Campgrounds and RV parks near Atholville, NB

Sugarloaf Provincial Park is the main draw close to town. It has more than 25 km of hiking and biking trails, a summit trail with views over Campbellton and the Restigouche, and Atlantic Canada's first lift-service downhill mountain bike park. The Restigouche River is known for Atlantic salmon fishing and paddling, and the Terry Fox Trail winds around the base of the mountain. South of Atholville, Mount Carleton Provincial Park offers extensive hiking trails, canoeing on Nictau and Bathurst Lakes, and a designated Dark Sky Preserve for stargazing. Across the bridge, the Gaspé shoreline near Carleton-sur-Mer adds beach access, sea kayaking, and coastal cycling on Chaleur Bay.

The RV season in this part of northern New Brunswick is short. Sugarloaf Provincial Park's campground operates roughly from May through September, and Mount Carleton Provincial Park permits camping from May 15 through late September, though the park itself is open year-round outside a seasonal transition period. Private parks in the Restigouche corridor generally follow the same window. Summer, from late June through August, is peak season. Weekends at Sugarloaf and Armstrong Brook book out first, and hiking conditions are best from mid-June to early September. Blackflies are heaviest in late May and June, easing by mid-July. Early fall is a strong shoulder season: the northern hardwoods turn in late September, and hiking traffic stays high at Mount Carleton before the camping season ends. Winter brings heavy snow; the Sugarloaf ski hill and cross-country trails operate, and only unserviced winter camping is available.

Sugarloaf Provincial Park Campground is the most RV-friendly option in the immediate area, with a mix of full-service, electrical, and non-serviced sites, a dump station, showers, laundry, and a playground. Sites are wooded and moderate in size, suiting mid-size trailers and Class C motorhomes better than large fifth-wheels. Armstrong Brook at Mount Carleton is rustic: no electric or water hookups, generator use permitted, with washrooms, showers, a kitchen shelter, and a dump station. Cell coverage in the park is limited and the access road is remote, so arrive fuelled and provisioned. Expect black bears in both parks. Store food and garbage in the RV, keep pets leashed, and check fire-ban notices before lighting a campfire.
