Campgrounds near Forestville, California
Forestville sits along the Russian River in western Sonoma County, about 70 miles north of San Francisco, surrounded by redwoods, vineyards, and gentle river frontage. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the lower Russian River corridor, Armstrong Redwoods, and the Sonoma Coast, which lies roughly 20 minutes west at Goat Rock Beach and Bodega Bay.
Camping options range from full-service private RV parks to small state-run sites. Burke's Canoe Trips operates a small riverside campground one mile north of town that pairs canoe and kayak rentals with overnight stays. Mirabel RV Park and Campground sits directly on the Russian River with riverside sites under redwoods. Schoolhouse Canyon Campground, just up the road toward Guerneville, offers shaded tent and RV sites with creek access. Wine Country RV Park provides full-hookup sites suited to larger rigs. Austin Creek State Recreation Area, reached through Armstrong Redwoods, sits 6 miles north of Guerneville and offers a remote, vehicle-restricted campground for small RVs and pop-ups.
Things to do near Forestville
The Russian River is the main draw. Paddlers can launch from Burke's Canoe Trips for a ten-mile self-guided canoe or kayak run through redwood corridor from Forestville to Guerneville, which takes about three and a half hours of actual paddling, though most groups stretch it to four or five hours for swim and picnic stops. Wildlife along the river includes otters, great blue herons, ospreys, turtles, and egrets.
Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, a short drive north, protects old-growth coast redwoods and connects to Austin Creek State Recreation Area, which offers 6,000 acres and 20 miles of trails through meadows, woodlands and rolling hills. Sonoma County wineries surround the town, and the Pacific coast at Goat Rock Beach and Bodega Bay is within 30 minutes.

Summer is peak season. June through August brings warm, dry weather ideal for river floats, swimming, and paddling, and riverside campgrounds book up well in advance, often with two-night weekend minimums between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Burke's Canoe Trips opens on Memorial Day weekend and operates seven days a week thereafter for canoe trips, kayak trips, and overnight camping, through mid October.
Spring and fall are quieter and milder. Spring can bring high river flows and occasional flooding on the lower Russian River, which sometimes limits beach access and shifts campground openings. Fall delivers warm afternoons, lower crowds, and harvest activity at surrounding wineries.
Winter is the wet season. Heavy rains from November through March can cause river flooding, and some private riverside parks close or restrict tent and cabin sites during this period, while RV sections often remain open year-round. Roads to backcountry sites at Austin Creek can also be affected by storms, and the park has seen extended closures following past wildfires.

Andre was easy to deal with and took the time to show me everything I needed to know about the trailer. The trailer was clean, well maintained and met my needs for dry camping with friends!
Mary H. - Oct 2026
Had a great experience with Andre. He communicated every day and was very accommodating. This trailer was cleaned and setup by the time we arrived, which made our vacation smooth and relaxing.

A truly excellent rental experience. The host was accommodating on pickup time, it was clean, everything worked, and it was fully equipped. Dishes, cookware, bedding, camping chairs, games, movies, and so many miscellaneous items. When we thought of something we needed it always turned out to be in a drawer. Dropping off was smooth and easy. We've camped for years with an A-frame trailer and this was our first time with a camping van. We love our A-frame but now we want one just like Ms. Retro.
Randall S. - Jun 2026
Fantastic trip with Miss Retro! We rented Miss Retro for three nights during Thanksgiving to camp with friends in Olema CA - everything g was great! The van is well equipped for two, with a generous sized bed and well set up kitchen. The van was cozy for sleeping and hanging out and we prepped gravy and potatoes on the inside stove burners / Maria and Isaac were great hosts, communicative, friendly and everything was as described.

How to book a campsite near Forestville
Private campgrounds in the Forestville and Guerneville area handle reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Mirabel RV Park and Campground, Schoolhouse Canyon Campground, and Wine Country RV Park each take direct bookings, and weekend minimums apply in summer. Burke's Canoe Trips reserves canoe, kayak, and overnight camping spots by phone, and the operator recommends calling ahead during peak season.
Bullfrog Pond Campground at Austin Creek State Recreation Area offers twenty-three campsites; sites 1 through 8 are first-come, first-served, while sites 9 through 24 are reserved through Hipcamp. Sites can only fit vehicles up to 20 feet in length, no hookups are provided, and the access road restricts trailers and towed vehicles, so book early for summer weekends and confirm rig length limits before arriving.
What to expect
Most riverfront campgrounds near Forestville are shaded by redwoods and second-growth forest, with gravel beaches, picnic tables, and fire rings at individual sites. Full hookups, dump stations, and hot showers are common at the larger private parks, while Bullfrog Pond has two sets of bathrooms with flush toilets and sinks but no shower facilities.
Rig size matters. Private parks along River Road can accommodate larger motorhomes, but Austin Creek welcomes RVs under 20 feet, and trailers and towed vehicles are prohibited on the winding mountain access road. Cell service is limited in Austin Creek and spotty in the redwood canyons. Summer nights are cool even after hot afternoons, river currents are gentle but unguarded, and food should be stored securely because deer, raccoons, and even a few black bears and mountain lions move through the area.

reservecalifornia.com/CaliforniaWebHome/Are there any unique driving tips for RV travel around Forestville?
Forestville’s country roads are scenic and easygoing, but a few local tips will set you up for success. Downtown roads are narrow—take it slow, especially near Main Street and Mirabel Road. Highway 116 winds along the river but is RV-friendly. Watch for occasional low-hanging branches when exploring vineyard backroads. GPS can route you onto smaller lanes, so stick to main routes unless your campground directions say otherwise. Bonus: Take River Road for the smoothest access to Armstrong Redwoods and the coast.
