Campgrounds near Romney, West Virginia
Romney sits in Hampshire County in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, along the South Branch of the Potomac River. The area is a practical base for RV travelers heading into the Allegheny foothills, with private riverside parks, a mountaintop campground, and a National Park Service drive-in site all within roughly a half-hour radius. Route 50 runs east to west through town and connects most local campgrounds to I-68 near Cumberland, Maryland.
The closest options include Middle Ridge Campground on Middle Ridge Road, west of town on top of the ridge, and Camp Wapocomo, located along the South Branch of the Potomac River about five miles south of Romney. Further out, Millesons Walnut Grove Campground sits along the same river near Springfield, and Eagle's Nest Campground is in Ridgeley near Cumberland.
Across the state line in Maryland, Spring Gap Campground - Chesapeake Ohio Canal National Park sits at Mile 173.3 on the C&O Canal Towpath, near Cumberland on the Maryland side of the Potomac River, giving RV travelers access to towpath biking, paddling, and river fishing.
Things to do near Romney
River recreation drives most trips to the area. The South Branch of the Potomac runs past several campgrounds and supports fishing, tubing, kayaking, and swimming from gravel beaches. Paddlers commonly float down to Camp Wapocomo, and Millesons Walnut Grove has an on-site boat launch and river beach access.
Land-based options include the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad out of Romney, hiking and swimming at Middle Ridge Campground, and cycling the C&O Canal Towpath from Spring Gap Campground - Chesapeake Ohio Canal National Park. Spring Gap has a boat ramp for kayakers, canoeists, and anglers accessing the Potomac River.
Day trips reach Cumberland, Maryland; Green Ridge State Forest; and Cacapon Resort State Park east of Romney.

The main camping window in the Romney area runs from mid-spring through late fall. Camp Wapocomo operates from April 15 through October 31, and Millesons Walnut Grove follows a similar April-through-October window. Middle Ridge Campground stays open year-round, but its bath house closes in late November and reopens April 15, so shoulder-season and winter stays require self-contained rigs.
Summer is peak season. School holidays, warm river temperatures, and the Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends push river-facing sites to fill weeks ahead. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and foliage color across the ridges through mid-to-late October, and it is a strong window for RV travelers who want quieter grounds.
Winter access is limited. Spring Gap Campground - Chesapeake Ohio Canal National Park is open year-round with reservations through Recreation.gov, but its hand-pump potable water is only available from April 15 through November 1, and stays are limited to 14 consecutive days between May 1 and October 1.
How to book campgrounds near Romney
Private parks in the Romney area take direct bookings. Camp Wapocomo, Middle Ridge Campground, and Millesons Walnut Grove each handle reservations through their own offices or websites, and phone booking is standard practice at the smaller family-run parks. Eagle's Nest Campground in Ridgeley also books direct through the operator.
Spring Gap Campground - Chesapeake Ohio Canal National Park is the exception. Reservations are required to camp there and at all other drive-in campgrounds within Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, cash on arrival is not accepted, and reservations can be made online up to six months in advance at Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777 with a credit or debit card. For summer weekends and any holiday, book as far ahead as the window allows.
What to expect on the ground
Access roads are rural and often steep. The entrance to Middle Ridge Campground is a gravel incline, and the campground sits west of town at the top of the ridge, reached by a curved mountain road. Larger rigs should confirm site accessibility before arrival. Millesons Walnut Grove is reached by a country dirt road and shares its property with a working livestock farm.
Hookups vary widely. Camp Wapocomo offers full-hookup, water-and-electric, and primitive sites along the river, with a bath house, dump station, boat ramp, and camp store. Middle Ridge has full-hookup and pull-through sites, a swimming pool, and a dump station. Spring Gap is primitive: trailers can be no longer than 20 feet, and campers pack out all trash. Cell service is spotty in the ridges; expect Wi-Fi only at the private parks.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Romney, WV
How much does an RV rental in Romney, WV typically cost?
Good news: Romney is one of the most affordable RV rental spots in the Eastern Panhandle. On RVezy, you'll generally find travel trailers from about $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches from $250 to $400 nightly. Hampshire County sees lighter demand than the DC suburbs, so a cheap RV rental in Romney is genuinely possible. Pro tip: book midweek (Sunday through Thursday) and aim for shoulder season in late April or October when fall foliage along the South Branch of the Potomac is spectacular and rates dip 15 to 25 percent.
wvtourism.com/town-guide-romney/What license do I need to rent an RV in Romney, West Virginia?
Great news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in West Virginia. There is no special RV endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required for any of the motorhomes or travel trailers listed on RVezy, including Class A coaches. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home country license. That's the whole list, no DMV trips, no road tests, just pick up your keys in Romney and go.
transportation.wv.gov/DMV/Drivers/Pages/Drivers-Licenses.aspxWhat protection comes with my Romney RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Romney through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore the back roads of Hampshire County with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle, and you choose the coverage level during checkout, not the host. This is not traditional auto insurance, but it is substantial financial protection designed specifically for peer-to-peer RV rentals. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers on the booking page and pick the level that matches your comfort for that Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad weekend.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I cancel my Romney RV booking if my plans change?
Yes, RVezy builds flexibility into every booking. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and there is a money-back grace period right after you confirm, so you can lock in the perfect rig for your Romney RV trip without second-guessing. Refunds beyond the grace period depend on how far in advance you cancel, which matters in a region that occasionally sees winter storms or summer flooding along the South Branch of the Potomac. If something major comes up, contact RVezy support directly and they will walk you through your options. Book your RV rental in Romney with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Romney RV trip?
Yes, and Romney is genuinely dog-friendly country. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see every pet-friendly RV rental in Romney, then pack the leash. Wapocoma Campground south of town welcomes leashed pets along the South Branch of the Potomac, and Fort Mill Ridge Wildlife Management Area has open trails where dogs love to roam. The George Washington National Forest just east of town is also dog-friendly on most trails. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any cleaning fee or pet add-on, then plan a riverside walk at Wapocoma's beach for a guaranteed tail-wagging afternoon.
wapocoma.com/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Romney?
Yes, RV delivery in Romney is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you're new to RVing. Many RVezy hosts in Hampshire County will drive the rig directly to Wapocoma Campground, Middle Ridge Campground, or even a private property, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see who offers it. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location. Pro tip: bundle delivery with setup and pickup so your whole motorhome rental in Romney is essentially turnkey, just show up with groceries.
wvtourism.com/town-guide-romney/How far can I drive on an RV road trip from Romney?
Plenty far, and Romney sits in a sweet spot for short scenic loops. Many RVezy hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and you can add an RV rental with unlimited mileage as an option on many listings. From Romney you are about 35 miles to Berkeley Springs, 65 miles to Seneca Rocks, 100 miles to Blackwater Falls State Park, 75 miles to Harpers Ferry, and roughly 110 miles to Washington, DC. A classic RV road trip from Romney loops through the Potomac Highlands in three or four days. Pro tip: if you are planning a longer haul, ask the host about an unlimited mileage upgrade upfront, it is usually cheaper as an add-on than paying per-mile overage.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Romney%2C%20West%20VirginiaWhere are the best campgrounds near Romney, WV?
You have several great options right in town. Wapocoma Campground, just south of Romney on the South Branch of the Potomac, offers shaded sites with full hookups, a boat ramp, and river swimming (seasonal, open spring through fall). Middle Ridge Campground sits a bit higher on Middle Ridge Road and offers full hookups and cabin rentals. About 30 miles east, Rocky Gap State Park in Maryland adds a lakefront option with a sandy beach. Pro tip: confirm payment methods at Wapocoma before arrival, smaller family-run campgrounds sometimes prefer cash or check at the gate for your South Branch RV camping weekend.
wapocoma.com/When is the best time to visit Romney in an RV?
Mid-April through late October is prime time for RV camping in Romney, with the real sweet spots being May (highs around 72F), September (mid-70s and gorgeous), and the first three weeks of October when the Allegheny foothills turn red and gold. Summer (June through August) brings warm, humid days in the mid-80s with occasional afternoon thunderstorms, perfect for tubing the South Branch. Winter is cold (January averages 22F to 36F with snow), but some local campgrounds stay open year-round if you want a quiet, snowy getaway. Pro tip: book Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad's fall foliage trains months ahead, they sell out every October weekend.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Romney?
You'll be just fine, and Romney is actually a forgiving place for first time renters. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, slide-outs, water, propane, dump procedures, and driving tips before you ever turn the key. Romney's surrounding roads are mostly two-lane and low-traffic, US Route 50 and WV-28 are scenic and easy to handle. If city driving worries you, skip it: stay west toward Seneca Rocks rather than east toward DC. Pro tip: for your first time renting an RV, start with a Class C motorhome (drives like a big van) or have the host deliver a travel trailer so you can skip towing entirely.
wvtourism.com/town-guide-romney/What happens if the RV breaks down during my Romney trip?
Help is one phone call away, 24/7. Every RVezy booking includes round-the-clock roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flats, jump-starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Cell service is solid on US-50 and along the South Branch corridor, though it can get spotty in the hollows around Fort Mill Ridge or deep in George Washington National Forest. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before departure, and your host's number too, hosts often know a trusted local mechanic in Romney or Keyser. Pro tip: take a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you can share details quickly if you need a tow.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Romney RV rental across state lines?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and Romney is perfectly positioned for it. From here you can easily roll into Maryland (Rocky Gap State Park is 30 miles east), Virginia (Shenandoah National Park is about 90 miles southeast), Pennsylvania, or all the way to Washington, DC in roughly 2 hours. Travel into Canada may be allowed on some listings, just message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the protection package doesn't extend there. Pro tip: a popular 4-day loop from Romney runs through Harpers Ferry, Gettysburg, and back via Cumberland, Maryland, about 350 miles total and packed with history.
nps.gov/hafe/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Romney RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to plan for. Travel trailers don't burn extra gas beyond what your tow vehicle uses, while Class C motorhomes in this region typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon and Class A coaches 6 to 9 MPG. Gas prices in Hampshire County usually run a few cents below the national average, with stations in Romney along US-50 (Sheetz and the local Exxon are popular fill-ups). For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C at $3.20/gallon, budget around $100 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Romney before heading toward Seneca Rocks or Petersburg, prices climb noticeably as you go deeper into the mountains.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Romney?
For peak summer weekends and any October foliage weekend, reserve your campsite 2 to 4 months ahead. Wapocoma Campground books up fast for Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, so reserve early through the campground directly. Middle Ridge takes reservations year-round and is easier to snag on short notice. For Rocky Gap State Park across the Maryland line, use the Maryland state park reservation system, and for any sites in George Washington National Forest, book through Recreation.gov. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) at any Romney area campground are dramatically easier to score and often quieter, perfect for a peaceful Hampshire County RV camping getaway.
recreation.gov/What are local driving conditions like around Romney?
Driving around Romney is genuinely pleasant: light traffic, scenic two-lane highways, and well-maintained surfaces. US Route 50 runs east-west through town and handles big rigs easily, while WV-28 south to Petersburg is curvier but very doable. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk (Hampshire County is one of West Virginia's most active deer zones) and be cautious on the steep grade climbing out of the South Branch valley on Middle Ridge Road. Winter brings occasional snow and ice from December through March. Pro tip: skip the narrow back roads around Fort Mill Ridge in anything larger than a 30-foot Class C, stick to US-50 and South Branch River Road for stress-free RV travel.
transportation.wv.gov/Highways/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at Romney area campgrounds?
You will be well taken care of. Wapocoma Campground offers full hookups (20/30/50-amp electric, water, sewer) on most sites, plus a dump station, bath house with hot showers, camp store, propane refills, ice, a playground, boat ramp, and a river swimming beach. Middle Ridge has full hookup sites and a dump station, with potable water available. Both accommodate big rigs, though larger Class A coaches should call ahead about access and turns. Pro tip: bring a few gallons of drinking water or a charcoal filter for your fresh tank fill in case local water has a mineral taste, otherwise you are set for a great South Branch stay.
wapocoma.com/What's actually inside the RVs available in Romney?
More than you might expect. Most Romney RV rentals come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, a dinette and sofa that convert to extra sleeping space, a working bathroom with toilet and shower, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and basic cookware, roof AC, furnace, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Many listings also include a generator, outdoor speakers, a TV, and a WiFi hotspot. Sleep capacity ranges from 2 (campervan rental Romney) up to 8 or more (Class A or bunkhouse travel trailer). Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenities list carefully, and message the host to confirm specifics like whether linens, towels, and a starter propane tank are included for your Hampshire County trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Romney%2C%20West%20VirginiaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Romney hosts offer a great range of add-ons to customize your trip: delivery and setup, linens and towels packages, camp chairs and outdoor mats, generators, kayaks, bike racks, fishing gear, and pre-stocked propane. Typical pickup is at the host's home in or near Romney, and most walkthroughs take 30 to 45 minutes. Mileage policies vary, common allowances are 100 to 150 free miles per night with unlimited mileage as a paid upgrade. Pro tip: if you're heading to the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad or planning a float trip on the South Branch, ask your host about kayak or tube add-ons, many already have them and it beats hauling your own gear to Romney.
wvtourism.com/town-guide-romney/How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host, which protects you and creates a clean record. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before pickup (amount varies by RV) and released after the trip once the host confirms everything came back in good shape. To avoid issues, take time-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video of the RV at pickup and drop-off. Pro tip: keep fuel and propane levels matched to pickup conditions (your host will note them on the walkthrough), it is the single most common deposit deduction and easy to avoid.
