Camping near Occidental, California
Occidental sits in the redwood-covered hills of western Sonoma County, roughly halfway between the Russian River and the Sonoma Coast. The village itself has no campground, but RV travelers have strong options within a 15 to 30 minute drive in three directions: river camping along the Russian River near Forestville, Guerneville, and Duncans Mills; coastal camping near Bodega Bay; and a mix of private and county-run parks in between.
The closest river properties include Burke's Canoe Trips in Forestville, Mirabel RV Park and Campground also in Forestville, and Schoolhouse Canyon Campground east of Guerneville. Casini Ranch Family Campground sits farther downstream near Duncans Mills, closer to the coast. Chanslor Guest Ranch offers ranch-style camping just north of Bodega Bay. Together these cover tent sites under redwoods, full and partial hookup RV sites, cabins, and ocean-view ranch land, giving renters flexibility on terrain, hookups, and proximity to the coast or the river.
Things to do near Occidental
The Russian River is the dominant attraction. Burke's offers a ten mile self-guided canoe and kayak trip through the redwoods from Forestville to Guerneville, taking about three and a half hours of actual paddling time, with a return shuttle included. Casini Ranch rents canoes, kayaks, bikes, paddle boards, and pedal carts, and runs family activities such as hayrides and movies. Chanslor Ranch offers horseback riding on a working ranch near the coast, surrounded by state parks and beaches. Day trips from any of these basecamps include Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, Bodega Head for whale watching and tidepools, Sonoma Coast State Park beaches, and tasting rooms throughout the Russian River wine region.

Western Sonoma County has a Mediterranean climate with dry, warm summers and wet, mild winters. Summer is the core RV season. Burke's opens for the season on Memorial weekend and runs seven days a week thereafter for canoe trips, kayak trips, and overnight camping through mid October. Schoolhouse Canyon traditionally opens around Memorial Day weekend and operates through the warm season. Casini Ranch operates year-round, making it one of the few full-service options outside summer.
Fall brings warm days, cool nights, and the wine country harvest, with fewer crowds after Labor Day. Winter is the rainy season; the Russian River can rise quickly during atmospheric river events and low-lying riverside sites occasionally flood, so campers booking November through March should check site location and current river forecasts. Spring sees wildflowers and green hills, with steadier weather by April, though cold fog and rain are still common along the coast through May.

Andre was easy to deal with and took the time to show me everything I needed to know about the trailer. The trailer was clean, well maintained and met my needs for dry camping with friends!
Mary H. - Oct 2026
Had a great experience with Andre. He communicated every day and was very accommodating. This trailer was cleaned and setup by the time we arrived, which made our vacation smooth and relaxing.

A truly excellent rental experience. The host was accommodating on pickup time, it was clean, everything worked, and it was fully equipped. Dishes, cookware, bedding, camping chairs, games, movies, and so many miscellaneous items. When we thought of something we needed it always turned out to be in a drawer. Dropping off was smooth and easy. We've camped for years with an A-frame trailer and this was our first time with a camping van. We love our A-frame but now we want one just like Ms. Retro.
Randall S. - Jun 2026
Fantastic trip with Miss Retro! We rented Miss Retro for three nights during Thanksgiving to camp with friends in Olema CA - everything g was great! The van is well equipped for two, with a generous sized bed and well set up kitchen. The van was cozy for sleeping and hanging out and we prepped gravy and potatoes on the inside stove burners / Maria and Isaac were great hosts, communicative, friendly and everything was as described.

How to book near Occidental
Reservation systems vary by property. Mirabel RV Park takes bookings by phone through its office, typically with a two-night minimum on weekends and three nights on holiday weekends. Schoolhouse Canyon does not use a standard reservation network; bookings are arranged by leaving a voicemail at the campground and waiting for a callback, and shorter one-night stays are generally first-come, first-served. Casini Ranch books online and by phone through its own reservations desk and is open year-round. For nearby coastal options run by Sonoma County Regional Parks, starting May 1, 2025 reservations are available up to six months in advance, instead of 12 months. Summer weekends and holidays at all of these parks fill weeks to months ahead, so book as early as plans allow.
What to expect near Occidental
Sites along the river sit under redwoods, which means shade, soft duff underfoot, and limited solar charging. Hookups are mixed: Casini Ranch offers full and partial hookup RV sites alongside tent sites and rental cabins, while Mirabel has shaded RV sites and seasonal tent camping along the river and creek. Schoolhouse Canyon is tent-focused, with generators and televisions not permitted, though a few of the sites work well for small RVs or trailers. Cell coverage is spotty in the canyons and along River Road, so download maps and reservations in advance. Roads into Occidental, Cazadero, and the coast are narrow and winding, with low overhead branches in places, so plan routes for longer rigs accordingly.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Occidental, CA?
RV rental in Occidental, CA is often more affordable than booking hotels in Sonoma wine country. On RVezy you'll typically find travel trailers from around $90 to $175 per night, campervans in the $150 to $250 range, and larger Class C motorhomes between $200 and $400 per night, with rates climbing during peak season from June through September. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to lock in the best-priced listings before Sonoma Coast travelers grab them.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Occidental,%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Occidental?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Occidental, with no special RV endorsement or commercial driver's license (CDL) required in California, even for the larger Class A motorhomes you'll see on the platform. You'll need to be at least 25 years old and have a valid driver's license, which RVezy verifies during the booking process. Visiting from abroad? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) before you arrive, available from your home country's auto association. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the paperwork comes together so they can focus on the redwoods.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental in Occidental covered by insurance and protection?
Every RVezy booking in Occidental includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Bohemian Highway with real peace of mind. Renters choose their coverage level at checkout (not the host), so you can pick the option that fits how far you're roaming, whether that's a quiet weekend in the redwoods or a longer Sonoma County loop. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the RV during your trip and is backed by RVezy's customer support team, setting you up for a low-stress motorhome rental Occidental experience from pickup to drop-off.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Occidental RV trip plans change?
Booking an RV rental in Occidental is lower risk than you might expect because RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, which provides a clear and consistent process for every booking. If your Sonoma Coast plans shift or a family situation comes up, you'll follow the standard RVezy cancellation steps rather than guessing per listing. Refund outcomes depend on how far in advance of your trip you cancel, so reach out to RVezy support if anything changes. Pro tip: book early to lock in prime summer dates, then revisit your plans as the trip gets closer with confidence.

Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Occidental options are easy to find thanks to filters on RVezy that show only listings where dogs are welcome. Sonoma County is one of the most dog-friendly corners of California, and your pup will love it here: Doran Regional Park down at Bodega Bay has a leashed dog-friendly beach about 25 minutes from Occidental, and Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve allows leashed dogs in the picnic and parking areas. Many local wineries in Sebastopol and Healdsburg even welcome well-behaved dogs on outdoor patios. Message the host before booking to share your dog's size and breed and confirm any pet fee, then pack a leash, a towel for sandy paws, and you're ready.
parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/visit/find-a-park/doran-regional-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or vacation rental near Occidental?
Yes, RV delivery in Occidental is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who don't want to drive a motorhome down the winding Bohemian Highway or Coleman Valley Road. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your RV at popular spots like Bodega Dunes Campground, Casini Ranch Family Campground along the Russian River, or even a friend's driveway in Sebastopol or Guerneville. They'll level the rig, connect water, power, and sewer where available, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter when searching, message the host with your destination address, and you'll get a delivery quote based on distance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106494-What-is-RV-deliveryHow far can I travel on an Occidental RV trip with the included mileage?
You can absolutely build a great Occidental RV trip within most hosts' standard mileage allowances, which typically range from 100 to 150 free miles per day, and many listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage if you're planning a bigger loop. From Occidental, popular drives are short and scenic: Bodega Bay is about 14 miles west, Guerneville and Armstrong Redwoods sit roughly 10 miles north, Healdsburg wine country is around 25 miles northeast, and Point Reyes National Seashore is a beautiful 45-mile coastal drive south. Heading further afield, San Francisco is about 75 miles and the Mendocino coast about 110 miles. Check each listing's mileage policy and add-on rate for extra miles before you book.
nps.gov/pore/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat are the best campgrounds near Occidental for RV camping?
The best campgrounds near Occidental cover everything from coastal dunes to redwood groves, all within a 30-minute drive. Bodega Dunes Campground in Sonoma Coast State Park has nearly 100 sites tucked behind tall dunes, just steps from the beach. Casini Ranch Family Campground in Duncans Mills offers full hookup RV sites right on the Russian River, perfect for swimming and kayaking. Wright's Beach Campground delivers oceanfront sites with dramatic Pacific views, and Schoolhouse Canyon Campground near Guerneville is shaded by towering redwoods along Austin Creek. For something inland, Spring Lake Regional Park in Santa Rosa has RV-friendly sites about 30 minutes east. Book early for summer weekends, they often sell out months ahead.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=451When is the best time of year to plan RV camping Occidental adventures?
Late spring and early fall are the sweet spot for RV camping Occidental trips, with September and October bringing warm, dry days in the upper 70s, golden vineyards ready for harvest, and far fewer crowds than peak summer. Summer (June through August) is the warmest stretch, with July highs averaging around 78°F and cool 50°F nights, perfect for redwood hikes and Russian River paddling, though coastal mornings often bring thick fog until mid-day. Winters are mild but wet, with January highs around 54°F and most of Occidental's 42 inches of annual rain falling between November and March. Pro tip: book a midweek October trip and you'll likely have Bodega Dunes nearly to yourself.
weather.gov/mtr/I've never driven an RV before, is renting in Occidental beginner-friendly?
Yes, first time renting an RV in Occidental is genuinely doable, and a lot of guests pick this area precisely because they can stay close to base. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the propane, water, slide-outs, leveling, and dump procedures, and you can text them throughout your trip if something's confusing. To make life even easier, choose a smaller travel trailer or Class C, and request delivery so the host parks and sets up the RV for you. Stick to wider roads like Highway 116 toward Guerneville rather than the tighter Coleman Valley Road on day one. By night two you'll feel like a pro.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-handbook/What happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my Occidental RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy rental in Occidental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Bohemian Highway, a dead battery at Bodega Dunes, or a tow off Coleman Valley Road is a single phone call away. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip if you need help reaching your host or sorting out a campground issue. Save the roadside number to your phone before you leave the pickup location, snap a photo of the RV's make, model, and license plate, and you'll be covered for anything Sonoma County throws your way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106834-Roadside-assistance-informationCan I take an RV road trip from Occidental to Oregon or across state lines?
Yes, an RV road trip from Occidental can cross state lines, and your RVezy protection plan and roadside assistance travel with you throughout the United States. Popular multi-state routes from here include heading north up Highway 101 through the Avenue of the Giants to the Oregon Coast (about 7 hours to Brookings, OR), east through Lake Tahoe (about 4 hours) and into Nevada, or south along Highway 1 toward Big Sur and beyond. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but cross-border travel into Canada can be discussed with the host in advance. Message your host before booking with your planned route so everyone's aligned on mileage and timing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV rental in Sonoma County?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your Occidental RV trip budget, but the good news is distances around Sonoma County are short. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervans average 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. California gas prices run higher than the national average, typically $4.50 to $5.50 per gallon in West Sonoma County, with the cheapest stations along Highway 116 in Sebastopol and Cotati rather than the small pumps in Monte Rio or Bodega Bay. For a typical 4-day, 200-mile loop around Sonoma Coast and the Russian River in a Class C, plan on roughly $100 to $130 in fuel.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book campgrounds near Occidental?
For the best campgrounds near Occidental, especially state park sites at Bodega Dunes and Wright's Beach, book six months in advance through ReserveCalifornia, the official California State Parks reservation system, which opens reservations on a six-month rolling window. Summer weekends and holidays disappear within minutes of release. Private campgrounds like Casini Ranch Family Campground take direct reservations and often have a bit more flexibility, but still aim for 2 to 3 months out for July and August. Sonoma County Regional Parks like Doran and Spring Lake use a separate booking system. Pro tip: if you strike out, set a ReserveCalifornia notification, cancellations pop up daily, especially in the two weeks before a weekend.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Occidental?
Driving around Occidental is scenic and very manageable once you know the lay of the land. The town sits in the redwood-shaded hills of West Sonoma County at about 1,000 feet of elevation, so expect narrow, winding two-lane roads like Bohemian Highway, Coleman Valley Road, and Joy Road, with occasional steep grades and tight curves. Highway 116 is the main wider artery and is the easiest way in and out with a larger motorhome. Coastal fog is common from June through August, especially in the mornings, so use low beams and take your time. Watch for cyclists on weekend mornings and deer near dawn and dusk. Take it slow and the drive becomes part of the magic.
dot.ca.gov/travelWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Occidental?
Campgrounds near Occidental run the full range from rustic to full-service, so you can match the site to your RV. Casini Ranch Family Campground on the Russian River offers full hookups (water, electric, and sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, a camp store, and a dump station. Bodega Dunes and Wright's Beach in Sonoma Coast State Park have flush toilets, potable water fill stations, and dump stations but no hookups at most sites, so plan to boondock with your tanks. Spring Lake Regional Park has 30-amp electric and water at many RV sites. The closest year-round dump stations are at Casini Ranch and Bodega Dunes. Top off your fresh water tank in Sebastopol or Guerneville before heading to a coastal park.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=451What features and amenities come with RV rentals in Occidental?
RVs listed in Occidental are real owners' personal vehicles, so they tend to be well-loved and well-equipped. Expect a queen or king bed, plus convertible dinettes and bunks (sleeps counts range from 2 in a campervan to 8+ in a Class C or fifth wheel), a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, and cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, a furnace, and usually a TV. Many listings include a generator, outdoor speakers, and outdoor chairs, ideal for redwood evenings. Wi-Fi varies, cell signal is patchy in the coastal canyons, so download maps and entertainment ahead of time. Filter by sleeps, amenities, and RV type on RVezy to match your exact crew.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-registration/new-registration/recreational-vehicles/What add-ons and pickup options are popular for an Occidental campervan rental?
Campervan rental Occidental listings often come with great add-ons that make a short Sonoma trip even easier. Popular extras include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, generators, BBQs, bike racks, paddleboards, and pet packages, all priced by the host. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Sebastopol, Santa Rosa, Forestville, or Occidental itself, and many hosts offer delivery to your campground or vacation rental for a per-mile fee. Most hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per day, with extra miles billed at $0.30 to $0.50. Pro tip: ask about a Sonoma Coast prep package, some hosts include firewood, a beach chair, and a tide chart.
sonomacounty.ca.gov/visitHow does payment and the security deposit work for an Occidental RV rental?
Payment for your RV rental in Occidental runs entirely through RVezy's secure checkout, so you never hand cash or card details directly to the host. You'll pay the booking total (nightly rate, fees, protection, and any add-ons) with a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is handled separately from the booking payment and is released after drop-off, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition as pickup, on time, and with the agreed-upon fuel level and mileage. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video of the interior and exterior at pickup and drop-off, it's the easiest way to keep your full deposit.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there any insider tips for an Occidental RV trip first-timers should know?
Here's a local secret: most visitors race to Bodega Bay or the Russian River, but Occidental itself is worth a slow evening. Park your rig at a nearby campground, then walk into the village for a classic Italian family-style dinner at the historic Union Hotel or Negri's, both serving locals since the 1800s. On Friday evenings in summer, the Occidental Farmers Market fills the town center with live music and Sonoma County produce. From your campground base, plan one coast day (Goat Rock and Shell Beach), one redwood day (Armstrong Redwoods and Pomo Canyon hike), and one wine day (Iron Horse Vineyards is just down the road). That's the perfect Sonoma family RV trip Occidental rhythm.
