The town functions as a quiet base for visiting the seashore, with most RV-friendly camping concentrated a short drive away in Olema, along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, or up the coast toward Dillon Beach. Point Reyes National Seashore itself does not allow car or RV camping, so RV renters typically stay at private parks or nearby state parks and use Inverness as a day-trip hub. Olema Campground is located next to Point Reyes National Seashore and offers both RV and tent campsites in a rural setting next to 65,000 acres of unspoiled park land and wilderness. Up the bay, Lawson's Landing is a large RV park located at the mouth of Tomales Bay about 50 miles north of San Francisco at Dillon Beach, with over 400 campsites. Families typically combine a day at Limantour or Drakes Beach with a drive out to the Point Reyes Lighthouse and the historic dairy ranches along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. Tomales Bay supports kayaking, oyster farms, and clamming, and Lawson's Landing is a fishing and boating resort and campground situated at the mouth of Tomales Bay, about 50 miles north of San Francisco and 20 miles west of Petaluma at Dillon Beach. Inland, Samuel P. Taylor State Park offers sites under coast redwoods along Lagunitas Creek, with shaded hiking and the paved Cross Marin Trail for kids on bikes. The park is 3 miles west of Lagunitas, 15 miles west of San Rafael and about 8 miles east of Point Reyes Station on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. The Point Reyes coast has a Mediterranean climate with two clear seasons. Winter is the wet season: December is the wettest month, receiving an average of 162 mm of precipitation distributed across 13 rainy days. A truly excellent rental experience. The host was accommodating on pickup time, it was clean, everything worked, and it was fully equipped. Dishes, cookware, bedding, camping chairs, games, movies, and so many miscellaneous items. When we thought of something we needed it always turned out to be in a drawer. Dropping off was smooth and easy. We've camped for years with an A-frame trailer and this was our first time with a camping van. We love our A-frame but now we want one just like Ms. Retro.

Fantastic trip with Miss Retro! We rented Miss Retro for three nights during Thanksgiving to camp with friends in Olema CA - everything g was great! The van is well equipped for two, with a generous sized bed and well set up kitchen. The van was cozy for sleeping and hanging out and we prepped gravy and potatoes on the inside stove burners / Maria and Isaac were great hosts, communicative, friendly and everything was as described.

Different campgrounds use different systems. Olema Campground is a private park and books direct through its own reservation system, with sites for RVs and tents and limited cabins. Lawson's Landing is also private and family-run; reservations are available to book with arrival dates 6 months out from today's date and open up at 12:01 a.m. The San Francisco North / Petaluma KOA, Novato RV Park, and Wine Country RV Park Sonoma each take bookings directly through their own websites. For the nearby state park option, reservations are available through ReserveCalifornia up to six months in advance. Summer weekends and Bay Area holidays fill quickly, so booking at the six-month mark is recommended for any site within an hour of Inverness.

What to expect on the ground

RV access varies sharply by site. Olema Campground is the closest and possibly the only campground in the area with full hookups for RVers, with showers, a laundry, and a flat layout close to the village of Olema and Point Reyes Station. At Lawson's Landing, hookups are limited; the campground offers potable water throughout for tank filling and dump stations available for use during your stay, so plan to arrive with full water and empty tanks if booking a non-hookup site. Cell service is patchy on the west side of Tomales Bay and inside Point Reyes. Bring layers: coastal fog can drop summer temperatures quickly, and evenings are cool year-round. Wildlife is active, so use food lockers where provided and keep a clean site. Dogs are restricted on most Point Reyes beaches and trails, so check rules before bringing pets.
