Campgrounds and RV parks near Pacific Grove, CA

Pacific Grove is known as Butterfly Town, USA, with protected overwintering monarch populations at the Monarch Grove Sanctuary and Point Pinos Lighthouse, the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast. Asilomar State Beach has tide pools and walking paths along the open Pacific, while Lovers Point Park on Monterey Bay has calmer water, a small beach, and recreational facilities suited to families. The Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row sit just a short drive away, and 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach charges a per-vehicle fee, with walkers and bicyclists admitted free. The paved Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail runs along the shore, with Pacific Grove's stretch passing harbor seals and sea otters offshore. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and Carmel-by-the-Sea lie a short drive south.

The peninsula has a mild marine climate with two clear booking seasons. June through August is the busiest tourism season in Pacific Grove, and peninsula campgrounds and state-park sites fill weeks ahead for summer weekends and holidays. Coastal fog is common on summer mornings and often burns off by midday; inland sites near Salinas tend to be sunnier and warmer. Fall brings the area's most stable, clear weather and remains popular through October. Monarchs cluster at the Monarch Grove Sanctuary from mid-October through mid-February, with peak numbers from November into January, drawing winter visitors to Pacific Grove specifically. Whale-watching from Monterey Bay is productive in winter and spring. Winter is the wet season; rain arrives in storm cycles between long dry spells, and overnight lows near the coast stay above freezing. At Sunset State Beach, the Dunes and Pine Hollow loops run on first-come, first-served status from November through February, leaving South Camp as the main reservable area in winter. Spring sees wildflowers along the coastal bluffs and lighter crowds before Memorial Day.

Expect cool, damp coastal mornings even in summer; daytime highs on the peninsula rarely climb out of the 60s Fahrenheit. Pack layers, a windbreaker, and a tarp or awning, since marine-layer drizzle is common. At Marina Dunes RV Park, reviews note freeway noise and smaller sites that can be challenging for larger RVs, so renters with big rigs should confirm site dimensions when booking. Sunset State Beach has no site hookups, and the closest dump station for campers is at New Brighton State Beach to the north. Dogs are not permitted on the beach itself, but are allowed in the campground on a six-foot maximum leash. Cell service is generally strong on the peninsula and patchy in the dunes and along the Big Sur coast south of Carmel. Grocery and propane resupply are easy in Monterey, Marina, and Salinas.
