Campgrounds and RV parks near Maxwell, CA

Fishing is the dominant draw. The Sacramento River near Colusa is one of the finest fishing stretches in California, with king salmon, steelhead, rainbow trout, and striped bass. Loveys Landing RV Park and Marina provides direct river and boat access for anglers and water-sports users. West of I-5, East Park Reservoir has a thriving population of warm-water fish including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill, with ideal bass fishing in the autumn months, plus Mendocino National Forest beyond it for hiking. Clear Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake within California, is roughly an hour west and supports bass fishing, swimming, kayaking, and waterskiing. The Sacramento River is on a major migratory route for birds of the Pacific flyway, with the Colusa and Sacramento National Wildlife Refuges hosting peak waterfowl numbers in fall and winter.

Summers in Colusa are sweltering, arid, and mostly clear, while winters are cold, wet, and partly cloudy. July and August routinely reach the mid-90s Fahrenheit with overnight lows in the low 60s, and rainfall is essentially zero. RVers should plan for shade, generator-friendly sites, and hookups that can support continuous air conditioning. Spring, from March through May, is the most comfortable window: daytime highs in the 60s and 70s, wildflowers in the coastal hills west of Maxwell, and active spring runs of striped bass on the Sacramento River. Fall cools after September and brings the headline fall salmon run on the river, along with peak waterfowl arrivals at the Colusa-area refuges. Winter is mild but wet by California standards, with daytime highs in the low 50s, frequent valley fog, and most of the year's rainfall concentrated in the cool months, with January averaging about 106 mm. East Park Reservoir's day-use season runs April through October, weather permitting, so confirm openings before a winter trip.

Expect a working-agricultural landscape: rice fields, almond orchards, levee roads, and small farm towns rather than a manicured resort scene. Private RV parks near Maxwell tend toward simple, family-run operations with full hookups, gravel or grass pads, and on-site fishing or river access; amenities like Wi-Fi and laundry can be limited, so plan accordingly. Colusa-Sacramento River SRA has 14 developed campsites that can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs up to 27 feet long, with drinking water, flush toilets, hot-water showers, and a dump station. Clear Lake State Park sites can fit a maximum camper or trailer length of 35 feet, with no electrical or water hookups. Cell service is good in the area along the I-5 corridor and patchier in the coastal hills.
