Campgrounds and RV parks near Cedar Flat, CA

The north and west shores of Lake Tahoe are built for water and trail days. Families paddle, swim, and fish from beaches at Tahoe State Recreation Area and along the Sugar Pine Point lakefront, which has nearly two miles of frontage and the historic Hellman-Ehrman Mansion. A paved bike path links Tahoe City with Olympic Valley and follows the Truckee River, and rafting trips launch from Tahoe City in summer. At Donner Memorial State Park, the visitor center interprets the Donner Party story of 1846 and 1847, and lakeside trails ring Donner Lake. The Pacific Crest Trail crosses Coldstream Canyon south of the park. In winter, Sugar Pine Point grooms cross-country ski trails and Palisades Tahoe and Northstar are within short drives.

The Tahoe basin has a continental mountain climate with cold, snowy winters and warm, dry summers. Snow falls mainly from November through March, and the western basin can collect heavy seasonal totals at elevation. Most public campgrounds run a short season tied to snowmelt: Tahoe State Recreation Area typically operates late May through mid-September, and Donner Memorial opens its loops on a staggered schedule, with Ridge coming online in late May, Splitrock at the end of May, and Creek in early June. Sugar Pine Point is the exception. Its General Creek Campground keeps one loop open year-round on a first-come basis for snow camping, though showers and the dump station close in winter. Summer weekends fill quickly across the basin. Fall brings cooler nights, thinning crowds, and better shoulder-season availability before snow returns. Bears are active spring through fall, and food storage in metal lockers is required by law inside the state parks.

Elevations across these campgrounds run from roughly 5,900 to 6,400 feet, so nights are cool even in midsummer. Campers regularly see low 40s Fahrenheit after dark in July and August. State park sites do not have hookups, but Sugar Pine Point and Donner Memorial both have dump stations and seasonal hot showers, and Tahoe State Recreation Area also offers flush toilets and showers in season. Coachland RV Resort and Truckee River RV Park provide full hookups with 30 and 50-amp service, pull-through sites for big rigs, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Cell coverage is reliable near Tahoe City and Truckee but can be spotty inside Donner Memorial. Bear-resistant food lockers are mandatory at the state parks, generators are restricted during quiet hours, and pets must be leashed. Roads in are paved but winding; trailers should follow posted truck routes rather than GPS shortcuts.
