lounge.
Cell coverage in the river valley can be spotty. Download offline maps and confirm check-in windows before arrival, especially at unstaffed National Park Service sites.
