Things to do around Monte Rio

The Russian River is the main draw. Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, on the same access road as Austin Creek, protects old-growth coast redwoods and easy interpretive trails. A truly excellent rental experience. The host was accommodating on pickup time, it was clean, everything worked, and it was fully equipped. Dishes, cookware, bedding, camping chairs, games, movies, and so many miscellaneous items. When we thought of something we needed it always turned out to be in a drawer. Dropping off was smooth and easy. We've camped for years with an A-frame trailer and this was our first time with a camping van. We love our A-frame but now we want one just like Ms. Retro.

Fantastic trip with Miss Retro! We rented Miss Retro for three nights during Thanksgiving to camp with friends in Olema CA - everything g was great! The van is well equipped for two, with a generous sized bed and well set up kitchen. The van was cozy for sleeping and hanging out and we prepped gravy and potatoes on the inside stove burners / Maria and Isaac were great hosts, communicative, friendly and everything was as described.

Reservation systems differ by operator. State park sites at Wrights Beach and Bullfrog Pond are booked through ReserveCalifornia. Wrights Beach is open year-round, with reservations available through ReserveCalifornia 48 hours to 6 months in advance, and within 48 hours of arrival sites are first-come, first-served at the kiosk. Visitors can reserve highly sought-after campsites and lodging six months in advance from the current date, with inventory becoming available each day for a period of six months in advance, so booking right at the 6-month mark is the best strategy for oceanfront sites. Private parks use their own systems. Casini Ranch's reservations office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily, and reservations can be made either online or by calling 1-800-451-8400. Duncans Mills Campground and Schoolhouse Canyon Campground are smaller private operations that take bookings directly through their own offices rather than a central portal.

Casini Ranch Family Campground accommodates RVs up to 60 feet with full hookups alongside tent sites and walk-in options on 40 acres along the Russian River. State parks do not match that. All camping spots at Austin Creek are small with no hookups, RVs under 20 feet are welcome, and access is via a winding mountain road where trailers and towed vehicles are prohibited. Wrights Beach accepts tents, RVs, and trailers but has no hookups, and site lengths vary, so check the specific site when booking. Amenities also differ. Unfortunately there are no shower facilities available at Bullfrog Pond, though there are vault toilets, but no showers available, and water is available at the campground. Cell service is patchy in the redwoods and along the coast, so download maps before arrival.
