Camping near Kings Beach, California
Kings Beach sits on the north shore of Lake Tahoe in Placer County, about 13 miles southeast of Truckee on Highway 28 and roughly a mile west of the Nevada state line. The town has a sandy public beach and day-use park, but no campground on the lakefront, so RV travelers base out of state parks and private resorts within a 20-minute drive.
To the west along Highway 28, Tahoe State Recreation Area in Tahoe City offers a small lakeside campground with 23 sites tucked among Ponderosa and Jeffrey pines. Continuing south on Highway 89, Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park has 175 sites at General Creek, set back about half a mile from the lake in a pine and fir forest. North of Kings Beach near Truckee, Coachland RV Resort and Truckee River RV Park provide full-hookup sites at lower elevation, and Splitrock at Donner Memorial State Park sits at the east end of Donner Lake within two miles of Interstate 80.
Things to do around Kings Beach
The Kings Beach State Recreation Area features a sandy beach, picnic tables under pines, and a boat ramp on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. Swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking dominate the summer scene. A short drive west, Tahoe City connects to a paved bike path along the Truckee River and around the lake, with rafting put-ins downtown. Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park has nearly two miles of lake frontage, alpine hiking trails, and the historic Hellman-Ehrman Mansion, open for guided tours from late May through September 30. Donner Memorial State Park, on the way to Truckee, offers swimming, fishing, lakeside trails, and the Emigrant Trail Museum covering the Donner Party and early Sierra crossings. Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Sugar Pine Point and downhill skiing at nearby resorts.

The north Tahoe camping calendar is driven by snowpack and elevation. Most state-park campgrounds in the Sierra District, including Tahoe State Recreation Area and the Splitrock loop at Donner Memorial State Park, open in late May and close in mid-September; exact dates shift each year with snowmelt. At Donner Memorial, the Ridge loop typically opens first in late May, followed by Splitrock a week later and Creek in early June.
Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park is the exception: General Creek campground stays open year-round, with showers closing in winter and other services provided weather permitting. Reservations are accepted roughly mid-May through mid-September, and winter snow camping is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Private parks like Coachland RV Resort and Truckee River RV Park operate year-round and fill quickly during ski season around Northstar and Palisades Tahoe. July and August are peak; reservations open six months ahead and lakefront sites disappear within minutes.
How to book a site
All California State Park campgrounds in the Tahoe-Donner area, including Tahoe State Recreation Area, Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park, and Splitrock at Donner Memorial State Park, are booked through ReserveCalifornia, either online at reservecalifornia.com or by phone at 1-800-444-PARK (7275). The rolling window opens six months in advance of the arrival date, and popular summer weekends, especially holidays, sell out the moment they release. Private parks such as Coachland RV Resort and Truckee River RV Park take direct reservations through their own websites and accept larger rigs with full hookups; Coachland restricts tent camping and older trailers, so confirm rig age and length when booking.
What to expect on site
Elevation around Kings Beach runs roughly 6,200 to 6,400 feet, so nights stay cool even in midsummer, often dropping into the 40s Fahrenheit. State-park campgrounds in the area provide picnic tables, fire rings, metal bear-resistant food lockers, flush toilets, and coin-operated showers, but no hookups; food storage in the lockers is required by law, and bears are active in all seasons. Tahoe State Recreation Area accepts trailers up to 15 feet and motorhomes up to 21 feet, while Donner Memorial allows trailers to 24 feet and RVs to 28 feet. For full hookups with water, sewer, and 30/50-amp power, plan on a private RV park near Truckee. Campfires and charcoal are prohibited on Red Flag Warning days, so propane is the safest bet during fire season.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Kings Beach, CA
What's the best time of year for an RV rental in Kings Beach, CA?
Summer is the sweet spot for any Kings Beach RV trip, with July and August bringing sunny highs in the mid-70s and crisp 45-50°F nights perfect for sleeping with the windows cracked. June and September are insider favorites: the lake is still gorgeous, campgrounds are easier to book, and nightly rates often dip. Spring (April-May) can still be snowy at 6,200+ feet elevation, while winter (December-March) transforms the North Shore into a Tahoe ski paradise with 140+ inches of annual snowfall. Heads up: Lake Tahoe water stays a brisk 55-65°F even in August, so it's more 'sparkle and paddleboard' than 'all-day swim.' Pro tip: book a midweek RV camping Kings Beach trip in late June and you'll feel like you have the lake to yourself.
weather.gov/rev/How much does it cost to rent an RV in Kings Beach?
RV rental in Kings Beach is more affordable than most people expect, especially when you split costs with family or friends. On RVezy, travel trailers near North Lake Tahoe typically start around $95-$150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175-$275, and larger Class A rigs land in the $250-$400 range. Hosts set their own pricing, so you'll find everything from cheap RV rental Kings Beach options for budget weekends to luxury rigs for special occasions. Want to save? Travel midweek, book in June or September (shoulder season), and use the price filter to sort listings. Bundling delivery with a multi-night stay at a campground like Tahoe Valley often beats hotel prices on the North Shore.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kings%20Beach%2C%20CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Kings Beach, CA?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Kings Beach. California does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for the motorhomes and trailers listed on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies approved drivers right inside the booking platform, so there's no extra paperwork to chase down. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association. Most first-time renters are pleasantly surprised at how straightforward the requirements are, even for a 30-foot Class C heading up Highway 267.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Kings Beach RV rental?
Every RV rental in Kings Beach booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 28 with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers damage to the RV and provides financial backup if something unexpected happens on your Lake Tahoe RV trip. During checkout you can choose between coverage tiers to match your comfort level, not the host's preference. Combined with around-the-clock roadside support for flat tires, lockouts, or breakdowns on the way to Truckee, you're covered from pickup to drop-off. Review the current plan details on RVezy's insurance and protection page before you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my Kings Beach plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a clear, platform-wide cancellation policy (hosts don't set this themselves), and the exact terms for your trip are shown before you confirm payment. Depending on how far in advance you cancel from your trip start date, you may receive a full or partial refund. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or provides a refund or travel credit, which matters in the Sierra where weather can occasionally close I-80 or Highway 267. Pro tip: book early to lock in a great Tahoe-area rig, then review the cancellation policy article on the RVezy Help Center so you know exactly what to expect.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I find a pet-friendly RV rental in Kings Beach?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts welcome dogs on RVezy, so finding a pet-friendly RV rental in Kings Beach is as easy as toggling the 'Pet-Friendly' filter on the search page. Once you're here, your pup has options: Kings Beach State Recreation Area allows leashed dogs on sidewalks and picnic areas (and at the Dog Beach east of the boat ramp), and the Tahoe Rim Trail and many Tahoe National Forest trails are leash-friendly. Note that dogs aren't allowed on the main sandy beach in Placer County, but North Tahoe Regional Park in nearby Tahoe Vista has off-leash zones. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and ask if they leave a bowl or bed for furry guests.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=511Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Kings Beach?
Yes, RV delivery in Kings Beach is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather not drive a 28-foot rig up Highway 267 from Reno. Many North Lake Tahoe hosts will deliver to spots like Tahoe Valley Campground, Granite Flat, Sandy Beach Campground in Tahoe Vista, or even a private driveway, then set up the awning, level the rig, connect water and power, and walk you through every system. You just show up with your groceries and gear. Look for the 'Delivery' filter when searching, and message the host to confirm the fee and distance. It's hands-down the easiest way to enjoy a Kings Beach RV trip without ever touching the steering wheel.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/tahoe/recreation/camping-cabins/recarea/?recid=55619&actid=29How do mileage limits work, and how far can I drive from Kings Beach?
Mileage on RVezy is flexible: every host sets their own daily mileage allowance (commonly 100-150 free miles per day), with additional miles available at a per-mile rate, and you can even find an RV rental with unlimited mileage by filtering for it. The good news for Kings Beach travelers? Most of the best stuff is close. Sand Harbor is just 10 miles east, Truckee is 13 miles north, Squaw Valley/Palisades Tahoe is 20 miles, Donner Memorial State Park is about 20 miles, and Emerald Bay is roughly 30 miles around the lake. Even Reno is just 45 miles. You can comfortably circle all of Lake Tahoe (72 miles) in a single day and still be under most mileage caps.
fhwa.dot.gov/byways/byways/2310Where are the best campgrounds near Kings Beach for my RV?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping Kings Beach. A few of the best campgrounds near Kings Beach: Sandy Beach Campground in Tahoe Vista (right on the lake, just 2 miles away, with hookups), Granite Flat Campground along the Truckee River (about 10 miles north, US Forest Service, great for larger rigs), Tahoe Valley Campground in South Lake Tahoe (400+ sites with full hookups, pool, and laundry), Donner Memorial State Park near Truckee (lakefront, with historical exhibits), and William Kent Campground on the west shore (shaded sites under tall pines). Pro tip: California State Park sites book up six months ahead via ReserveCalifornia, so set a calendar reminder the day your dates open or grab a private RV park as a backup.
reservecalifornia.com/What's it like driving an RV around Kings Beach and Lake Tahoe?
Driving around Kings Beach is more manageable than first-timers expect, even in a motorhome rental Kings Beach renters often choose for the North Shore. Highway 28 hugs the lake with gentle curves and stunning views, while Highway 267 over Brockway Summit (7,200 ft) climbs steadily but is paved and well-maintained. Summer brings tourist traffic, especially weekends near the beach, so leave early. Winter is a different beast: chains or 4WD with snow tires are often required from November through April, and Caltrans posts real-time chain control updates. Pro tip: avoid driving Highway 89 through Emerald Bay in a long rig, as it's narrow with tight cliffs; the east shore loop is much more RV-friendly.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What if something goes wrong during my Kings Beach RV trip?
You're never alone out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on Highway 267, run out of fuel near Crystal Bay, lock yourself out at Sand Harbor, or need a battery jump at your campsite, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a direct resource and usually just a text away for questions about the rig's quirks (how the water heater works, where the breaker panel lives). RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup and save your host's number plus the RVezy support line in your phone before you leave the driveway.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best RV road trip routes from Kings Beach?
An RV road trip from Kings Beach opens up some of the West's most iconic scenery. Top routes: lap Lake Tahoe (72 miles, half-day loop with stops at Emerald Bay and Sand Harbor), head to Yosemite National Park via Highway 89 and 120 (about 150 miles, 3.5 hours), drive to Lassen Volcanic National Park (about 175 miles north), explore Reno and Pyramid Lake (45-80 miles), or push east into Nevada's Great Basin. You can absolutely cross state lines into Nevada with your RVezy rental, no extra paperwork needed, but travel to Mexico isn't permitted due to insurance limits. Pro tip: message your host before booking if you're planning a longer route so they can confirm mileage works for your itinerary.
nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/driving.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Kings Beach RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's easy to budget once you know the numbers. Most Class C motorhomes get 8-12 miles per gallon (MPG), travel trailers reduce a tow vehicle's MPG to 10-14, and campervans (Class B) often hit 16-20 MPG. California gas prices around North Lake Tahoe typically run higher than the national average, so fueling up in Truckee or Reno before you arrive can save 30-60 cents per gallon. For a typical 4-day trip looping Tahoe (under 200 miles total), expect roughly $80-$160 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: the Costco in Reno is about 45 minutes away and consistently has the cheapest diesel and gas in the region, perfect for a fill-up at the start or end of your trip.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Kings Beach?
Plan ahead and you'll land a dream site. California State Park campgrounds (D.L. Bliss, Sugar Pine Point, Donner Memorial, Emerald Bay) open reservations exactly six months in advance through ReserveCalifornia.com, and prime summer weekends sell out within minutes of going live. US Forest Service sites like Granite Flat, William Kent, and Meeks Bay book through Recreation.gov on a similar six-month rolling window. Private parks like Tahoe Valley Campground or Coachland RV Park in Truckee are a bit more flexible but still fill 2-3 months ahead for July and August. Pro tip: if you strike out, set a daily cancellation alert; spots open up constantly as plans change, and a midweek Tahoe RV site is almost always findable within a week of your trip.
recreation.gov/What hookups and amenities will I find at Kings Beach area campgrounds?
You'll find a great mix. Private parks like Tahoe Valley Campground and Coachland RV Park near Truckee offer full hookups (30/50-amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and on-site dump stations. California State Park campgrounds around Tahoe typically provide water spigots, vault or flush toilets, fire rings, picnic tables, and bear-proof food lockers (essential, since black bears are very active in the Tahoe Basin) but most don't have sewer hookups at each site. US Forest Service campgrounds like Granite Flat are more rustic: pit toilets and shared water. Need to dump tanks? Truckee's Coachland RV Park and South Lake Tahoe's Tahoe Valley both offer dump stations for non-guests for a small fee.
fs.usda.gov/main/tahoe/recreationWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Kings Beach?
RVs on RVezy come ready to camp. Most rentals include a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a private bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 4-8 people across queen beds, bunks, and convertible dinettes, plus heating and air conditioning. Class C motorhomes and Class A rigs usually have a generator for off-grid power, while many newer units offer solar, Bluetooth stereos, outdoor speakers, and even smart TVs. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in the Tahoe Basin (cell coverage drops in canyon areas), so many hosts include a mobile hotspot or signal booster. Every passenger seat used while driving must have a seatbelt, so check the 'sleeps vs. seats' count on the listing if you're traveling with a bigger group, and message the host with any questions.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for a Kings Beach RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy love making your trip easier. Popular add-ons for a Kings Beach RV rental include kitchen kits (pots, plates, coffee maker), linen and bedding packages, camping chairs, outdoor grills, generators, paddleboards, bike racks, and even pre-stocked firewood for chilly Tahoe nights. Pickup is usually at the host's home in the North Lake Tahoe, Truckee, or Reno area, and delivery to your campground or rental cabin is widely offered for a flat fee. Most hosts include a 30-60 minute orientation walkthrough at pickup so you understand every system before driving off. Pro tip: ask about a 'late return' option if you're flying out of Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO); a flexible drop-off window beats rushing through Spooner Summit.
renoairport.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully handled through the RVezy platform, no cash, no awkward exchanges with the host. You'll pay your rental total (nightly rate, service fee, protection plan, and any chosen add-ons) by credit card when you book, and the refundable security deposit is handled separately from your booking payment and pre-authorized on your card before pickup. The deposit is released back to you after the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition. To avoid deposit issues on your rent an RV in Kings Beach trip, do a quick walkthrough video at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and empty the tanks at a dump station like the one at Coachland RV Park before heading home.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksI'm a first-time renter, is a Kings Beach RV trip a good idea?
It's actually one of the best places in California to learn. For first time renting an RV, Kings Beach offers the perfect combo: mostly flat lakeside roads on Highway 28, plenty of nearby campgrounds within 15 minutes (so you're not driving for hours), and tons of host support. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through how to level the rig, hook up water and electric, run the slide-outs, use the propane stove, and dump the tanks. Many also send a video walkthrough you can re-watch at your campsite. Choose a smaller Class C or campervan rental Kings Beach for easier handling, book delivery if backing in feels intimidating, and you'll be flipping pancakes lakeside by sunrise.
nps.gov/subjects/camping/rv-camping.htmCan I rent an RV in Kings Beach for a winter ski trip?
Yes, and it's a hidden gem of a trip. Several RVezy hosts in the North Lake Tahoe area keep their rigs available year-round for skiers and snowboarders heading to Northstar California (8 miles), Palisades Tahoe (20 miles), Diamond Peak (10 miles), or Mt. Rose (15 miles). Look for listings that mention four-season insulation, heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a propane furnace, all of which keep things cozy when Kings Beach drops to 20°F at night. You'll want to park at a winter-open RV park with shore power (Coachland RV Park in Truckee is the go-to), bring tire chains, and ask your host about Caltrans chain requirements. Bonus: parking lots at most Tahoe ski resorts allow RV day-parking, so you can boot up trailside.
