Camping near Morro Bay, California
Morro Bay sits on California's Central Coast in San Luis Obispo County, anchored by the 576-foot volcanic plug of Morro Rock and a protected estuary that draws RV travelers year-round. The town is roughly 20 minutes northwest of San Luis Obispo and serves as a base for exploring Highway 1, Montaña de Oro State Park, and Cayucos.
Options for RV renters cluster around two zones: state-run campgrounds inside Morro Bay State Park and Morro Strand State Beach, and private parks closer to town. Morro Bay State Park sits next to the marina, the golf course, and the Museum of Natural History, with sites for tents and RVs up to 35 feet plus a smaller block of hookup sites. Morro Strand State Beach runs parallel to the ocean north of town with sites that step right onto the sand. Private options nearby include Silver City RV Park and MH Resort, Morro Strand RV Park, Morro Dunes RV Park, and Bay Pines Travel Trailer Park, which typically offer full hookups and longer rig access than the state parks.
Things to do around Morro Bay
Morro Rock dominates the skyline and anchors the harbor, where kayak and paddleboard rentals launch into the bay's calm water and the estuary's salt marsh, home to sea otters, harbor seals, and a wide variety of bird species. The Embarcadero has seafood restaurants, shops, and boat tours.
Inside Morro Bay State Park, families can ride the bike paths, play the 18-hole public golf course, and visit the Museum of Natural History. About ten miles south, Montaña de Oro State Park covers thousands of acres of cliffs, coves, and trails, including the easy Bluff Trail and the more demanding Valencia Peak climb. Tidepools at Corallina Cove and Hazard Canyon Reef are productive at low tide. Whale watching peaks in winter and early spring for gray whales and from late spring through fall for humpbacks.

Morro Bay has a mild marine climate, so camping is feasible year-round, but each season has trade-offs for RV travelers. Summer is peak season: weather is dry, crowds are heaviest, and state-park sites typically need to be booked months ahead. Coastal fog and afternoon wind are routine, with temperatures cooler than inland California, so layers and a windbreak help.
Early fall is often the warmest and clearest stretch, with smaller crowds and easier reservations. Late fall through winter brings most of the year's rain, concentrated from late November through March, and shorter days, though daytime temperatures stay mild. Winter and spring are the best windows for spotting sea otters and migrating gray whales, and spring brings wildflower blooms across Montaña de Oro's hills. Snowy plover nesting season runs from early spring into early fall, which closes parts of the beach to dogs and foot traffic in marked zones. Bird watching is strongest in late winter through early summer.

How to book a campground near Morro Bay
Reservations at Morro Bay State Park and Morro Strand State Beach are handled through ReserveCalifornia, online at reservecalifornia.com or by phone at 1-800-444-7275 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Pacific Time. The standard booking window opens up to six months in advance on a rolling basis, with new inventory released daily at 8 a.m. Pacific. Morro Bay State Park is also part of California State Parks' Reservation Drawing for high-demand sites, which lets visitors apply up to eight months out.
For summer weekends and holidays, booking the day the six-month window opens is the most reliable strategy. Hookup sites are limited at both state parks, so RV renters who need full hookups should compare Morro Strand's hookup row against private parks such as Silver City RV Park and MH Resort, Morro Dunes RV Park, Morro Strand RV Park, or Bay Pines Travel Trailer Park, which book directly through the operator.
What to expect at Morro Bay campgrounds
RV length limits matter here. Morro Bay State Park caps RVs at 35 feet, and only a subset of sites have water and electric hookups. Morro Strand State Beach can take rigs up to 40 feet on the hookup sites, while standard non-hookup sites are limited to about 24 feet. Both state parks have flush toilets, and Morro Bay State Park has a dump station and token-operated showers. Morro Strand has no showers on site, so campers use the showers at the Morro Bay State Park campground with their registration receipt.
Sites at Morro Strand sit close together in a paved-loop layout next to the beach, with little shade or privacy. Wind typically picks up in the afternoon and fog is common even in summer. Dogs are allowed on leash in campgrounds and on park roads but are restricted from most trails and beaches.
