Campgrounds near Graton, California
Graton sits in west Sonoma County, a short drive from the Russian River corridor and the heart of California wine country. RV travelers use the town as a base for redwood groves, river recreation, and tasting rooms in the Russian River Valley AVA. Most campgrounds in the area are clustered along River Road between Forestville and Guerneville, with additional options closer to Santa Rosa.
Mirabel RV Park and Campground, in nearby Forestville on River Road, has welcomed guests since 1958 and offers shaded sites among redwoods along the Russian River and Mark West Creek. Burke's Canoe Trips, just north of Forestville on the Russian River, runs a self-guided canoe and kayak trip from Forestville to Guerneville. Schoolhouse Canyon Campground sits in a redwood grove about two miles east of Guerneville and is one of the last authentic tent campgrounds along the Russian River, with a few sites that can accommodate small RVs or trailers up to about 25 feet. Closer to Santa Rosa, Wine Country RV Park caters to extended-stay guests, and Sonoma County Fairgrounds RV Park offers full-hookup sites with restrooms, showers, laundry, and a dog park.
Things to do near Graton
The Russian River is the centerpiece. Burke's Canoe Trips runs a roughly ten-mile self-guided paddle from Forestville to Guerneville through redwoods, with beaches along the way for swimming and picnicking. Mirabel RV Park and Campground has a short trail down to the river for kayaking or paddleboarding and offers canoe, kayak, and paddleboard rentals on site.
Land-based options are equally strong. Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve near Guerneville protects old-growth coast redwoods with easy walking trails. The Sonoma Coast, including Bodega Bay and Jenner, is roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive west for beachcombing, tide pools, and seafood. Tasting rooms across the Russian River Valley AVA sit minutes from most campgrounds, and downtown Santa Rosa adds the Charles M. Schulz Museum, restaurants, and farmers markets.

Summer is peak season. June through August is dry, warm, and the busiest stretch for river recreation and wine country travel, so popular sites can fill weeks ahead. July is typically the driest month, with rainfall near zero. Campers should plan for warm afternoons and cool nights typical of a Mediterranean climate.
Spring and fall are quieter and well suited to wine tasting and hiking. Harvest events across Sonoma County run from late summer through October, drawing weekend traffic to wineries and small towns. Winter is the wet season. Santa Rosa receives the bulk of its roughly 31 inches of annual rain from November through April, and the lower Russian River can flood after heavy storms, which sometimes affects riverside campgrounds and road access along River Road. Winters are short, cool, and wet, while summers are long, warm, and mostly clear. Some private parks reduce operations or shift to seasonal tent-only use in winter, while full-hookup options closer to Santa Rosa remain open year-round outside scheduled fair events.

Andre was easy to deal with and took the time to show me everything I needed to know about the trailer. The trailer was clean, well maintained and met my needs for dry camping with friends!
Mary H. - Oct 2026
Had a great experience with Andre. He communicated every day and was very accommodating. This trailer was cleaned and setup by the time we arrived, which made our vacation smooth and relaxing.

A truly excellent rental experience. The host was accommodating on pickup time, it was clean, everything worked, and it was fully equipped. Dishes, cookware, bedding, camping chairs, games, movies, and so many miscellaneous items. When we thought of something we needed it always turned out to be in a drawer. Dropping off was smooth and easy. We've camped for years with an A-frame trailer and this was our first time with a camping van. We love our A-frame but now we want one just like Ms. Retro.
Randall S. - Jun 2026
Fantastic trip with Miss Retro! We rented Miss Retro for three nights during Thanksgiving to camp with friends in Olema CA - everything g was great! The van is well equipped for two, with a generous sized bed and well set up kitchen. The van was cozy for sleeping and hanging out and we prepped gravy and potatoes on the inside stove burners / Maria and Isaac were great hosts, communicative, friendly and everything was as described.

How to book
Booking practices vary by property. Mirabel RV Park and Campground accepts reservations by phone only, not by email, and requires a two-night minimum on weekends and three nights on holiday weekends. The park is cash only and offers RV and trailer spaces with water and power but no dump station. Schoolhouse Canyon Campground takes reservations through its own website and also accepts walk-ins when sites are available, so arriving early helps on summer weekends.
Sonoma County Fairgrounds RV Park is open year-round except during scheduled fair and event closures in summer and early fall, so confirm dates before booking. Wine Country RV Park focuses on weekly and monthly stays for extended-stay guests, so it is not suited to short overnight stops. For summer weekends and harvest season, booking eight or more weeks ahead is recommended.
What to expect
Expect a mix of rustic riverside campgrounds and full-service RV parks. River campgrounds in Forestville and Guerneville lean rustic, with shaded sites under redwoods, picnic tables, and fire pits. Mirabel offers shaded 20-amp RV sites and seasonal tent camping along the river and creek, so larger rigs needing 30 or 50 amp service should check requirements before booking. Schoolhouse Canyon does not allow televisions or generators, and only a few sites can accommodate small RVs or trailers up to about 25 feet.
Full-hookup, big-rig-friendly options sit closer to Santa Rosa. Sonoma County Fairgrounds RV Park has 159 sites with 30 and 50 amp full hookups, restrooms, showers, laundry, and a dog park. Cell service is generally reliable near Santa Rosa and along River Road, but can fade in deeper redwood canyons. Bring layers: river valleys cool sharply after sunset even in midsummer.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Graton, CA
How much does an RV rental in Graton typically cost?
An RV rental in Graton fits a wide range of budgets, especially compared to a Sonoma County hotel during harvest. Travel trailers typically start around $95 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes commonly run $175 to $285, and larger Class A rigs can reach $325 or more. For a cheap RV rental in Graton, look at midweek pickups outside the September and October crush, and consider a slightly older travel trailer that a host can deliver. Booking 2 to 3 months ahead of harvest also locks in better rates. Pro tip: compare total prices, fees, and mileage policies side by side on RVezy before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Graton%2C+CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Graton, California?
Great news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Graton. California does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for the motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy, including most Class A, Class B, and Class C rigs. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during booking. International travelers should bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with their home country license. Pro tip: if it's your first time renting an RV, ask the host for a longer walkthrough at pickup, and choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer for the easiest drive through Sonoma County's winding back roads.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-08/What protection and roadside assistance is included with my Graton RV rental?
You can book with confidence: every RV rental in Graton booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan helps cover damage to the vehicle during your trip, so a small mishap on Highway 116 or a tight winery driveway doesn't ruin your vacation. During checkout you choose the level of coverage that fits your comfort, not the host. If you get a flat on the way to the coast or a battery dies at a campground, one call to roadside assistance gets help dispatched. Pro tip: take photos of the RV inside and out at pickup so any pre-existing wear is documented before you roll out of Graton.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Graton RV trip?
RVezy makes it low-risk to book your Sonoma wine country getaway. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (hosts do not), and every booking includes a grace period after you reserve where you can cancel for a full refund. Beyond the grace period, your refund depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. If a host cancels, you receive a full refund or travel credit. You'll see the specific terms during checkout. Pro tip: book early to secure the best Graton RV rentals for harvest season, knowing the grace period gives you breathing room to adjust if your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Graton RV rental?
Absolutely, Sonoma County is one of the most dog-friendly regions in California, and a pet-friendly RV rental in Graton is easy to find. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs (some allow cats too). Once you're on the road, your pup can join you at Doran Regional Park in Bodega Bay, walk the leashed trails at Spring Lake Regional Park in Santa Rosa, and visit dog-friendly tasting rooms like Mutt Lynch Winery in Windsor. Pro tip: message the host before booking to share your dog's size and breed, and ask about any cleaning fee, so pickup day is smooth and there are no surprises at drop-off.
parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/play/visit-with-petsCan the RV be delivered to my campground or vacation rental in Graton?
Yes, and it's one of the best ways to enjoy a stress-free Sonoma trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Graton and across western Sonoma County, meaning they'll drive the rig to your campground, vineyard property, or driveway, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Popular delivery destinations include the San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA Resort, Spring Lake Regional Park, and Doran Regional Park in Bodega Bay. To find these listings, use the Delivery filter on RVezy. Pro tip: delivery is ideal if it's your first time renting an RV, since you skip the driving and just enjoy your Graton RV trip from the moment you arrive.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Graton%2C+CaliforniaHow far can I drive from Graton, and are there mileage limits?
You've got room to roam. Most Graton hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day), and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect if you're planning a longer loop. From Graton you're about 12 miles to Bodega Bay, 60 miles to San Francisco, 110 miles to Mendocino, 175 miles to Lake Tahoe, and roughly 230 miles to Yosemite's Big Oak Flat entrance. Each listing clearly shows the mileage policy and any per-mile overage fee before you book. Pro tip: if you're planning an RV road trip from Graton up Highway 1 to the Lost Coast, filter for unlimited mileage listings to keep your budget predictable.
visitcalifornia.com/places-to-visit/sonoma-county/Where are the best campgrounds near Graton for RV camping?
You've got fantastic options within a 30-minute drive of Graton. The San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA Resort (about 20 miles south) is a 70-acre resort with full hookups, a pool, and Kamp K9 for dogs. Spring Lake Regional Park in Santa Rosa offers 31 oak-shaded sites with showers and a dump station, just 10 miles east. Doran Regional Park in Bodega Bay (20 miles west) puts you right on the harbor with over 120 sites. For redwoods, head to Casini Ranch Family Campground on the Russian River near Duncans Mills, about 18 miles north. Pro tip: Sonoma County Regional Parks accepts reservations up to 12 months in advance, and coastal sites at Doran sell out fast for summer weekends.
parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/visit/campgroundsWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Graton?
Graton shines almost year-round thanks to its warm-summer Mediterranean climate. Late spring (April to June) is the sweet spot, with highs in the mid 60s to upper 70s, hillsides still green, and fewer crowds than harvest. September and October bring grape harvest, golden vineyards, and reliably dry highs around 75 to 80°F, though campgrounds and tasting rooms book up. July and August are warm and dry (highs near 80°F, cool 55°F nights), perfect for the coast. Winters are mild (50s to high 50s) with most of the area's 12 inches of annual rain falling December through February. Pro tip: book a midweek shoulder-season Graton RV rental in May or early October for the best mix of weather, availability, and pricing.
weather.gov/mtr/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Graton?
You're going to do great, and Graton is actually a friendly place for first-time renters. Roads around town and out to Sebastopol, Forestville, and Santa Rosa are gentle two-lanes with light traffic compared to the Bay Area. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, the generator, and dump procedures, and you can message them throughout your trip. A Class C motorhome or a 22 to 25 foot travel trailer is the easiest first-timer choice. Pro tip: avoid the steep, narrow Coleman Valley Road to the coast on your first day; instead, take Highway 116 to Bodega Highway, which is wide, scenic, and stress-free for new RVers exploring the Russian River area.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Graton booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 101, a dead battery at Salt Point, or a tow off Bohemian Highway is one phone call away. For questions specific to the RV (like how to reset the inverter), message your host directly through the app, since they know their rig best. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before leaving Graton, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate so you can share details fast if you ever need help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Graton RV rental into Oregon, Nevada, or across the Canadian border?
Yes, you can turn your Sonoma rental into a bigger adventure, with one important note: travel into Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because insurance does not extend there. Travel to Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona is generally permitted, and crossing into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance terms, so confirm with your host before booking. Popular RV road trips from Graton include Highway 1 north to Brookings, Oregon (around 300 miles), Lake Tahoe (175 miles), and Crater Lake (around 430 miles). Pro tip: message the host directly from the listing page with your full route so they can confirm coverage and any mileage adjustments before you finalize your Graton RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I plan for, and how much is gas around Graton?
Budgeting fuel is easy once you know the basics. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves, but towing them typically drops your tow vehicle to 10 to 13 miles per gallon. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, while Class A rigs are usually 6 to 9 MPG. California gas prices have recently run around $4.60 to $5.20 per gallon, higher than the U.S. average, with most Graton RVs using regular unleaded (a few are diesel). Costco in Santa Rosa and the Safeway fuel station off Highway 116 are typically the cheapest fill-ups near Graton. Pro tip: top off before heading west to Bodega Bay, where coastal stations cost noticeably more.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds for my Graton RV trip?
A little planning goes a long way in Sonoma County. For Sonoma County Regional Parks like Spring Lake, Doran, and Westside Regional Park, reservations open 12 months in advance and summer weekends often fill within days of release. California State Parks (Sugarloaf Ridge, Salt Point, Bodega Dunes) book through ReserveCalifornia up to 6 months ahead, also on a rolling daily window. Private parks like the San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA Resort typically book 3 to 6 months out for peak weekends. Pro tip: for a last-minute RV camping in Graton, check midweek availability at Spring Lake or look at Casini Ranch on the Russian River, which often has more flexibility than coastal sites.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Graton?
Driving around Graton is mostly relaxed and scenic, which is great news for renters. Highway 116 through Sebastopol and Forestville is a calm two-lane road, and Highway 101 (the main north-south artery 8 miles east) is wide and easy. The trickier spots are the coastal routes: Coleman Valley Road and parts of Highway 1 north of Jenner have steep grades and tight curves best avoided in big Class A rigs. Fog can roll inland on summer mornings near Bodega Bay, so drive with low beams and take it slow. Winter brings occasional heavy rain but no snow. Pro tip: plan winery visits before 4 p.m. so you're driving the back roads of west Sonoma in good light, not at dusk when deer are most active.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Graton?
Sonoma County campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Most Sonoma County Regional Parks (Doran, Spring Lake, Gualala Point) have dump stations, flush toilets, hot showers, and potable water fill stations, though only Stillwater Cove has electrical hookups. Private parks like the San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA Resort and Casini Ranch offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. State parks like Bodega Dunes have dump stations and showers but no hookups. Pro tip: if you book a non-hookup site, plan to fill fresh water and dump on your way in or out at Spring Lake Regional Park, which has a convenient dump station and is just 10 miles from Graton, so you arrive at the coast ready to enjoy.
parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/visit/campgroundsWhat's typically included inside a Graton RV rental?
Graton RVs come ready for adventure. Most motorhome and campervan rentals in Graton sleep 2 to 7 people and include a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunks, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Many rigs add a roof-mounted air conditioner, furnace, TV, outdoor speakers, and a generator for off-grid use. Wi-Fi is host-dependent; some include a mobile hotspot for an extra fee. Every passenger needs a seatbelt-equipped seat, so check the seating capacity carefully if you're traveling with kids. Pro tip: ask your host whether linens, towels, and a starter kit (paper towels, coffee filters, dish soap) are included or available as an add-on, so you only pack what you actually need.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons can I get, and how do pickup and drop-off work?
Hosts in Graton often offer helpful add-ons that make your trip easier. Common extras include bedding and towel packages ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor tables, propane refills, generator hours, bikes, kayaks, and pet cleaning fees. Many hosts also offer paid delivery to campgrounds within 50 miles, including Bodega Bay and Russian River parks. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Graton, Sebastopol, or Santa Rosa, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Drop-off is typically at the same location with the tanks dumped and fuel refilled, unless your host offers a dump/refuel service as an add-on. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a stocked-kitchen add-on for a true turnkey Sonoma wine country experience.
visitcalifornia.com/experience/rv-camping-california/How does payment and the security deposit work for a Graton RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy. You pay for the booking online with a credit or debit card; no cash is exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) and released after drop-off, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. The deposit covers things like minor damage or excess cleaning not covered by the protection plan. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkthrough at pickup, take dated photos inside and out, and follow the host's checklist at return. Pro tip: returning the rig clean, with tanks dumped and fuel topped off (or paying for the dump/refuel add-on), is the easiest way to get your full Graton RV rental deposit back fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs Graton a good base for a family RV trip in wine country?
It's one of the best in California. A family RV trip from Graton puts you minutes from kid-friendly favorites: the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa (10 miles), Safari West wildlife preserve (20 miles), Spring Lake's summer swim lagoon, and Bodega Bay tide pools at Doran Beach. Tiny downtown Graton itself is walkable, with the beloved Willow Wood Market Cafe and Underwood Bar & Bistro making easy dinners after a day out. Many Graton hosts list family-sized Class C motorhomes and bunkhouse travel trailers that sleep 6 to 8, and pet-friendly options mean the dog can come too. Pro tip: pair a 3-night stay at the San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA Resort with a 2-night coastal stop at Doran for the ultimate kid-approved Sonoma RV camping itinerary.
