Campgrounds and RV parks near Carmel Valley Village, CA

Day trips from a Carmel Valley Village base cover a wide range of terrain. The Monterey Peninsula is a short drive west for the aquarium, Cannery Row, and the 17-Mile Drive. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, just south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, offers tide pools, sea otter viewing, and cliff trails. Carmel Valley Road runs east through wineries and tasting rooms in the village itself. For hiking and redwoods, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is the regional hub, with 189 campsites situated on or near the Big Sur River. The park runs evening programs at a Campfire Center during peak season and offers interpretive walks year round on weekends. Pfeiffer Beach, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, and Bixby Bridge are all reachable on the same Highway 1 corridor, though some park trails remain closed due to fire and flood damage.

Carmel Valley Village has a Mediterranean climate: warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. NOAA-based climate normals show Carmel Valley is noticeably warmer by day than Monterey's coast, with average highs around 77°F in June and 81°F in September at the Carmel Valley station, compared with about 68°F and 72°F at Monterey Peninsula Airport. That inland warmth makes late spring and early fall the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Summer is the busiest stretch. Coastal sites between Carmel and Big Sur fill months ahead, and the marine layer often parks fog over the coast in the mornings before clearing inland by midday. NOAA's Coast Pilot for Monterey Bay notes sea fog is a problem from about July through September, with visibility dropping below half a mile on 4 to 8 days per month during the heaviest fog period. Winter brings the wet season and intermittent Highway 1 disruptions. Storms can trigger temporary closures along Highway 1 south of Big Sur while crews remove debris from slides. Travelers heading south of Big Sur should check Caltrans QuickMap before departure.

Site infrastructure varies sharply between private parks and state campgrounds. Private parks along the Carmel and Big Sur rivers generally provide full hookups, dump stations, and Wi-Fi. State campgrounds do not. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park has no hookups at any site, but provides potable water, a dump station, hot showers, and flush toilets throughout the campground. RV length matters on this coast. At Pfeiffer Big Sur, maximum trailer length is 27 feet and motorhome length is 32 feet, with a 12-foot height limit due to overhanging trees. Highway 1 south of Carmel is narrow and winding, with tight turns and limited pullouts, so larger rigs are easier to park at Carmel Valley or Marina Dunes and explore the coast by car. Cell service drops off quickly south of the village.
