Campgrounds and RV parks near Del Rey Oaks, CA

The Monterey Peninsula is the main draw. Within a short drive, visitors reach the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf, the 17-Mile Drive around Pebble Beach, and the shops and galleries of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Whale watching, kayaking, and tide-pooling are common on-water activities, and the paved Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail runs along the shoreline for cycling and walking. Inland, Garland Ranch Regional Park in Carmel Valley offers river access and hiking, and Fort Ord National Monument provides open trails on the former military reservation. South of Carmel, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and the Big Sur coast deliver dramatic headlands, sea-otter viewing, and redwood groves.

The Monterey Peninsula has a mild marine climate, so the RV parks around Del Rey Oaks operate year-round. The busiest stretch runs from late spring through early fall, peaking in July, August, and September when school holidays, car-week events, and the warmest, driest weather coincide. Reservations at the private parks fill weeks ahead during this window, and weekends sell out earliest. Spring brings wildflowers and lighter crowds, though coastal fog, locally called the marine layer, is common on summer mornings and can linger into the afternoon. Fall is often the clearest and warmest season, with September typically the warmest month on the immediate coast. Winter is the wet season; most rain falls between December and February. At Sunset State Beach the South Camp loop stays open all year, while the Dunes and Pine Hollow loops are closed outside the mid-March through October window. RV travelers heading to Big Sur should also check Highway 1 status, as winter storms periodically trigger closures south of Carmel.

The private parks around Del Rey Oaks lean toward full-service RV camping. Carmel by the River RV Park offers full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, water, sewer, restrooms with hot showers, and a small dog area, with back-in sites along the Carmel River. Marina Dunes RV Park has full hookups, 50-amp service, a clubhouse, heated pool, fitness room, laundry, camp store, and dump station, set on a dune preserve a short walk from the beach. Sunset State Beach is the trade-off option: no hookups and no on-site dump station, with RV and trailer length limited to 31 feet. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and food locker. Coastal access roads can be narrow, and ocean fog can keep mornings cool and damp even in summer.
