Camping near Alta, California
Alta is a small unincorporated community in Placer County, California, sitting at roughly 3,700 feet in the Sierra Nevada foothills about 30 miles northeast of Auburn along Interstate 80. The area lies inside the Tahoe National Forest and is anchored by historic Gold Rush towns including Dutch Flat, Gold Run, and Colfax, all within a short drive.
RV travelers use Alta as a base for the I-80 corridor between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. Private resorts and reservoir campgrounds dominate the nearby options. Dutch Flat RV Resort sits in the pines just east of Alta. River Rest Resort and Long Ravine Resort serve the Bear River and Rollins Lake areas to the west, while Scotts Flat Lake Resort is a larger reservoir campground near Nevada City, and Peninsula Camping and Boating Resort occupies a wooded stretch of Rollins Lake shoreline. Most foothill sites stay open year-round, while higher-elevation options are seasonal.
Things to do near Alta
Water recreation drives most trips. Rollins Lake supports swimming, waterskiing, kayaking, and fishing for rainbow and brown trout and largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass, with Long Ravine Resort and Peninsula Camping and Boating Resort offering direct lake access. Scotts Flat Lake holds trout and bass and supports boating, swimming, and sailing across about seven miles of shoreline.
The surrounding Tahoe National Forest has hiking and mountain-biking trails, swimming holes along the Bear and Yuba rivers, and gold-panning spots tied to the area's mining history. Dutch Flat, Gold Run, and Colfax preserve 19th-century main streets and museums. Day trips reach Donner Summit, Royal Gorge, and the north shore of Lake Tahoe within about an hour on I-80.

Summer is the prime season. June through August brings hot, dry, mostly clear weather, with daytime highs in the 80s Fahrenheit at Alta's elevation and warmer down at the Rollins Lake campgrounds near 2,100 feet. Reservoir campgrounds fill on weekends and around holidays, and reserving weeks ahead is standard at Scotts Flat Lake Resort, Long Ravine Resort, and Peninsula Camping and Boating Resort.
Spring brings wildflowers, full reservoirs from snowmelt, and cool nights. March is the wettest month in the foothills, so expect rain through April. Fall is dry, mild, and quieter, with warm days into October and cooler nights as elevation rises. Winter is cold and wet, with snow falling at higher campgrounds while Rollins Lake usually stays below the snow line. Fire restrictions and PSPS power shutoffs can affect campfires and services from late summer into fall.

How to book campgrounds near Alta
Reservation systems vary by operator. Scotts Flat Lake and the Rollins Lake campgrounds, including Long Ravine Resort and Peninsula Camping and Boating Resort, are operated under the Nevada Irrigation District by independent concessionaires. Bookings for the current year open on January 2 and are taken online or by phone, with a non-refundable reservation fee, an eight-person and one-vehicle limit on single sites, and no refunds within 14 days of arrival or for holiday bookings.
Dutch Flat RV Resort and River Rest Resort are independent private parks that take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Summer weekends, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill earliest. Confirm RV length limits before booking, since some sites at Scotts Flat Lake top out around 35 feet and many older sites are not perfectly level.
What to expect on-site
Sites in this area are wooded with ponderosa pine, cedar, and oak, on dirt, gravel, or paved pads. Hookup availability varies widely. Dutch Flat RV Resort offers full hookups and a camp store. Long Ravine Resort and Peninsula Camping and Boating Resort have a mix of RV and tent sites along Rollins Lake, with restrooms, showers, and on-site stores. Scotts Flat Lake Resort provides drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, laundry, a dump station, and a general store, but campsites there do not have hookups.
Cell coverage is spotty in the canyons. Bears are present, so food storage rules apply. Quiet hours run 10pm to 8am at NID campgrounds. Expect fire restrictions in summer, and bring water, leveling blocks, and insect repellent for evenings near the lakes.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Alta, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Alta, CA?
Good news: an RV rental in Alta, CA is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Sierra Nevada. On RVezy, travel trailers in the Alta and Placer County area typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run about $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs sit closer to $250 to $400 per night. Mid-week pickups and shoulder-season trips in late September or early October are the easiest way to score a cheap RV rental in Alta. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and look for hosts offering weekly discounts, since many Placer County owners drop their nightly rate 10 to 20 percent for trips of five nights or more.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Alta,CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Alta, California?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Alta, California. There is no Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement required for any motorhome or travel trailer you will find on RVezy, including Class A, Class C, and fifth wheels. You do need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during checkout, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are set. Most first-time renters are surprised by how quick the booking and verification process feels.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Alta?
Every RV rental in Alta, CA booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you drive away. The protection plan helps cover most accidental damage to the vehicle during your trip, which means a small mishap on a forest road near Emigrant Gap or a curb scrape in the Dutch Flat parking area will not derail your vacation. While booking, you can choose between several protection tiers depending on how much coverage and how low a deductible you want, and the choice is yours, not the host's. It is real peace of mind for a Sierra Nevada road trip where conditions can change quickly with elevation.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Alta RV rental?
Booking your Alta RV trip is straightforward: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (it is not chosen by individual hosts), and you will see the exact terms before you confirm payment. Refund eligibility depends on how far out from your trip you cancel, and RVezy support is available 24/7 if your plans shift. If a host ever cancels your booking, you receive a full refund or RVezy travel credits with no penalty to you, so wildfires, winter storms over Donner Pass, or other Sierra Nevada surprises will not leave you stranded. Translation: you can grab that perfect motorhome rental Alta listing today with full clarity on what happens if life gets in the way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Alta?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Alta is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see plenty of Placer County hosts who welcome dogs, often with a small cleaning fee. Once you are on the road, your pup will love this corner of California: the Stevens Trail in nearby Colfax allows leashed dogs and follows the North Fork American River canyon, and Tahoe National Forest's dispersed camping areas around Yuba Gap are dog-friendly year-round. Even Dutch Flat RV Resort, just minutes from Alta off Interstate 80, allows pets at most sites. Pro tip: pack a long lead so your dog can lounge outside while you set up camp.
fs.usda.gov/tahoeCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Alta?
Yes, RV delivery in Alta is one of the most popular booking options, especially for first-timers who would rather not drive a 30-foot rig up Interstate 80. Many RVezy hosts in Placer County will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer directly at Dutch Flat RV Resort or a Tahoe National Forest campground, then walk you through the systems before they leave. Just use the Delivery filter when you search, or message a host to confirm the fee, which is usually based on round-trip mileage from their home base. Show up, unlock the door, and start your campervan rental Alta adventure with zero driving stress.
rvezy.com/rv-rentals/destination/united-states/californiaHow far can I drive on an Alta RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have plenty of range from Alta. Most RVezy hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and many offer add-on packages or even an RV rental with unlimited mileage if you ask before booking. That is more than enough for the classic loops out of Alta: Lake Tahoe's north shore is roughly 45 miles east on Interstate 80, Reno is about 75 miles east, Lassen Volcanic National Park is around 175 miles north, and a Pacific Coast run to Mendocino is about 200 miles west. Pro tip: if you are planning a big RV road trip from Alta, message the host with your route so they can quote a flat mileage upgrade upfront.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhere should I camp near Alta, CA?
You are in one of the best basecamps in the Sierra. The best campgrounds near Alta include Dutch Flat RV Resort (a wooded 80-acre property with full hookups just off Interstate 80 at exit 145), Bear River Campground on Rollins Lake about 20 minutes south, and the U.S. Forest Service's Lodgepole and Woodcamp campgrounds at Jackson Meadows Reservoir for a more remote feel. For a Tahoe-side trip, Sugar Pine Point State Park on the west shore is about an hour east. Pro tip: book Forest Service sites on Recreation.gov up to six months ahead for July and August, since Sierra weekends sell out fast.
recreation.gov/What is the best time of year for an RV trip in Alta?
Late June through early October is prime time for RV camping in Alta, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 75 to 85 degree Fahrenheit range and nights cool to the 45 to 55 degree range, perfect for campfires at roughly 3,600 feet of elevation. July and August are the warmest and busiest, while September brings golden light, fewer crowds, and surprisingly warm afternoons. Spring and late fall are quieter and beautiful, but expect cool nights and possible snow at higher passes. Winter turns Alta into a snowy wonderland with deep Sierra powder, ideal for renters chasing a ski-trip basecamp. Pro tip: shoulder-season trips in late September often unlock cheaper nightly rates and wide-open campground availability.
weather.gov/sto/I have never driven an RV. Will I be okay starting from Alta?
You will do great, even if it is your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, slide-outs, leveling, and dumping, and you can text them anytime during your trip with questions. Alta itself is an easy launch point: Interstate 80 is wide, well-maintained, and runs straight through town, so you can practice on flat highway before tackling anything twisty. If mountain driving feels intimidating, choose a Class B campervan or a 21 to 25 foot Class C, both of which handle Sierra grades comfortably. Pro tip: do your first fuel stop at the Gold Run or Colfax exits where the pumps are RV-friendly with pull-through access.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 20, a dead battery at a Tahoe National Forest site, or a lockout at Dutch Flat RV Resort is a single phone call away from help. Your host is also a direct text away for quick questions about quirks specific to their rig, and RVezy's support team is reachable around the clock before, during, and after your trip. Translation: you can focus on enjoying your Alta RV trip knowing the safety net is built in, not an upsell.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Alta RV rental into Nevada or other states?
Yes, cross-state travel is one of the best parts of renting an RV in Alta. Nevada is just 75 miles east on Interstate 80, putting Reno, Virginia City, and Pyramid Lake all within easy reach, and Oregon is a doable two-day drive north. RVezy protection coverage extends across the United States and Canada, but travel into Mexico is not permitted because the protection plan and roadside assistance do not extend south of the border. If you are planning to cross into Canada, message your host first to confirm. Popular routes from Alta include the Tahoe loop via Highway 89 and the eastern Sierra run down Highway 395 to Mammoth Lakes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I expect?
Plan smart and your fuel budget will not surprise you. A Class B campervan rental Alta gets roughly 18 to 22 miles per gallon, a Class C motorhome around 8 to 12 mpg, and a large Class A about 6 to 9 mpg. California gas typically runs higher than the national average, and the Alta and Colfax stations on Interstate 80 are usually a few cents cheaper than Tahoe-area pumps, so top off before you climb. For a four-day, 400-mile loop in a Class C, expect roughly $200 to $275 in fuel. Pro tip: the Pilot Travel Center in Truckee has high-flow diesel and easy RV access if you are heading toward Lake Tahoe.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far ahead should I book a campground near Alta?
Book early and you will land the prime spots. Most U.S. Forest Service campgrounds in Tahoe National Forest, including the popular sites along the Yuba River and at Jackson Meadows, open reservations on Recreation.gov exactly six months in advance, and summer weekends often fill within hours of release. California State Parks like Donner Memorial, just 30 minutes east of Alta, also use a six-month rolling window through ReserveCalifornia. Private parks like Dutch Flat RV Resort take direct reservations and often have last-minute openings mid-week. Pro tip: if you strike out on a Saturday, book Sunday through Thursday and you will usually walk into a quieter campground with better site choice.
recreation.gov/What are the local driving conditions like around Alta?
Driving an RV around Alta is mostly straightforward, with one thing to respect: elevation. Alta sits at about 3,600 feet on Interstate 80, and the highway climbs steadily to Donner Summit at 7,239 feet about 30 miles east, so use a lower gear on descents and watch your engine temperature on hot afternoon climbs. From November through April, Caltrans frequently requires chains or four-wheel drive over Donner Pass, and chain checks are enforced at marked turnouts. Local roads like Highway 174 to Grass Valley and Highway 20 toward Nevada City are scenic but narrow, so take them at a relaxed pace. Pro tip: check QuickMap from Caltrans before you roll for real-time chain controls and closures.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/Should I plan a winter RV trip from Alta?
Winter in Alta is genuinely magical, and yes, you can absolutely make it work with the right rig. Many RVezy hosts in Placer County offer four-season motorhomes with heated holding tanks, propane furnaces, and 30-amp shore power capability, which is exactly what you need at 3,600 feet of elevation where snowfall can be heavy in mid-winter. Dutch Flat RV Resort stays open year-round with full hookups, making it a popular winter basecamp for skiers heading to Sugar Bowl or Boreal Mountain Resort, both about 25 to 30 miles east near Donner Summit. Pro tip: filter for hosts who mention winterized or heated underbelly in the listing and confirm chain compatibility before booking your RV rental California winter trip.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Alta?
You will find a healthy mix of options depending on your style. Private parks like Dutch Flat RV Resort and Auburn Gold Country RV Park offer full hookups (water, 30 or 50 amp electric, and sewer), hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. U.S. Forest Service campgrounds in Tahoe National Forest, such as Lodgepole at Jackson Meadows or North Fork on the American River, typically have potable water, vault toilets, and fire rings but no hookups, which is fine if your RV has a generator and full tanks. Need to dump or refill? The Flying J in Roseville and the Truckee dump station off Interstate 80 are both within an hour of Alta. Pro tip: top off fresh water before heading into national forest sites, since many shut off taps after October.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/tahoe/recreation/camping-cabinsWhat features and amenities come with the RV itself?
More than you might expect. RVs on RVezy in the Alta area typically come with a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware), a private bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable beds for the listed sleep count, dinette seating with seatbelts for travel, propane heat, air conditioning, and a house battery for off-grid use. Many family RV trip Alta listings also include a TV, outdoor awning, and onboard generator. Wi-Fi is hit or miss in the Sierra, so plan to use your phone hotspot. Each listing page shows exactly what is included, plus sleep count, seatbelt count, and fresh-water tank size, so you can match the rig to your crew with confidence.
rvezy.com/rv-rentals/destination/united-states/californiaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for Alta RV rentals?
Hosts in the Alta and Placer County area offer plenty of ways to make your trip easier. Common add-ons include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, camping chairs and outdoor mats, generator usage, propane refills, bike racks, and pet packages. For pickup, most hosts meet you at their home base in towns like Auburn, Colfax, or Roseville, while many also offer RV delivery Alta service to your campground or rental cabin for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary by listing, with most including 100 to 150 free miles per night and overage rates around $0.35 to $0.50 per mile. Pro tip: bundling delivery, linens, and a generator package up front almost always costs less than adding them later.
rvezy.com/rv-rentals/destination/united-states/californiaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Alta, you pay through RVezy's protected checkout using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps everything tracked and refundable per the cancellation policy. A refundable security deposit, typically a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars depending on the rig, is authorized on your card before pickup and released back to you after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back clean, on time, and in the same condition. To avoid issues, take date-stamped walk-around photos and a short video at pickup and drop-off, return with the fuel and propane levels noted in the listing, and dump the tanks if required. Easy in, easy out.
