The Matane Wildlife Reserve is the main draw, with moose and black bear observation activities, brook trout fishing in roughly 20 lakes, lake trout fishing in Lac Matane, and paddling on Étang à la Truite using rowboats, kayaks, pedal boats, or stand-up paddleboards. Over 100 km of hiking trails run through the reserve, including sections of the International Appalachian Trail and the Mont Blanc route. The town of Matane offers a salmon-viewing fishway, grocery and fuel stops, and ferry access across the St. Lawrence. South of the reserve, the Matapédia valley near Camping Causapscal chez Moose is known for Atlantic salmon rivers. Wild berry picking is also common in season inside the reserve.

The camping season here is short and concentrated in summer. Réserve faunique de Matane typically operates its campgrounds from late May through early September, with the Étang-à-la-Truite sector open during that window only and the John sector remaining accessible later into the fall for hunters. Private campgrounds in the Matane area follow a similar May to September pattern. July and August are peak months, with the warmest weather, longest days, and the strongest demand for serviced sites and ready-to-camp units. June brings cooler nights, fewer crowds, and active black-fly and mosquito populations in the reserve. From the first Tuesday in September into early November, big-game hunting season is in effect inside the reserve, and driving through the reserve is prohibited during that period, which closes off through routes for RVs. Outside the operating season, RV sites and most services are closed and interior roads are not maintained for trailers.

Expect a rural, forested setting with limited services once off Route 195. Inside the wildlife reserve, campsites near the registration centres include washroom facilities with showers, but there is no cell service across the reserve and Wi-Fi reaches only the registration centre buildings. The road to Étang-à-la-Truite is 42 km of gravel, so large rigs should plan for slow travel and check clearance. Rustic sites have dry toilets and no drinking water on site, while serviced sites sit near washroom facilities and water access. Bring bug protection in June and early July, expect cool nights even in midsummer, and stock groceries and fuel in Matane or Amqui before heading into the reserve.
