Camping near Mendocino, California
Mendocino sits on a rugged stretch of California's North Coast, with the village perched on headlands above the Pacific and Highway 1 threading past state parks, river coves, and redwood canyons. Most RV-friendly camping is concentrated within a ten-mile radius along this corridor. Russian Gulch State Park lies approximately two miles north of the town of Mendocino along Highway 1, combining a leafy canyon with windswept headlands and rocky coastline. Just south, Highland Meadows at Van Damme State Park sits on a ridge above the Little River, with additional sites tucked along the river itself. Caspar Beach RV Park and Campground occupies a cove between Mendocino and Fort Bragg, directly across the road from the beach. Further south, Albion River Campground and Albion River Campground & Marina sit on the Albion Cove where the river meets the Pacific.
The area suits travelers who want forest privacy, ocean access, or full-hookup convenience, often within the same trip.
Things to do near Mendocino
The Mendocino coast is built around the meeting of forest and ocean. Russian Gulch State Park draws hikers to a 36-foot waterfall set among redwoods and ferns, and to the Devil's Punchbowl, a collapsed sea cave on the headlands. The park combines nearly 1.5 miles of windswept ocean frontage with a three-mile leafy canyon leading to the waterfall, with trails open to hiking, biking, and horses. Van Damme State Park visitors enjoy the beach set in a protected cove, scuba diving, abalone fishing, kayaking, hiking, and sight-seeing, plus inland trails up the Little River canyon. Albion River Campground & Marina is a base for fishing, crabbing, abalone diving, and kayaking the calm river or open ocean. The village of Mendocino, the Mendocino Headlands, Point Cabrillo Light Station, and Glass Beach in Fort Bragg are short drives from any of the campgrounds.

Mendocino has a cool, marine-influenced climate with no real summer heat and a wet winter. The best time of year to visit Mendocino is May to October, when rainfall is minimal and skies are clearest. July and August bring the largest crowds, while May, June, September, and October balance good weather with more availability. Coastal fog is common on summer mornings and often burns off by midday.
Reservation windows reflect the season. Russian Gulch closes for the winter, opens in May with reservations available through Labor Day; outside that window the campground is first-come, first-served when open. Van Damme is open all year and reservable year-round through ReserveCalifornia. Albion River Campground & Marina accepts drop-ins but strongly recommends reservations during the busy summer months and holiday weekends.
Winter brings the heaviest rain in December and January, occasional storm closures, and short days, but it is also when gray whales migrate past the coast.
How to book a campsite near Mendocino
California State Park sites at Russian Gulch and Van Damme are booked through ReserveCalifornia, either online at reservecalifornia.com or by calling 1-800-444-7275. The public can reserve campsites and lodging six months in advance from the current date, and coastal sites for summer weekends typically fill quickly once they release. Russian Gulch horse camp reservations can be made by calling 707-937-5804. Albion River Campground & Marina and Caspar Beach RV Park and Campground are privately operated and booked directly through each property, by phone or through their online systems. For peak-season weekends from June through Labor Day, plan to book several months ahead, especially for full-hookup sites and waterfront spots. Midweek stays and shoulder-season dates in May, late September, and October usually offer more flexibility.
What to expect at Mendocino-area campgrounds
State park campgrounds along this coast tend to be forested and shaded, with sites set among redwoods and coastal pines. Russian Gulch can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs up to 24 feet, with drinking water, flush toilets and showers, plus picnic tables, food lockers, and fire rings. Van Damme offers 68 campsites split between Little River sites and the higher Highland Meadow area, with picnic tables, fire rings with grills, food lockers, and gravel driveways, and RV capacity up to about 35 feet. Caspar Beach RV Park and Campground is the most full-service option, with full-hookup sites, water and electric sites, standard and tent sites, cabins, laundry, showers, a store, and WiFi. Albion River Campground & Marina offers a mix of full and partial hookups plus on-site RV rentals and dock slips. Expect damp ground, cool nights, and abundant wildlife including banana slugs in the redwood canyons.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Mendocino, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Mendocino, CA?
Great news: RV rental in Mendocino is one of the most affordable ways to experience this stretch of the Northern California coast. On RVezy, you'll typically find campervans starting around $95 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275 per night, and travel trailers from $85 to $175 per night, with prices shifting based on season and rig size. To find a cheap RV rental in Mendocino, aim for shoulder months like late April, May, or October when summer crowds thin out but the coast is still gorgeous. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and compare mileage allowances side by side. Bundling a 5 to 7 night trip often unlocks a weekly discount that hosts set directly on their listings.
visitmendocino.com/plan-your-trip/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Mendocino?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular Class C driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Mendocino for nearly every motorhome, campervan, or trailer on RVezy. California allows you to drive any housecar up to 40 feet on a standard license, and almost every rig you'll see on the platform falls well under that limit. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the booking process, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit and you're all set to roll up Highway 1 toward Fort Bragg and the redwoods.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/driver-license-classes/What protection and roadside coverage comes with my Mendocino RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Mendocino through RVezy includes a renter protection plan that covers most damages to the vehicle, plus 24/7 roadside assistance built right in. That means if you get a flat on Highway 1 north of Caspar or need a tow on the winding stretch near Leggett, help is one call away, day or night. During booking, you'll choose the protection level that fits your comfort, with different tiers available depending on how much peace of mind you want. The plan removes the financial worry so you can focus on tide pools, redwood hikes, and that first sip of Anderson Valley pinot.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Mendocino RV trip?
Booking is low risk because RVezy, not the host, manages the cancellation policy across every reservation. There's a money-back grace period right after you book, plus additional flexibility based on how far out your trip start date is. Hosts don't set their own cancellation rules, so you'll get the same fair, transparent policy whether you book a campervan rental in Mendocino or a fifth wheel in Fort Bragg. The full details live on the RVezy Help Center. If anything changes, message RVezy support and they'll help you sort it out before your trip even begins.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Mendocino RV trip?
Absolutely, and Mendocino is one of the most dog-loving stretches of the California coast. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to find a pet-friendly RV rental in Mendocino, and you'll see dozens of motorhomes and trailers ready for your four-legged co-pilot. Big River Beach right at the south edge of Mendocino village allows leashed dogs on the sand, and MacKerricher State Park to the north has miles of beachfront and a paved coastal trail that's perfect for morning walks. Caspar Beach RV Park and Pomo RV Park & Campground both welcome dogs (Pomo charges a small pet fee). Pro tip: pack a towel by the door, because foggy mornings mean sandy paws.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mendocino%2C%20CaliforniaCan my Mendocino RV rental be delivered to a campground?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to do your first Mendocino RV trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Mendocino directly to Russian Gulch State Park, Van Damme State Park, MacKerricher State Park, Caspar Beach RV Park, or even a private property along Highway 1. Your host arrives, levels the rig, hooks up water and power if available, and walks you through every system so you're not figuring it out alone. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see options, then message the host with your campground name and dates. Pro tip: delivery is gold if you're flying into San Francisco or Santa Rosa and don't want to drive a motorhome up the twisty coast.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mendocino%2C%20CaliforniaHow far can I drive from Mendocino in a week?
You can cover a lot of legendary coast in a week. From Mendocino, an easy RV road trip from Mendocino includes Fort Bragg (10 miles north, home of Glass Beach and the Skunk Train), the Anderson Valley wine region via Highway 128 (about 35 miles southeast), Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt Redwoods State Park (about 110 miles north on US-101), Point Reyes National Seashore (about 150 miles south), and even San Francisco (about 155 miles south). Hosts list their mileage policy on each listing, and you can filter for RV rental with unlimited mileage if you're planning to roam. Pro tip: build in slow days because Highway 1 averages 35 mph along the coast.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mendocino%2C%20CaliforniaWhere are the best campgrounds near Mendocino for an RV?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Mendocino for RV camping include Russian Gulch State Park (2 miles north, forested sites for rigs up to 24 feet with hot showers), Van Damme State Park (2 miles south, with a dump station and sites accommodating rigs up to about 35 feet), MacKerricher State Park (13 miles north near Fort Bragg with beach access), Caspar Beach RV Park (oceanfront with full hookups), and Pomo RV Park & Campground in Fort Bragg (full hookups on 17 acres). Reserve state park sites at ReserveCalifornia up to six months ahead, especially for July and August weekends. Pro tip: midweek stays in June often have open sites even on short notice.
reservecalifornia.com/When is the best time to visit Mendocino in an RV?
Mendocino is a year-round destination, but the sweet spot is May through October when daytime highs run 60 to 72 degrees and rainfall is minimal. July and August are the warmest and busiest, with the Mendocino Music Festival and packed campgrounds. September and October are the local insider's choice: warmer afternoons that can reach the upper 70s, fewer crowds, and clearer skies after the summer fog burns off. Winter is whale-watching season from December through April with gray whale migrations right off the headlands, plus dramatic Pacific storms. Pro tip: book your RV camping in Mendocino for the second week of September and you'll get the best of everything.
weather.gov/eka/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Mendocino?
You've got this, and Mendocino is a friendlier place to start than people think if you pick the right rig. For first time renting an RV here, choose a campervan or a Class C under 25 feet, which handles Highway 1's curves much better than a 35-foot Class A. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering hookups, the propane system, slide-outs, dump procedures, and driving tips, plus they're a text away during your trip. Take the inland US-101 route through Willits and then Highway 20 west to Fort Bragg if a twisty coastal drive feels intimidating; it's the local trick for bigger rigs. Pro tip: practice a few turns in an empty Fort Bragg parking lot before you head south on Highway 1.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-handbook/What happens if something goes wrong with the RV on my trip?
Help is built in. Every RVezy booking that includes a protection plan comes with 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you get a flat near Elk, a dead battery at MacKerricher, or a slideout that won't retract at Caspar Beach RV Park, you can call any time and get a real person on the line. Your host is also your first line of support; most respond within minutes by text and many live nearby, so they can talk you through a quick fix. Cell service drops out on parts of Highway 1 north of Westport and inside Russian Gulch, so save the RVezy support number to your phone before you leave town. Pro tip: download offline maps for the Mendocino coast in case you lose signal.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Mendocino RV rental out of state or into Canada?
You've got options. Most RVezy hosts in Mendocino are happy to let you cruise into Oregon along US-101 toward Brookings and Crater Lake, or south through Big Sur and Los Angeles, as long as you discuss the route during booking. Canada trips can be allowed depending on the host and the insurance terms on the listing, so message the owner directly from the listing page before you book. One important note: travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend across that border. Pro tip: a classic 10 day loop from Mendocino runs north to the Oregon Dunes and back through the redwoods on US-101, all without leaving the West Coast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Mendocino RV trip?
Plan ahead because California typically has the highest pump prices in the country, with regular unleaded often running around $5 to $6 per gallon and coastal Mendocino County often 20 to 40 cents above the state average. A Class C motorhome typically gets 8 to 10 miles per gallon, while a campervan can stretch to 16 to 20 mpg. For a 500 mile loop (think Mendocino to Avenue of the Giants and back), budget roughly $250 to $400 in fuel for a Class C. Fill up in Ukiah or Willits on US-101 where prices are notably cheaper than in Mendocino village or Fort Bragg. Pro tip: GasBuddy will save you real money on this coast.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Mendocino?
For summer, book early; for shoulder season, you've got more breathing room. California State Parks releases reservations through ReserveCalifornia exactly six months in advance, and popular spots like Russian Gulch, Van Damme, and MacKerricher fill within minutes for July and August weekends. Set a calendar reminder for 8 a.m. on the day your dates open. Private parks like Caspar Beach RV Park, Pomo RV Park, and Manchester Beach/Mendocino Coast KOA typically take reservations directly through their websites and have more last-minute availability. Pro tip: for a spontaneous Mendocino RV trip in May or October, you can often snag a same-week site at Van Damme State Park midweek, especially Sunday through Wednesday nights.
reservecalifornia.com/What are driving conditions like on Highway 1 around Mendocino?
Beautiful, but pick the right rig and you'll love it. Highway 1 north of San Francisco hugs cliffs with tight curves, narrow lanes in spots, and posted speeds as low as 15 mph on switchbacks, so smaller RVs (under 25 feet) handle it best. The stretch from Leggett to Fort Bragg and down past Mendocino village is scenic and manageable for most Class C motorhomes and campervans driven slowly with turnouts used generously. Caltrans regularly posts one-way controlled traffic north of Point Arena and around Westport due to rock slides, so check the Caltrans QuickMap before you roll. Pro tip: bigger rigs should take US-101 to Willits, then Highway 20 west into Fort Bragg, which is the local big-rig route.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at Mendocino campgrounds?
You'll find a great mix. State park campgrounds like Russian Gulch and Van Damme offer flush toilets, hot showers, picnic tables, fire rings, food lockers, and dump stations (Van Damme has one), but no individual hookups, so you'll run on your RV's batteries and freshwater tank. For full hookups (water, electric, sewer) plus Wi-Fi and laundry, head to Caspar Beach RV Park, Pomo RV Park & Campground in Fort Bragg, or Manchester Beach/Mendocino Coast KOA. You can fill freshwater at most private parks and dump at Van Damme, Pomo, or the KOA. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot freshwater hose and a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter, because Mendocino-area hookup pedestals vary between sites.
reservecalifornia.com/What equipment and amenities come with a typical Mendocino RV rental?
You'll be surprised how dialed-in these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Mendocino includes a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, a queen or king bed, dinette that converts to extra sleeping, climate control, propane heat for those foggy coastal nights, fresh and gray water tanks, and seatbelts for every traveler. Many also include a generator, outdoor speakers, awning, leveling blocks, and basic kitchenware. Wi-Fi and TV vary by listing, and cell service is spotty along Highway 1, so download Netflix episodes in advance. Each RVezy listing spells out exactly what's included with photos. Pro tip: message the host about a French press or a Bluetooth speaker if those make your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mendocino%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my Mendocino RV rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize. Common add-ons when you rent an RV in Mendocino include linens and bedding packs ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, camp chairs, bikes, paddleboards, generators, and even pre-stocked firewood. Mileage policies are listed on each rig (typically 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some unlimited mileage options for longer trips). Pickup is usually at the host's location around Mendocino, Fort Bragg, or Ukiah, but delivery to a Highway 1 campground is widely offered. Walkthroughs at pickup last 30 to 60 minutes; don't rush this part. Pro tip: ask the host about a Mendocino-specific add-on like a tide-pool guidebook or a recommended winery route through Anderson Valley.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mendocino%2C%20CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It's straightforward and secure. When you book a Mendocino RV rental, you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps everything documented and protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (amount varies by listing and is shown clearly before you confirm), and it's released back to your card after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape and within mileage limits. To avoid hiccups, do a walkthrough video at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's fueling and dump-station instructions, and message through the app for a clear record. Pro tip: book a few weeks ahead so your deposit hold doesn't bump into other vacation charges.
