Hiking is concentrated in two parks: Morro Bay State Park has trails on Black Hill and Cerro Cabrillo with panoramic bay views, and Montana De Oro State Park covers thousands of acres of bluffs, coves, and canyons, including the Bluff Trail above Spooner's Cove and the climb up Valencia Peak. Bird watching is strong year-round, with shorebirds, herons, egrets, and raptors common in the marshes. Monarch butterflies overwinter locally between late fall and early spring. The Morro Bay Museum of Natural History sits next to the state park campground, and the Morro Bay Golf Course is adjacent to it.

Summer is the busiest stretch. Coastal fog is common in the mornings and often burns off by mid-day, so daytime highs stay mild even in July and August. Early fall is often the warmest, clearest part of the year, with fewer crowds and good ocean conditions. September is among the driest months, with very little measurable rain. Winter brings the bulk of the rainfall, concentrated between December and February, but temperatures stay mild and the parks remain open. Whale watching, sea otter sightings, and monarch butterfly viewing peak in this window. Spring is wildflower season in Montana De Oro State Park, where the hills turn gold and green, and bird-watching activity stays high from February through June. Wind can be strong on the coast year-round, so awnings should be secured.

Expect cool, breezy, often foggy mornings, even in summer. Layers and a windbreaker are useful at every site close to the water. At Morro Bay State Park, sites sit under tall eucalyptus trees with intermittent shade; the layout is compact and neighbors are close. A block of sites offers water and electric hookups, and a dump station is on site. Islay Creek Campground in Montana De Oro State Park is dry camping with potable water and vault toilets, no hookups, and little to no cell service in the park. Showers are not available at Islay Creek, but coin-operated showers can be used at Morro Bay State Park Campground. Pecho Valley Road into Montana De Oro is narrow and winding, so larger trailers should drive it slowly. Dogs are allowed on leash in campgrounds and on Spooner's Cove Beach, but not on most park trails.
