Camping near Boonville, California
Boonville sits in Anderson Valley along Highway 128 in Mendocino County, roughly a three-hour drive north of San Francisco. The town is a practical base for RV travelers visiting the redwood coast, the Navarro River corridor, and the Anderson Valley wine region. Old-growth redwoods, river swimming holes, and tasting rooms are all within a short drive.
The closest developed campground is Hendy Woods State Park, with 92 campsites and four cabins under coast redwoods, eight miles northwest of Boonville off Highway 128. RV travelers needing full hookups often stay at Redwood Empire Fair RV Park in Ukiah, about 30 miles east on Highway 253. For coastal trips, Gualala River Redwood Park and Anchor Bay Campgrounds sit roughly an hour west on the Mendocino-Sonoma coast. Orr Hot Springs Resort, between Ukiah and Mendocino, adds a soaking-and-camping option for adults. Cell service is limited in the valley and absent at some properties, so download maps before arriving.
Things to do near Boonville
Hendy Woods has about 5 miles of trails, mostly easy or moderate, all within easy walking distance from the campgrounds, and the All-Access Trail near the parking area is wheelchair accessible, with river access for swimming in summer. Located in the middle of the Anderson Valley wine district, the 850-acre park is warmer and less foggy than redwood parks along the coast, which makes it a comfortable family base. Anderson Valley itself is known for Pinot Noir, with tasting rooms along Highway 128 in Philo and Boonville. From Gualala River Redwood Park and Anchor Bay Campgrounds, travelers reach Pacific tidepools, beaches, and whale-watching points within minutes. Orr Hot Springs Resort offers mineral soaking tubs, a spring-fed pool, sauna, and steam room. The Mendocino County Fairgrounds in Boonville hosts seasonal festivals including a spring beer event, summer music, and a fall apple festival.

Anderson Valley follows a warm-summer Mediterranean pattern: warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Peak camping runs from late spring through early fall, when the Navarro River drops to swimming level and inland temperatures climb into the 80s. May through September reservations at Hendy Woods are made through ReserveCalifornia; at other times campsites can usually be secured at the park on arrival.
Coastal campgrounds operate on different calendars. Gualala River Redwood Park is open seasonally from May through October, because the lower river floods in winter. Anchor Bay Campgrounds operates year-round but fills on summer weekends and holidays. Redwood Empire Fair RV Park and Orr Hot Springs Resort are open all year. Winter brings heavy rain and occasional road closures on Highway 128. Spring offers wildflowers and high river flows; fall brings wine harvest and clear, mild days.
How to book campgrounds near Boonville
Hendy Woods reservations can be made up to six months in advance through ReserveCalifornia. The Azalea Loop Campground can be reserved while the Wildcat camping area is non-reservable and operates first-come, first-served. Gualala River Redwood Park reservations may be made up to one year to the day in advance, with payment in full at the time of booking and cancellations made on day of arrival forfeiting all monies paid. Anchor Bay Campground takes phone reservations up to 12 months in advance, with a two-night minimum on weekends and a three-night minimum on holiday weekends. Orr Hot Springs Resort requires reservations for both day use and overnight stays. Redwood Empire Fair RV Park accepts advance reservations directly through the park.
What to expect on the ground
Hookups are not available at Hendy Woods State Park; the campground has a visitor center, drinking water, flush toilets, showers and an RV dump station. Sites suit RVs up to 35 feet, and interior roads can be tight for larger rigs. Redwood Empire Fair RV Park is the closest full-hookup option on a fairgrounds property, so expect event noise on some weekends. Gualala River Redwood Park offers around 120 sites with water and electric and large spacing between sites; bring extra water hose and electrical cord because hookups are spaced apart. Anchor Bay is a small, six-acre privately-owned campground on Highway One that opens into a half-mile-long beach, with hot showers and a dump station. Orr Hot Springs is clothing-optional, has limited cell service, and is well off the highway.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Boonville, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Boonville, CA?
An RV rental in Boonville is more affordable than you might expect, especially when you split the cost with friends or family. On RVezy, travel trailers in the Anderson Valley typically start around $95 to $160 per night, while Class C motorhomes run roughly $180 to $310 per night, and luxury Class A rigs can reach $400 and up. Midweek bookings in shoulder seasons (March to early June, or October) are the smart-money move since wine country weekends and Mendocino County Fair time push prices higher. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and set a price range to surface cheap RV rental Boonville options fast, and message hosts directly to ask about weekly discounts for longer Anderson Valley stays.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Boonville%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Boonville?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Boonville. California does not require a special license or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal RVs under 40 feet, which covers nearly every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during booking, so there's nothing to fax or mail. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association, usually under $25. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the paperwork is on a Boonville RV trip.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-06/Is the RV covered if something happens during my Anderson Valley trip?
Yes, every RV rental in Boonville booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 128 with confidence. The protection plan helps cover damages to the vehicle and is not traditional auto insurance, but it gives renters real financial peace of mind. During checkout you choose your coverage level, not the host, so you can pick what fits your comfort zone, whether you're heading to Hendy Woods for one night or doing a full week through wine country and the Mendocino coast. Pro tip: if you're new to RVing, the higher-tier protection is usually worth the extra few dollars per night for added peace of mind on your Anderson Valley trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Boonville RV booking?
Plans change, and RVezy makes that easy to handle. RVezy sets the cancellation policy platform-wide (not the host), and there's a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. After that, your refund amount depends on how close you are to your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so your plans aren't derailed. Pro tip: book your Anderson Valley wine country dates as early as you're confident, then use the grace window if anything shifts, especially around the Mendocino County Fair in September.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Boonville RV rental?
Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Boonville options are ready for your four-legged co-pilot. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see motorhomes and travel trailers whose hosts welcome dogs. Boonville and the Anderson Valley are wonderfully dog-friendly: leashed pups are welcome at Hendy Woods State Park campgrounds and paved areas, on Navarro River sandbars in summer, and on many winery patios in Philo. Manchester Beach KOA, about 30 miles west on Highway 1, has nearby beach access for dogs on leash. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and bring a portable water bowl, since inland summer afternoons regularly hit the mid-80s.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=438Can the RV be delivered to my campsite or vacation rental near Boonville?
Yes, RV delivery Boonville is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially for first-time renters. Many RVezy hosts in Mendocino and Sonoma counties will drive the rig to Hendy Woods State Park, Indian Creek County Park, the Mendocino County Fairgrounds RV Park, or even a private vineyard property, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. That means no towing, no backing into tight redwood sites, and no stress on Highway 128's curves. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy to find these hosts. Pro tip: delivery is gold for groups flying into SFO or OAK who want to skip the city driving entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Boonville%2C%20CaliforniaHow many miles can I drive on a Boonville RV rental?
You'll have plenty of room to roam. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, and many Boonville-area listings offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some advertising RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for road trippers. Extra miles typically run $0.35 to $0.50 each. To put it in perspective from Boonville: Mendocino village is 28 miles, Fort Bragg is 55 miles, the Avenue of the Giants is about 110 miles north, and San Francisco is 115 miles south. Pro tip: map your route before booking and message the host to confirm the mileage allowance, especially if you're planning a wider Northern California RV road trip from Boonville.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/route-infoWhere are the best campgrounds near Boonville for RVs?
You've got terrific options for RV camping Boonville within a short drive. Hendy Woods State Park (5 miles west on Philo-Greenwood Road) offers 92 sites tucked under old-growth redwoods, perfect for tents and smaller RVs (no hookups). The Mendocino County Fairgrounds RV Park right in Boonville on Highway 128 has full-hookup gravel sites and easy access. Indian Creek Campground near Philo offers shaded creekside sites for rigs up to 30 feet. For coastal flavor, Manchester Beach / Mendocino Coast KOA (about 30 miles west) has full hookups and beach access. Pro tip: Hendy Woods books fast for summer weekends, so reserve through ReserveCalifornia up to six months ahead.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=438When is the best time of year to visit Boonville in an RV?
The sweet spot for a Boonville RV trip is mid-March through June and again in September and October. Spring brings wildflowers, green hillsides, and highs in the 60s to mid-70s, while fall delivers the grape harvest, golden vineyards, and warm 75 to 85 degree days. July and August are dry and hot, often hitting the high 80s to low 90s in the valley, but cool quickly at night, perfect for RV air conditioning during the day and open windows after sunset. Winters are mild but wet, with highs near 55 and the Navarro River occasionally rising. Pro tip: time your trip with the Boonville Beer Festival in May or the Mendocino County Fair in mid-September.
weather.gov/eka/I've never driven an RV. Is Boonville a good place to start?
Boonville is actually a friendly first-time renting an RV experience, especially if you choose the right rig. Highway 128 winds through Anderson Valley with gentle curves and light traffic outside of summer weekends, and back roads to wineries are paved and well-marked. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering everything from leveling and propane to dumping tanks, so you won't be guessing in the campground. A Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer is ideal for these roads. Pro tip: book a host that offers delivery to Hendy Woods or the Boonville fairgrounds, then you'll only drive day trips with an empty parking spot waiting when you return.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/route-infoWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 128 or a battery hiccup at Hendy Woods is a quick phone call away. RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip, and your host is also reachable through in-app messaging for quick questions like resetting a GFCI breaker or relighting the water heater. Cell coverage can be spotty in the redwoods, so save the roadside number in your phone before leaving Boonville. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround each morning, checking tires and slide-outs, to catch small issues before they become big ones.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take the RV from Boonville on a road trip across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, multi-state and even cross-border trips are popular when you rent an RV in Boonville. Many RVezy hosts allow travel throughout California, Oregon, Nevada, and beyond, and some permit travel into Canada, which is great for renters dreaming of Crater Lake, the Oregon Coast, or even Vancouver Island. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage limits. Always message the host before booking to confirm your route, especially for longer hauls. Pro tip: classic RV road trip from Boonville routes include Highway 1 north to Mendocino and the Lost Coast, Highway 101 to Redwood National Park (4 hours), and east to Lake Tahoe (5 hours).
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/route-infoHow much should I budget for fuel on a Boonville RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget than most people think. Class B campervans and small travel trailers in the Boonville area average 14 to 20 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get roughly 8 to 12 mpg, and larger Class A rigs land near 7 to 10 mpg. California gas prices tend to run higher than the national average, often $4.75 to $5.50 per gallon in Mendocino County, so fill up in Ukiah (25 miles east) or Cloverdale (35 miles south) where stations are cheaper than the single Boonville pump. Pro tip: a weekend out-and-back from the Bay Area in a Class C usually runs $120 to $180 in fuel, which splits nicely across a family or group of friends.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Boonville?
Earlier is better, but you have flexibility. California State Parks like Hendy Woods open reservations through ReserveCalifornia exactly six months in advance to the day, and summer weekends from June through September often sell out within minutes of release. Manchester Beach KOA and the Mendocino County Fairgrounds RV Park typically have availability 2 to 6 weeks out, even in peak season. For shoulder-season trips in April, May, or October, you can usually score sites 1 to 2 weeks ahead. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the six-month mark if you want a coveted redwood site at Hendy Woods, and have a backup site like Paul M. Dimmick Campground ready as plan B.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the roads around Boonville like for driving an RV?
Boonville's roads are scenic and very RV-friendly with a little planning. Highway 128 is the main artery, a two-lane road with gentle curves through vineyards and redwoods, easy in any Class C or travel trailer. The 35-mile stretch from Cloverdale (Highway 101) to Boonville has a few tight bends, so drive it in daylight your first time. Heading west to the coast, the final descent down Highway 128 to Highway 1 has steep grades and sharp turns; smaller rigs handle it best. Avoid narrow Mountain View Road in big motorhomes. Pro tip: summer fog often rolls inland in the afternoon, so plan coast trips for the morning when visibility is highest.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Boonville?
Anderson Valley campgrounds range from rustic redwood gems to full-service RV parks, so you can pick your comfort level. Hendy Woods State Park has flush toilets, hot showers (quarter-operated), potable water spigots, and a dump station ($8 fee), but no hookups. The Mendocino County Fairgrounds RV Park in Boonville offers full electric, water, and sewer hookups with a shower/restroom building. Manchester Beach KOA delivers the works: full hookups, laundry, Wi-Fi, and propane refills. Indian Creek Campground is more primitive with vault toilets and creek access. Pro tip: top up your fresh water tank in Boonville before heading deeper into the redwoods, and plan a dump-station stop on your way home through Ukiah.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=438What's actually inside the RVs available in Boonville?
You'll be impressed by how well-equipped most rigs are for a Boonville RV trip. Typical RVezy motorhome rental Boonville listings include a real bed (queen or king), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control via roof AC and propane furnace, dinette seating with seatbelts for travel, and house batteries for off-grid use. Many hosts include a generator for boondocking at wineries, plus outdoor speakers, awnings, camp chairs, and even Starlink or Wi-Fi hotspots, useful since Anderson Valley cell coverage is patchy. Pro tip: scroll a listing's amenities list before booking and message the host if you specifically need things like a TV, kid car seats, or extra bedding.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-06/What add-ons and extras can I get with my Boonville RV rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize your campervan rental Boonville or motorhome stay. Common RVezy add-ons in the Anderson Valley include linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, bikes or e-bikes ($25 to $50/day), camp chairs and tables, propane fire pits (great for Hendy Woods where wood fires sometimes face seasonal bans), portable generators, and even unlimited mileage upgrades. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Boonville, Philo, or nearby Ukiah, with delivery available for an extra fee based on distance. Standard checkout is mid-morning with return by late afternoon. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen package for a true family RV trip Boonville with zero packing stress.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=438How does the security deposit and payment work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Anderson Valley, you pay through RVezy's platform using a credit or debit card, never in cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card shortly before pickup and released after your trip if there's no damage and the RV comes back clean with the tanks handled per the host's instructions. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, including the odometer, generator hours, and tank levels. Pro tip: keep your fuel and propane receipts; they're handy if a host policy requires returning with full tanks.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Boonville?
Boonville is a perfect launch pad for a Northern California RV road trip. Top routes include: Mendocino village and Russian Gulch State Park (28 miles, about 50 minutes via Highway 128) for dramatic coastal bluffs; Fort Bragg and the Skunk Train (55 miles, 1.25 hours) for beach camping at MacKerricher State Park; the Avenue of the Giants and Humboldt Redwoods (110 miles, 2.5 hours north) for the world's tallest trees; Healdsburg and Sonoma wine country (45 miles south, 1 hour) for more tasting rooms; and Clear Lake (60 miles east, 1.5 hours) for warm-water swimming and fishing. Pro tip: loop Boonville to Mendocino to Fort Bragg to Highway 101 south for an unforgettable 4-day Anderson Valley coastal circle.
