Camping near Hopland, California
Hopland sits in southern Mendocino County along U.S. 101, roughly two hours north of San Francisco. The small town spans only a few blocks of frontage along the highway, with the Russian River flowing southward through the eastern side of the community. The setting is wine country: oak-covered coastal foothills, vineyards along the valley floor, and a 17-mile drive east on State Route 175 to Clear Lake, California's largest natural lake. RV travelers use Hopland as a base for tasting rooms, Clear Lake recreation to the east, and the Mendocino coast and redwoods to the west.
The nearest Thousand Trails property, Russian River RV Campground, sits about 20 miles south near Cloverdale along the river. North toward Lakeport and Clear Lake, Lake County Fairgrounds / Lakeport Speedway offers event-adjacent sites, while Pine Acres Blue Lake Resort and Narrows Lodge Resort provide lake-area hookups suited to anglers and boaters. South in Ukiah, Redwood Empire Fair RV Park gives a Highway 101 base with town amenities. The area has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, which shapes when sites fill and when nearby parks are most usable.
Things to do near Hopland
Wine tasting anchors most trips, with tasting rooms clustered in and around town. The Solar Living Center, a 12-acre renewable energy and sustainable living demonstration site along Highway 101, offers self-guided walks through gardens, ponds, a solar calendar, and the Real Goods retail store, with workshops and specialized tours available.
Clear Lake, about 30 minutes east via State Route 175, is the largest natural freshwater lake fully within California and a top bass-fishing destination, with a swim beach, boat launches, and a marina at Clear Lake State Park. The Russian River offers kayaking, canoeing, rafting, swimming, and trout fishing close to camp. Cow Mountain BLM lands east of town provide hiking and OHV routes, and the Mendocino coast and redwoods are roughly 90 minutes west on State Route 253 and Highway 128.

The climate is Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Most rainfall arrives between November and March, with summer months typically receiving less than a quarter inch. That pattern drives the camping calendar.
Spring brings green hills, wildflowers, and warming days. It is a strong window for wine touring and river paddling before peak heat, though March can still be wet. Summer is hot and dry, with afternoon highs commonly in the upper 80s and 90s, and summer temperatures can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit in town. Demand peaks for hookup sites along the river and at Clear Lake, and shade matters when choosing a site. Late summer and early fall coincide with wine-grape harvest and California's most active wildfire stretch; check CAL FIRE and AirNow before travel, and confirm fire restrictions at the campground.
Fall cools quickly after October, with the first significant rains usually arriving by November. Winter stays mild by national standards but is the wet season. Some seasonal parks scale back operations, while year-round options remain along the Russian River corridor and at Clear Lake State Park.
How to book campgrounds near Hopland
Private parks near Hopland take reservations directly. Russian River RV Campground is part of the Thousand Trails network and requires a current Thousand Trails membership or Camping Pass; from April 15 through September 15, reservations have a maximum stay of 14 days per site, though consecutive stays are allowed when reservations move between different sites. Pine Acres Blue Lake Resort and Narrows Lodge Resort accept direct online and phone bookings, and Redwood Empire Fair RV Park in Ukiah books through the fairgrounds office. Lake County Fairgrounds / Lakeport Speedway availability shifts around event weekends, so confirm dates before driving.
For nearby state parks, reservations are available by phone at 1-800-444-7275 or online at ReserveCalifornia.com on a rolling six-month window, with each new arrival date opening at 8 a.m. Pacific time. Summer weekends at Clear Lake State Park fill quickly, so set a reminder for the rolling release date.
What to expect on the ground
Russian River RV Campground sits along the river near Cloverdale with river access and a dump station on the main road through the campground; some sites have full hookups while others do not, so confirm at booking, and expect patchy cell service typical of the valley. Clear Lake area parks like Pine Acres Blue Lake Resort and Narrows Lodge Resort skew toward fishing families, with docks, boat launches, and a quieter pace. At Clear Lake State Park, sites accommodate trailers and campers but offer no hookups, with fire rings, tables, food storage, and pay showers in restroom buildings.
Summer afternoons are hot; shaded sites and a working RV air conditioner make a difference. Buy firewood locally to limit pest spread, and watch for poison oak on trails. Quagga and zebra mussel inspections apply to boats entering Clear Lake, so plan for a check at the launch.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hopland, CA?
Good news: an RV rental in Hopland is one of the most affordable ways to explore Mendocino wine country. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans run $125 to $200, and larger Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 nightly. Mid-week pickups (Sunday through Thursday) usually shave 15 to 25 percent off weekend rates, and shoulder season trips in April, May, October, and November are the sweet spot for cheap RV rental Hopland deals. Pro tip: bundle a Tuesday-to-Thursday tasting trip through the Sanel Valley wineries and you'll often pay less than a single night at a Healdsburg hotel, with your bed and breakfast spot included.
visitmendocino.com/areas-to-explore/hopland/What license do I need to rent an RV in Hopland?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hopland, California. No commercial license, no RV endorsement, and no special class required, even for larger Class A motorhomes under 40 feet. You'll need to be 25 or older and complete a quick ID verification through the RVezy platform when you book. Visiting from outside the US? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit (usually under $20 from your local auto association) and you're all set. Most guests are shocked at how simple the paperwork is, so you can focus on planning your Russian River route instead.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-06/Is my Hopland RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, and that peace of mind is built into every booking. Every RV rental in Hopland on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Highway 101 or a hiccup at Lake Mendocino does not derail your trip. During checkout you choose from multiple protection tiers, ranging from standard to premium, which reduce your out-of-pocket exposure for eligible damages to the vehicle. You select the coverage level, not the host, so you control the confidence you bring on the road. Roadside assistance is included with every protection plan, giving you substantial support designed specifically for peer-to-peer RV travel.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Hopland RV trip?
Booking is lower risk than you might think. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, not individual hosts, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in that perfect Hopland motorhome rental without second-guessing. Beyond the grace window, refunds depend on how far out you are from your pickup date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credit so your plans stay protected. The full cancellation terms are shown before you confirm, so you always know exactly where you stand.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Hopland?
Absolutely, Hopland is a great base for traveling with dogs. Filter for pet-friendly RV rental Hopland listings on RVezy and you will find Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and campervans that welcome pets, many with no extra fee. Once you arrive, your pup will love the leashed trails at Lake Mendocino, the dog-friendly tasting rooms at several Sanel Valley wineries, and easy day trips to the Mendocino coast. Bring a long lead, plenty of water for warm summer days, and do a tick check after hikes since Mendocino oak woodlands are tick country. Most hosts simply ask that you keep pets off the bedding.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hopland%2C%20CaliforniaCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Hopland?
Yes, and it is the easiest way to start your first Hopland RV trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery Hopland service straight to popular spots like Kyen Campground at Lake Mendocino, KOA Cloverdale about 15 miles south, or a vineyard stay at Campovida. Your host levels the rig at your site, hooks up water, sewer, and shore power, and walks you through every system, awning, slide-out, propane, and fridge included. Delivery fees typically run a few dollars per mile from the host"s location, and many hosts waive or reduce the fee for longer stays. It is the right call if driving Highway 101 in a larger rig makes you nervous.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hopland%2C%20CaliforniaHow do RV rental mileage policies work in Hopland?
You have flexibility. Hosts in Hopland set their own mileage allowances, and on RVezy you will see options ranging from around 100 free miles per night to RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer Mendocino coast loops. Overage fees are set by the host and shown on the listing before you book. A tight loop from Hopland to Ukiah and Boonville easily fits inside a basic mileage cap, while a full Mendocino to Avenue of the Giants run is better suited to an unlimited-mile listing. Use the mileage filter on the search results page before you book and you will avoid any surprises at drop-off.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hopland%2C%20CaliforniaWhat are the best campgrounds near Hopland for an RV?
You are spoiled for choice. For RV camping Hopland with full hookups, check out Kyen Campground at Lake Mendocino about 12 miles north, with swimming, boating, and electric and water sites, and KOA Cloverdale 15 miles south with a pool, dog park, and full hookups. For a wine-country twist, Campovida and several Harvest Hosts and Hipcamp vineyards in Hopland offer farm-stay RV sites among the vines. Hendy Woods State Park in Anderson Valley is a great redwood option about 30 minutes west. Reserve summer weekends 60 to 90 days out, especially for Lake Mendocino, which fills fast around July 4th.
spk.usace.army.mil/Locations/Sacramento-District-Parks/Lake-Mendocino/When is the best time of year to visit Hopland in an RV?
The sweet spot is mid-March through June and again from September through mid-November. Hopland's Mediterranean climate brings hot, dry summers (July highs average 88 to 94°F) and mild, rainy winters (January lows around 37°F, almost never snow), so shoulder seasons give you the best of both worlds: green hills in spring, harvest buzz at the wineries in fall, and comfortable 65 to 80°F daytime temps for hiking. July and August are excellent if you want pool weather, but bring a rig with strong air conditioning. If you want vineyards in their crush-season glory, target late September through mid-October, when Sanel Valley is at peak color.
weather.gov/eka/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Hopland?
You will be fine, and Hopland is one of the friendlier places in California to learn. The town sits on a wide, well-signed stretch of Highway 101 with easy pull-outs, gentle valley terrain, and far less traffic than Bay Area cities. Every RVezy booking includes a hands-on walkthrough at pickup where your host shows you how to drive, level, hook up, and dump, no question is too basic. First time renting an RV? Start with a Class C motorhome or a travel trailer under 25 feet, both drive close to a large pickup. You also have 24/7 roadside assistance through your protection plan, and the host is just a text away the whole trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
Help is close at hand. Every Hopland RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering items like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. There are full-service garages and tire shops along Highway 101 in Ukiah about 12 miles north and Cloverdale about 15 miles south. Your host is also a quick text away for questions about quirky switches or the water pump. Cell service is solid in town and on Highway 101, though it gets patchy on backroads toward Cow Mountain, so download offline maps before heading out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat road trips can I take from Hopland?
Hopland is a great launchpad. Popular RV road trip from Hopland routes include the Mendocino Coast loop via Highway 128 through Anderson Valley to Mendocino village, about 75 miles and 2 hours, Avenue of the Giants and the Eel River redwoods about 120 miles north, Clear Lake for fishing about 35 miles east, and Russian River wine country through Healdsburg and Guerneville about 45 miles south. Cross-state travel within the US is typically allowed on RVezy bookings, while international travel into Mexico or Canada must be confirmed with your host before booking since coverage and host approval requirements apply.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Hopland RV trip?
Plan smart and fuel won't break the bank. Most Class C motorhomes and travel trailers in Hopland get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervans (Class B) often hit 16 to 20 mpg, and California gas prices in the Hopland/Ukiah corridor typically run $4.80 to $5.40 per gallon (a bit cheaper than the Bay Area). For a 4-day, 400-mile loop through Mendocino and Anderson Valley in a Class C, budget roughly $200 to $250 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Ukiah or Cloverdale rather than on the coast, where prices jump 40 to 60 cents per gallon. Costco in Santa Rosa (60 miles south) is the cheapest fill-up in the region if you're routing through.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book campgrounds near Hopland?
Earlier is better, especially for the popular parks. Kyen and Bu-Shay campgrounds at Lake Mendocino, operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers, take reservations on Recreation.gov, and summer weekends can sell out shortly after the booking window opens, so plan a winter booking for a July trip. Private parks like KOA Cloverdale usually have availability 30 to 60 days ahead, except over Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. State park sites at Hendy Woods in Anderson Valley book up to 6 months ahead on ReserveCalifornia. Mid-week stays almost always have availability, even in peak season.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2991What are driving conditions like around Hopland?
Easygoing, with a few mountain twists to know about. Highway 101 through Hopland is a wide, divided four-lane highway with gentle grades, perfect for stress-free RV driving. Where you'll want to slow down is Highway 253 to Boonville and Highway 175 to Lakeport, both tight, twisty mountain roads with steep grades and sharp switchbacks, manageable in any RV under 30 feet but take it slow. Summer brings occasional wildfire smoke and Red Flag warnings (check Cal Fire before fire-restricted areas), while winter storms can drop heavy rain and trigger localized flooding on the Russian River. Snow is essentially a non-issue. Cell service is strong along Highway 101 and spotty on backroads.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What hookups and amenities do Hopland campgrounds offer?
You'll find everything from full hookups to rustic. Major parks like Russian River Campground at Lake Mendocino, KOA Cloverdale, and Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, and free Wi-Fi, plus on-site dump stations for guests passing through. Most have hot showers, laundry, and potable water fill stations. For dumping mid-trip, the Ukiah Solid Waste Transfer Station and Pieta Truck Stop on Highway 101 both have public dump and water-fill access. State parks like Hendy Woods provide water and dump stations but no electric hookups, so you'll lean on your RV's house batteries and propane. Always carry a 25-foot fresh water hose and a sewer hose extension just in case.
cityofukiah.com/departments/public-works/What's typically included in a Hopland RV rental?
More than you'd expect. Most RVs on RVezy in Hopland come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), wet or dry bathroom with shower, dining seatbelts for travel passengers, propane heat, roof A/C, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid stays. Campervan rental Hopland options like Sprinter and Transit conversions usually feature a 2-burner stove, fridge, and convertible bed, ideal for two-person wine tours. Larger Class A and Class C rigs add slide-outs, outdoor kitchens, TVs, and sometimes Wi-Fi hotspots. Linens, kitchenware, and basic camp chairs are commonly included, check the listing's amenities tab for the exact gear list before you book.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-industry-services/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2/recreational-vehicles/What add-ons and options can I get with my Hopland rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize. Common RVezy add-ons in Hopland include bedding and towel packages ($25 to $50), kitchen kits ($25), generator use ($10 to $25 per night), bike racks, BBQs, camp chairs, outdoor mats, and pet packages. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in Hopland, Ukiah, or Cloverdale, while many hosts offer RV delivery Hopland service for a per-mile fee or flat rate to nearby campgrounds and vineyards. Mileage policies vary from 100 free miles per night to unlimited, with overages around 30 to 45 cents per mile. Always confirm pickup time, drop-off window, and dump/fuel return expectations in the message thread before your trip so there are no surprises.
dca.ca.gov/consumers/rentals.shtmlHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Simple and transparent. When you book an RV rental in Hopland through RVezy, you pay your trip total securely through the platform, with no cash or off-platform transfers. A refundable security deposit, separate from your booking payment, is held by RVezy before your trip start and released back to your payment method after drop-off, assuming the RV is returned in the agreed condition with fuel and tanks per the listing instructions. To avoid deductions, take dated photos at pickup and drop-off, follow the host"s return checklist, and message anything unusual right away. Hosts almost always appreciate the heads-up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs a family RV trip from Hopland a good idea?
It is one of the best in Northern California. A family RV trip Hopland adventure puts you within an hour of swimming and boat rentals at Lake Mendocino, the Skunk Train in Fort Bragg about 75 miles west, Anderson Valley breweries and apple farms, and the redwoods up Highway 101. Many RVezy listings sleep 6 to 8 with bunk beds and convertible dinettes, and family-friendly hosts often include camp chairs, outdoor games, and patient walkthroughs at pickup. Use the pet-friendly filter if your dog is part of the crew. Pro tip: plan a low-key swim day at Lake Mendocino that kids will remember.
