Camping near Amery, Wisconsin
Amery sits in Polk County in northwestern Wisconsin, about an hour northeast of the Twin Cities and inside a lake-dotted stretch of the St. Croix River watershed. The town anchors a cluster of small private RV parks and state park sites, most within a 30 to 45 minute drive.
Close-in private options include Lakeview Park Inc. and Moon Lake Resort Campground, both oriented toward lake stays with hookup sites suited to trailers and motorhomes. Turtle Lake RV Park sits roughly 20 miles north along US-8 and offers hookup sites with 30 and 50 amp service. Big Rock Creek, near St. Croix Falls to the west, spans close to 1,000 acres with RV sites, glamping tents, a Geo Dome, and on-site trails.
For a state park base, South - Interstate State Park is the year-round campground at Wisconsin's oldest state park, on the St. Croix River gorge near St. Croix Falls.
Things to do around Amery
The Apple River runs through downtown Amery, giving campers easy access to paddling, tubing, and fishing without hauling far. The Cattail State Trail, part of Wisconsin's state trail network, passes through Amery and is used for hiking, biking, and ATV riding with a valid trail sticker.
Interstate State Park, roughly 25 miles west, is the standout day trip. It sits on the Dalles of the St. Croix, a basalt gorge with glacial potholes and the western terminus of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. The Ice Age Interpretive Center covers the region's glacial history through films and exhibits.
Other nearby draws include the Balsam Branch and Balsam Chain of Lakes, several regional wineries, and canoe and kayak liveries in St. Croix Falls and Taylors Falls, Minnesota.

Amery has a humid continental climate with warm, wet summers and cold, snowy winters. Peak RV season runs May through mid-October, when private parks are fully open and lake activity is at its highest. July and August are the busiest weeks, and sites at popular parks near the St. Croix fill well in advance around summer holidays.
Spring arrives late. Overnight lows still dip below freezing into April, and many private campgrounds do not open until early May. Late spring and early summer bring the region's wettest weather, along with peak bloom and strong fishing on the Apple River and area lakes. September is a strong shoulder month, with warm days, cooler nights, and reduced weekend crowds.
Winter camping options are limited. The north unit at Interstate State Park closes at the end of October, while the south unit and group camp stay open year-round for cold-weather campers.
How to book a site
Wisconsin state park sites, including South - Interstate State Park, are reserved through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system online or by phone at 1-888-947-2757. Reservations open up to 11 months ahead of the arrival date, and a reservation is required before setting up on any site. A Wisconsin state park vehicle admission sticker is also required.
Private campgrounds near Amery are booked directly. Lakeview Park Inc., Moon Lake Resort Campground, and Turtle Lake RV Park take reservations by phone or through their websites, while Big Rock Creek uses an online booking system for RV sites, glamping tents, and cabins.
For summer weekends and holidays, book state park sites the day the 11-month window opens, and reserve private hookup sites at least four to eight weeks out.
What to expect on the ground
Most private RV parks around Amery offer full or partial hookups with 30 amp service and 50 amp available at some sites. Expect gravel pads, picnic tables, fire rings, and shared bathhouses. Cell coverage is generally reliable in and around town but can drop in wooded river valleys west toward the St. Croix.
State park campgrounds are more rustic. The south unit at Interstate State Park has no electric hookups, while the north unit offers electric sites and shower facilities during its May through October season. A dump station is located near the Ice Age Interpretive Center.
Roads into Amery are paved two-lane highways with easy access for larger rigs. Bugs peak from late May through July, so screens, repellent, and a canopy help. Firewood should be bought locally to comply with Wisconsin quarantine rules.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Amery, WI?
Great news for budget-minded travelers: an RV rental in Amery is one of the most affordable ways to enjoy Wisconsin's Indianhead Country. On RVezy you will typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $175 per night, campervans in the $150 to $250 range, and larger Class C motorhomes between $200 and $350 per night, with prices easing outside the June through August peak. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Amery%2C%20WisconsinDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Amery, Wisconsin?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Amery. Wisconsin does not require a Commercial Driver License (CDL) for recreational vehicles used for personal travel, which covers virtually every rig you will find on RVezy. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies approved drivers through the platform during booking, so there is no DMV trip required. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are set. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the paperwork wraps up so they can hit Highway 46 toward the Apple River.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy on every reservation (hosts do not set this themselves), including a grace period after booking where you can get your money back if plans change. The exact refund depends on how far out you cancel and whether something like a Wisconsin winter storm or other major disruption affects your trip. You will see the policy details during checkout and in your booking confirmation, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after the trip if life throws a curveball. Pro tip: book early for July Fourth and the Amery Fall Festival weekends, those dates sell out fast across Polk County.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Amery?

Many local hosts charge a small pet fee (typically $25 to $75) to cover extra cleaning. Once you are on the road, your pup will love the Stower Seven Lakes State Trail just outside town, the leashed dog areas at North Park along the Apple River, and pet-friendly sites at nearby Polk County campgrounds. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any breed or size preferences and ask about their favorite local dog-friendly swimming spots.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/petsinparksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Amery?
Yes, RV delivery in Amery is a popular option and a game-changer for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts will drive the rig directly to North Park RV Campground in downtown Amery, nearby Polk County campgrounds, or even your private cabin driveway, then level it, hook up water and 30/50-amp power, and walk you through every system. Just filter for Delivery on the search page and enter your campground address to see real delivery fees from local hosts. Pro tip: if you are nervous about towing a trailer down Highway 46 or backing into a wooded site, delivery is worth every penny so you can start your vacation with a cold drink, not a stress sweat.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Amery%2C%20WisconsinHow far can I drive on an Amery RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got plenty of room to roam. Most Amery hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and a growing number offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for a longer Wisconsin loop. From Amery you're about 60 miles (roughly 75 minutes) to Minneapolis-St. Paul, 90 miles to Duluth, 110 miles to Eau Claire, and just 25 miles to St. Croix Falls and Interstate State Park. Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each if you go over. Pro tip: map your full RV road trip from Amery before booking and message the host with the total, many will bundle extra miles into a flat add-on so you can wander the St. Croix Valley without watching the odometer.
fhwa.dot.gov/planning/national_highway_system/Where are the best campgrounds near Amery for my RV?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Amery include North Park RV Campground right in town along the Apple River (8 full hookup sites with 50-amp service, fire rings, and free Wi-Fi for $35/night), Port Vahalla Campground on Pike Lake (water, electric, showers, and a boat launch), Apple River County Park with 15 quiet sites and 5 electric, and Straight Lake State Park about 25 minutes north for a rustic Ice Age Trail experience. For a bigger park feel, Interstate State Park in St. Croix Falls (Wisconsin's oldest) is just 30 minutes west. Pro tip: book Wisconsin DNR sites through wisconsin.goingtocamp.com up to 11 months out, summer weekends near the St. Croix sell quickly.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/campingWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Amery?
Late May through early October is prime time for RV camping in Amery, with the sweet spot being June through August when daytime highs sit comfortably between 73°F and 78°F and the Apple River is perfect for tubing. September is the local insider's pick: fall colors explode along the St. Croix Valley, mosquitoes vanish, campgrounds open up, and you can still swim in Pike Lake on warm afternoons. Winters get genuinely cold (January averages 5°F to 18°F), so most private campgrounds close from mid-October to early May, though some Wisconsin DNR parks now offer year-round reservations for hardy winter campers. Pro tip: aim for the week after Labor Day for the best mix of weather, price, and elbow room.
weather.gov/mpx/I'm a first-time renter, will I get help figuring out the RV?
You'll be in great hands. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, the generator, slide-outs, leveling, the freshwater and waste tanks, the awning, and how to hook up at the campground, so first time renting an RV in Amery feels manageable, not intimidating. You can also message your host with questions before booking and during the trip. Around Amery, the roads are flat and forgiving (Highway 46, Highway 8, and County Road F have wide shoulders and light traffic), making it an ideal place to find your RV legs before bigger adventures. Pro tip: record the walkthrough on your phone so you can replay the propane and dump-station steps at your campsite.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/safety.aspxWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Help is one phone call away. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing are covered no matter where you are, whether you are parked at North Park in Amery, halfway to Bayfield, or somewhere along Highway 8. Your host is also your first resource for quirks specific to their rig (the trick to the awning, the propane switch) and most respond within minutes. RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after the trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your contacts before pulling out of the driveway, cell service stays solid on most major Polk County routes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Amery?
Amery sits in a sweet spot for an RV road trip from Amery in any direction. Popular routes include heading 25 miles west to Interstate State Park and the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, 60 miles southwest to the Twin Cities and Minneapolis-St. Paul, 90 miles north to Duluth and Lake Superior's North Shore, 110 miles southeast to Eau Claire and the Chippewa Valley, and 180 miles northeast to Bayfield and the Apostle Islands. Crossing into Minnesota is no problem on an RVezy rental, but travel to Mexico is not permitted under the protection package. Pro tip: a 5-day loop of Amery, Interstate State Park, Duluth, and back through Hayward delivers waterfalls, big lake views, and great supper clubs without a single highway over 4 lanes.
nps.gov/sacn/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on an Amery RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second biggest line item after the rental, but it's predictable. Wisconsin gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and most rigs you'll book in Amery deliver real-world fuel economy of 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class C, 18 to 22 MPG for a campervan, and 10 to 14 MPG for a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. For a 300-mile weekend loop (say Amery to Bayfield and back), expect $90 to $150 in gas. Pro tip: top up in Amery or New Richmond before heading north, prices climb noticeably once you're past Spooner toward Lake Superior, and diesel pumps thin out on County roads.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground around Amery?
For peak summer weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day), book your Wisconsin DNR campsite 4 to 6 months ahead through wisconsin.goingtocamp.com or call 1-888-947-2757. The Wisconsin reservation window opens 11 months before your arrival date, so popular spots like Interstate State Park and Willow River State Park fill the moment they're released. Amery's North Park RV Campground is first-come, first-served and only has 8 sites, so arrive by Friday morning in summer. Port Vahalla and Apple River County Park usually have midweek availability into July. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) often open up Friday and Saturday extensions onsite, ask the camp host when you check in.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/camping/faqWhat are the driving conditions like around Amery?
You'll find Amery driving refreshingly low-stress. Highway 46, US Highway 8, and County Road F are flat, two-lane roads with wide shoulders, light traffic, and easy sight lines, ideal for first-time RVers. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk (Polk County has a healthy population), and keep an eye out for slow-moving farm equipment in spring and fall. Winter brings snow, ice, and the occasional blizzard from November through March, so most renters stick to May through October. The roads into downtown Amery are RV-friendly, but skip the tight alley behind Soo Line Park and use the Main Street public lot. Pro tip: avoid Highway 35 along the St. Croix at sunset on summer Sundays, traffic from the Twin Cities backs up heading south.
511wi.gov/What amenities will I find at Amery-area campgrounds?
Expect more than you might guess from a small town. Most campgrounds near Amery offer 30 and 50-amp electric, potable water spigots, fire rings, picnic tables, vault or flush toilets, and a dump station. North Park RV Campground has 8 full-hookup sites (water, sewer, 50-amp, free Wi-Fi) right along the Apple River. Port Vahalla on Pike Lake adds hot showers, flush toilets, and coin laundry, while Apple River County Park leans rustic with 5 electric-only sites and vault toilets. For dumping and filling water between stops, North Park is the most convenient public option in town (a small donation is appreciated). Pro tip: cell service is excellent in town but spottier at rustic county sites, download offline maps before you leave the city limits.
travelwisconsin.com/campgrounds/north-park-rv-campground-269577What features and amenities come standard in an Amery RV rental?
You'll be impressed by how loaded a typical motorhome rental in Amery is. Most rigs sleep 4 to 8 with real beds (queens, bunks, and convertible dinettes), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, propane furnace, and DOT seatbelts for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, awning, and a generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi hotspots and Starlink are increasingly common, just ask your host. Campervan rental Amery options pack the essentials into a smaller, easier-to-drive footprint. Pro tip: filter listings by Sleeps count and check the photo gallery; Amery hosts tend to over-photograph their rigs, so you'll know exactly what you're getting.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/license-drvs/how-to-apply/license-class.aspxWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Amery hosts make customizing easy. Common add-ons include linen and kitchen kits ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generators, propane fills, portable grills, and pet packages. Delivery and setup fees vary by distance, expect $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location, often waived for stays of 5+ nights to local campgrounds. Pickup is typically at the host's home (most are within 10 miles of downtown Amery), with a 30 to 60-minute orientation included. Mileage policies usually start at 100 free miles per night, and many hosts offer unlimited mileage upgrades for a flat fee. Pro tip: ask about a propane top-off add-on; refilling at Amery Hardware or Federated Co-op is cheap, but having a full tank at pickup means more s'mores, less errands.
travelwisconsin.com/article/road-trips/wisconsin-rv-campingHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay the full booking total through RVezy at checkout using a major credit card, and funds are held until your trip starts so the host is paid only after you have picked up the keys. A refundable security deposit (typically several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig) is pre-authorized on your card before the trip, not actually charged, and released after a smooth return. To avoid any hiccups, do a thorough walkthrough at pickup with the host, take date-stamped photos of the exterior and interior, and return the RV with the fuel and propane levels noted on your agreement. Pro tip: keep the host's number handy and message them through the RVezy app so everything is documented if you need it later.
