Campgrounds and RV parks near Del Monte Forest, CA

The signature drive is 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach, passing the Lone Cypress and Spanish Bay. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, just south of Carmel, has short coastal trails, tidepools, and reliable sea otter and harbor seal viewing. Monterey Bay Aquarium on Cannery Row is the area's main family destination, with sea otters, jellies, and the kelp forest tank. Cyclists and walkers use the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail between Pacific Grove and Castroville. North across the bay, Elkhorn Slough near Moss Landing offers kayak and pontoon tours through one of California's largest salt marshes. Carmel Beach, Asilomar State Beach, and Lovers Point are easy stops for tidepooling and sunset walks. Whale-watching boats run from Fisherman's Wharf year-round, with humpbacks common in summer and gray whales passing in winter and spring.

The Monterey Peninsula has a cool Mediterranean coastal climate with mild temperatures year-round and very little summer rain. Summer brings the heaviest visitation but also the famous marine layer: mornings are often gray and foggy along the immediate coast, burning off by midday. Inland campgrounds near Salinas and Carmel Valley typically see more sun and warmer afternoons than sites on the bay. September and October are the warmest, clearest months on the peninsula and are widely considered the best window for RV travel, with smaller crowds after Labor Day. Spring is cool and breezy, with wildflowers and migrating gray whales offshore. Winter is the wet season, with most rain falling between December and March; storms can bring strong wind and surf, and the Carmel River area has historically seen flood closures during heavy years. At Sunset State Beach, the South Camp loop is open all year while the Dunes and Pine Hollow loops close from October through mid-March, though most private RV parks operate year-round.

Expect cool, damp mornings even in summer. Pack layers, a windbreaker, and a warm sleeping setup; overnight lows drop into the 40s Fahrenheit much of the year. Coastal sites are often shaded by Monterey pines and cypress, which cuts solar charging on rigs that rely on rooftop panels. Roads through Del Monte Forest itself are narrow and residential, and 17-Mile Drive charges a per-vehicle gate fee while passing through tight curves and low-hanging branches that make it awkward for larger motorhomes, so day-tripping in a tow vehicle is generally easier. Cell coverage is solid across the peninsula and weaker in pockets of Big Sur to the south. Wildlife is active: deer wander through Pebble Beach, raccoons work campgrounds at night, and food lockers should be used where provided. Dogs are welcome at most private parks but restricted on much of the state-beach shoreline due to snowy plover nesting.
