Camping near Wiley Ford, West Virginia
Wiley Ford sits in Mineral County, West Virginia, directly across the North Branch of the Potomac River from Cumberland, Maryland. The community lies near a former ford in the North Branch of the Potomac River, and the Greater Cumberland Regional Airport occupies a bend in the river at Wiley Ford. That location puts RV travelers within a short drive of a national park, several private campgrounds, and the trailheads for two long-distance rail trails.
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park skirts the town on the river's opposite bank, and the towpath connects with the Great Allegheny Passage in downtown Cumberland to form a continuous route toward Pittsburgh. Options close to town range from primitive, park-service sites at Spring Gap Campground - Chesapeake Ohio Canal National Park to full-hookup private parks like Eagle's Nest Campground in nearby Ridgeley.
For travelers with larger rigs, Millesons Walnut Grove Campground and Middle Ridge Campground sit farther south toward Springfield and Romney, while Hidden Springs Campground extends the search north across the state line. The mix suits both quick weekend trips and longer stays built around biking, paddling, and Civil War history in the Cumberland area.
Things to do around Wiley Ford
The C&O Canal towpath is the anchor activity. Popular activities for Spring Gap campers include hiking the local trails, biking the C&O Canal Towpath, paddling, and fishing, and the campground has a boat ramp for easy access to the Potomac River for kayakers and anglers. A Maryland fishing license is required for those age 16 or older.
In Cumberland itself, families can ride the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and tour the visitor center at Canal Place. The C&O Canal National Historical Park Cumberland Visitor Center is open seven days a week, and the Allegany Museum, Gordon-Roberts House, and Gilchrist Gallery are worth a visit as well.
Cyclists often stage day rides on the Great Allegheny Passage, which begins in downtown Cumberland and runs north toward Frostburg on a gentle rail-trail grade suitable for kids.

The area has four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and humid, winters are cold and snowy, and temperatures typically range from the mid 20s Fahrenheit in January to the mid 80s Fahrenheit in July. Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window for tent-style parks and the C&O Canal sites, while private parks with full hookups tend to run longer.
Water and services follow that pattern. At Spring Gap Campground, hand pump water is available April 15 to November 1, so shoulder-season campers should arrive with a full fresh tank. Stays are limited to 14 consecutive days between May 1 and October 1, and 30 total days per calendar year.
Fall brings the strongest scenery in the western Maryland mountains, and October weekends draw leaf-peepers to the railroad and the towpath, so reserving early is wise. Winter trips are possible at year-round private parks such as Eagle's Nest Campground, though snow and ice on secondary roads are common.
How to book a campsite
National Park Service sites use one system. Reservations are required to camp at Spring Gap Campground and other drive-in campgrounds within Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, and cash on arrival is not accepted. Reservations can be made online up to six months in advance at Recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777 with a credit or debit card.
Rig size matters at Spring Gap. The campground offers 12 single drive-in campsites and two drive-in group sites. Sites 1, 2, 8, 11 and 13 fit a single car, pickup, or van, while sites 3-7, 12, and 14 can accommodate a small RV, trailer, or pop-up 20 feet or shorter.
Private parks book direct. Eagle's Nest Campground, Hidden Springs Campground, Millesons Walnut Grove Campground, and Middle Ridge Campground each take reservations by phone or through their own websites, so call ahead for holiday weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Facilities vary sharply between public and private. At Spring Gap, expect a primitive experience: pit and portable toilets are available, and hand pump water is available April 15 to November 1. Trash service is not provided, so campers must pack out all waste. Quiet hours run 10 PM to 6 AM, and fires are permitted only in established rings. Visitors should also expect train and road noise from nearby rail lines and highways.
Private parks sit at the opposite end of the spectrum. Eagle's Nest Campground has three rows of sites totaling 80, and each site is equipped with a 30 or 50 amp electrical hookup, water, and on-site sewer. The park allows pets, has a dump station, and offers picnic tables, fire circles, grills, hot showers, and laundry facilities.
Cell signal is generally usable in Wiley Ford and Cumberland but drops in the river valleys and on wooded ridges south of town.
