Camping near Lagunitas-Forest Knolls
Lagunitas-Forest Knolls sits in the wooded San Geronimo Valley of west Marin County, on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard between San Rafael and the Point Reyes coast. The area functions as a base camp for two major public lands: Samuel P. Taylor State Park, which covers 2,882 acres of wooded countryside ranging from shady canyon redwood groves to oak-studded grasslands and the rolling hills atop Barnabe Peak, and Point Reyes National Seashore, which offers backcountry hike-in campgrounds and boat-in campsites along Tomales Bay.
Drivable RV options cluster on the east side of Marin. Olema Campground sits closest, near the Bear Valley entrance to Point Reyes. Novato RV Park, Marin RV Park, Marin Park, and Golden Gate Trailer Park run along the Highway 101 corridor and serve travelers who want hookups and easy access to San Francisco day trips. There is no car or RV camping inside Point Reyes National Seashore, so RV travelers must stay at private parks or Samuel P. Taylor and day-trip into the national seashore.
Things to do near Lagunitas-Forest Knolls
Hiking is the headline activity. The Pioneer Tree Trail loops through old-growth redwoods, and a longer route climbs Devil's Gulch to the summit of Barnabe Peak, with clear-day views of Inverness Ridge, Bolinas Ridge, Tomales Bay, and Mount Tamalpais. The paved Cross Marin Trail runs along Lagunitas Creek through Samuel P. Taylor State Park, offering easy family rides and walks.
Wildlife watching is strong in winter and spring. Black-tailed deer are common, and coho salmon and steelhead migrate up Lagunitas Creek to spawn. Point Reyes adds beach walks at Limantour and Drakes, the historic lighthouse, and elephant seal viewing near Chimney Rock. Tomales Bay supports kayaking and oyster farms along its eastern shore.

Summer and early fall are the prime driving and camping window. Days are dry and mild, marine fog often burns off by late morning, and trails through the redwoods stay cool under canopy. This is also peak demand: weekend sites at Samuel P. Taylor and the closest private parks book months ahead.
Spring brings wildflowers and full creeks. After winter rains, look for late-season salmon and steelhead activity, and wildflowers peak from March through May. Lagunitas Creek access inside Samuel P. Taylor is closed from December 1 through June 15 each year to protect threatened coho salmon and steelhead eggs and juveniles.
Winter is the wet season. Pacific storms roll in, day-use is quiet, and the redwoods drip with rain. Roads stay open, but campers should expect saturated sites and possible flood-related closures along Lagunitas Creek. Fire restrictions typically tighten in late summer and fall when grasses cure; check current rules with the park before arrival.

When my prior host backed out and canceled on me the day of (There was no communication up til 48hrs before trip, and stopped again the morning of. I reached out for clarification and location, no response! Moments later Rveezy tells me the host is no longer comfortable with accommodating us) Evgeniy not only responed within 5min of me reachout out, but had us out and on the road to enjoy out trip within an hour. The vehicle is perfect, clean and easy to function. We had never driven or worked an RV before but his quick rundown and eargeness to answer any questions helped put out minds at ease. He is so kind, professonal, and absolutely Amazing 🤩. We will definitely rent from him again despite our extra charges for not having time to thoroughly clean out and fill up; but that was a very small price to pay for what we would have missed if he hadn't come to help us out of a pickle. How to book campgrounds near Lagunitas-Forest Knolls
Samuel P. Taylor State Park is reserved through California's state system. Reservations go through reservecalifornia.com or 1-800-444-7275, and sites release on a rolling six-month window. The park offers family campsites, group sites, a hike-and-bike site, an equestrian camp at Devil's Gulch, and rental cabins.
Point Reyes backcountry sites use the federal system. Backcountry camping at Point Reyes National Seashore is by reservation only through Recreation.gov or 877-444-6777. Most sites release up to three months in advance, with the remainder available up to 14 days out. Camping is limited to four nights per visit and 30 nights per year. Olema Campground, Novato RV Park, Marin RV Park, Marin Park, and Golden Gate Trailer Park book directly through each operator; reserve summer weekends well in advance.
What to expect at Lagunitas-Forest Knolls campgrounds
Cell service is patchy in the canyon. Sporadic reception is common, and the ranger station has phones for emergencies. Sites under the redwoods stay shaded and cool, even on hot inland days, so pack layers. Sites can feel snug, and larger Class A rigs should confirm length limits before booking Samuel P. Taylor, where many sites accommodate RVs up to about 31 feet. The state park dump station has been out of service; RV travelers needing full hookups or a dump should plan to use the private parks along the Highway 101 corridor.
Pet rules vary by agency. At Samuel P. Taylor, dogs are allowed in the picnic day-use area, in the campground (excluding the hike-and-bike site and cabins), and on the Cross Marin Trail, but not on other trails or in the creek. Point Reyes backcountry campgrounds allow no pets. Private RV parks along Highway 101 generally allow leashed dogs; confirm at booking.

You can book with confidence. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you reserve, so you have breathing room if plans shift. Refund amounts after that grace period depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits. You will not see a cancellation policy buried in each listing because it is handled centrally by RVezy. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs near Samuel P. Taylor State Park, knowing you have flexibility if life happens.

Taylor State Park, leashed dogs are welcome in campsites, the day-use picnic area, and on paved roads and the Cross Marin Trail along Lagunitas Creek. Point Reyes National Seashore restricts pets on most trails, but leashed dogs are allowed on portions of Kehoe Beach and a few other coastal areas. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee (usually $25 to $75 per stay) and bring a towel for muddy creek-side paws.
nps.gov/pore/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to me in Lagunitas-Forest Knolls?
Yes, RV delivery Lagunitas-Forest Knolls is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters who would rather skip towing a 30-foot trailer along the twisty curves of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. Taylor State Park, Olema Campground, or a private driveway, then walk you through every system before they leave. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see which listings offer it. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location. Pro tip: book delivery to your campsite and treat the RV like a cabin on wheels.

Hosts set their own mileage policies, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and some featuring RV rental with unlimited mileage. parks.ca.gov/?page_id=469When is the best time of year for an RV trip to Lagunitas-Forest Knolls?
The sweet spot for RV camping Lagunitas-Forest Knolls runs from late April through October, when redwood-canopy days hover between 65 and 78°F and evenings dip into the 45 to 55°F range. June and July can bring thick coastal fog (locals call it the marine layer) that burns off by midday, while September and October deliver the warmest, clearest weather of the year. Winters are mild but wet, with 50 to 60°F days and steady rain from December through March. Pro tip: book a late-September Lagunitas-Forest Knolls RV trip for the magic combo of empty trails, salmon returning to Lagunitas Creek, and golden hillsides above Barnabe Peak.
weather.gov/mtr/I've never driven an RV before. Is Lagunitas-Forest Knolls a good place to start?
You will do great, and you are not alone. Many guests on RVezy are first time renting an RV, and your host will walk you through every system at pickup, from leveling and slide-outs to propane, water, and the dump valves. For your first RV rental in California, stick with a Class C motorhome (drives like a big van) or a smaller travel trailer under 25 feet, which handle the gentle curves of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard comfortably. Avoid bringing huge Class A coaches into downtown San Anselmo or San Francisco. Pro tip: ask your host to deliver and set up at Samuel P. Taylor so your first drive is from the campground out, not into it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Lagunitas-Forest Knolls trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 1 or a dead battery at Samuel P. Taylor State Park is one phone call away from being handled. Help can be dispatched throughout Marin and Sonoma counties, including the more remote stretches around Tomales Bay where cell service can be spotty. Your host is also a quick message away for questions about quirks specific to their rig. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number from your booking confirmation on your phone and keep a printed copy inside the RV.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lagunitas-Forest Knolls RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes to interstate travel, with one important note on borders. Most hosts happily allow you to take their RV throughout California, into Oregon for a coastal redwoods run, or east to Nevada for Lake Tahoe and beyond. Travel into Canada may be allowed by some hosts (insurance can extend north), but you'll want to message the host before booking and get written approval. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the insurance and protection package do not cover Mexico. Pro tip: a great RV road trip from Lagunitas-Forest Knolls is Highway 101 north through the Avenue of the Giants (215 miles) and on to Crater Lake, Oregon (about 450 miles).
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat's the realistic fuel budget for an RV trip around Marin County?
Marin gas runs higher than the national average, so plan smart. As of 2026, regular unleaded in West Marin typically runs $5.00 to $5.60 per gallon, with the nearest stations in Lagunitas, Point Reyes Station, and San Geronimo. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg), campervans (Class B) get 14 to 18 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. For a typical 4-night Lagunitas-Forest Knolls trip with 250 miles of driving, budget $125 to $175 for fuel in a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Novato or San Rafael on your way in. Stations along Highway 101 are noticeably cheaper than anywhere west of Fairfax.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lagunitas-Forest Knolls?
Book early. Samuel P. Taylor State Park, the marquee campground in the area, opens reservations exactly six months ahead through the ReserveCalifornia system, and prime summer weekends sell out within minutes of the booking window opening at 8 a.m. Pacific. For Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, set a calendar reminder. Olema Campground (private) typically books 3 to 4 months out for summer. Off-season weekdays from November through March often have same-week availability. Pro tip: if you missed the six-month window, check ReserveCalifornia daily around 8 a.m., when cancellations are released. It's how locals score last-minute redwood sites.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the local roads like for driving an RV around Lagunitas-Forest Knolls?
You'll be navigating classic West Marin: scenic but winding. Sir Francis Drake Boulevard from Fairfax through Lagunitas is two lanes with gentle curves and a posted RV-friendly 35 to 45 mph, while Highway 1 along the coast tightens up considerably past Olema, especially the cliffside section north of Stinson Beach. Stick to Class C or smaller for the coast; Class A coaches over 32 feet should stay east of Olema. Watch for low-hanging redwood branches at some campsites and morning fog along Tomales Bay. Pro tip: drive into the area on a Friday morning rather than evening. Sir Francis Drake Boulevard backs up after 4 p.m. as Bay Area beach traffic heads west.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/road-informationWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Lagunitas-Forest Knolls?
Expect a mix of rustic and full-service, depending on where you stay. Samuel P. Taylor State Park has flush toilets, coin-operated hot showers, drinking water spigots, fire rings, picnic tables, and food lockers at every site, though its dump station and RV water fill have been out of service indefinitely due to budget cuts. Olema RV Resort & Campground next door offers full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric) and is the go-to dump station and freshwater fill for the area, available to non-guests for a small fee. Pro tip: top off freshwater and dump tanks at Olema before checking into Samuel P. Taylor, then enjoy the redwoods worry-free.
parks.ca.gov/samuelptaylorWhat features and amenities come inside the RVs on RVezy in Lagunitas-Forest Knolls?
Plenty of comfort, even for a first time renting an RV. Most motorhomes and trailers on RVezy in the Lagunitas-Forest Knolls area come fully outfitted with a queen or king bed, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette that converts to a bed, heating, air conditioning, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a generator, outdoor awning, TV, and WiFi hotspot, and most sleep 4 to 6 people comfortably for a family RV trip Lagunitas-Forest Knolls. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps 6+ if you're traveling with kids, and check each listing's amenity list to confirm the generator, you'll want it at Samuel P. Taylor where there are no hookups.
parks.ca.gov/samuelptaylorWhat add-ons and options can I get with my RV rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons for a campervan rental Lagunitas-Forest Knolls or motorhome rental include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots and utensils ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor tables ($10 to $25), generators, bike racks, and even pre-stocked firewood. Mileage policies vary by host: many offer 100 free miles per night, while others advertise RV rental with unlimited mileage, ideal for a Highway 1 loop. Pickup and dropoff are usually at the host's location or via delivery for an added fee. Pro tip: bundle add-ons through your host instead of buying gear last-minute in Point Reyes Station, where the small store charges a premium.
nps.gov/pore/planyourvisit/index.htmHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Lagunitas-Forest Knolls?
It is all handled securely through RVezy, so there is no cash hand-off at the campground gate. You pay for your booking via the RVezy platform, and a refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV value and protection level you choose). The deposit is released after your trip ends, assuming no damage claims. Pro tip: do a thorough walkthrough video with your host at pickup AND dropoff, noting any existing dings on tires, slide-outs, and the awning. It is the best way to ensure your full deposit comes back quickly after your Lagunitas-Forest Knolls RV trip.
