Camping near Piru, California
Piru sits in eastern Ventura County along Highway 126, between the citrus groves of the Santa Clara River Valley and the southern edge of Los Padres National Forest. The town is a practical base for RV travelers who want lake recreation, foothill scenery, and quick access to the Santa Clarita corridor without staying inside Los Angeles. Lake Piru Recreation Area is tucked into the Los Padres National Forest, roughly an hour from the city.
The immediate area offers a mix of public and private campgrounds. The Olive Grove campground at Lake Piru has 234 closely grouped campsites for tents, trailers, and RVs near the lake's west shore. Private RV parks along the I-5 corridor, including Valencia Travel Village RV Resort, Castaic Lake RV Park, and Walnut RV Park, serve travelers who need full hookups and easy freeway access. To the west, Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday provides a mountain-foothill setting between Santa Paula and Ojai. Together, these options cover everything from lakefront camping to amenity-heavy resort sites suitable for big rigs and families.
Things to do around Piru
Lake Piru is the main draw. Water sports include water skiing, kayaking, and paddle boarding, and on land there are shaded picnic areas, disc golf, volleyball, and a playground. Anglers fish for bass, trout, catfish, crappie, and bluegill, and boat rentals are offered at the marina. Castaic Lake, about a half-hour east, adds a second large reservoir with swimming, sailing, and stocked fishing, although campers should check current status before booking since the campground has been closed for Hughes Fire repairs.
Families staying at Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday have on-site options including a zip line, ropes course, jumping pillow, pool, and gem mining. Six Flags Magic Mountain is roughly fifteen minutes from the Castaic-area parks, and the agricultural towns of Santa Paula, Fillmore, and Ojai are within easy day-trip range for produce stands, antique shops, and short hikes.

The Piru area has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wetter winters. Summer is the busiest stretch for lake camping and the period when shaded sites and hookups go first. Daytime heat regularly pushes into the 90s Fahrenheit, so RV renters should plan for air-conditioning runtime and confirm electric service at their site.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for tent-style camping and hiking. Spring brings green hills and the strongest wildflower color in the foothills, while fall typically delivers warm days and cool nights once the marine layer breaks.
Late summer through fall is peak wildfire season in Southern California. Public-land closures and fire restrictions are common in the surrounding forests, and recent fire activity has affected nearby parks. The campground, main launch ramp, and 24-hour parking lot at Castaic Lake have remained closed due to Hughes Fire damage repairs and hazardous conditions, so confirm status before travel. Winter is the quietest season, with occasional heavy rain days and the lowest crowd levels.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ First-Time Trailer Campers, and We’re Hooked! 🚐🏕️ We had never stayed in a trailer before, let alone rented one for camping, so we were definitely newbies! Thankfully, Oscar made the whole experience a breeze. His communication was fantastic, and he patiently answered all our questions (and trust me, we had plenty! 😂). He delivered the trailer right to our campsite, hooked everything up, leveled it, and gave us a thorough walkthrough of all the interior and exterior features. Basically, he took the guesswork out of camping so we could focus on having fun! The trailer was well-equipped with pots, pans, plates, and knives, although we didn’t even need to use them. Everything was ready to go! The kids especially loved the bunks, which were a huge hit. Best of all, they had such a great time that they’re already saying they’d camp in an RV again. That’s a parenting win in our book! 🙌😂 Oscar truly went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and taken care of. We couldn’t have asked for a better first trailer-rental experience. Would we recommend Oscar? Absolutely! Would we rent from him again? You bet! We’re already looking forward to our next adventure. Looks like Oscar has officially converted our family into RV campers! 🚐❤️

Had a great time and our trailer was perfect. Oscar was wonderful as well.

The RV was great! Had everything we needed. Arie is amazing! Picked us up and dropped us off. He was always available if we had any questions during our trip.

How to book campgrounds near Piru
Lake Piru Recreation Area is operated by the United Water Conservation District and managed through the explorelakepiru.com booking system. Reservations must be made online at least five days prior to the scheduled stay, and bookings made with less than five days notice must go through a Lake Piru guest service employee by phone. A reservation is required to camp at Lake Piru, and all reservations are charged a nonrefundable processing fee.
Castaic Lake is run by Los Angeles County, not California State Parks. Castaic Lake campsites are reserved through the County of Los Angeles online reservation system, with sites available up to 90 days in advance. Private parks including Valencia Travel Village RV Resort, Castaic Lake RV Park, Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday, and Walnut RV Park book directly through their own websites or major RV booking platforms, and weekend dates in summer typically sell out well in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Sites range from full-hookup resort pads to shaded lakeside loops. At Lake Piru, campers find level tree-shaded sites, clean restrooms, coin-operated hot showers, a fully stocked store, paved roads, and a convenient dump station, with motor homes, trailers, and truck campers welcome. Alcohol is not permitted at Lake Piru, fires are restricted to the provided campfire rings, and a two-night minimum stay applies, with three nights on holiday weekends.
Ventura Ranch KOA Holiday sits at the foot of Topa Topa, the highest peak in Ventura County, with dark skies and foothill views. Private parks along I-5 such as Valencia Travel Village RV Resort lean toward paved roads, pull-throughs, and pools, with some long-term residents on site. Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Piru, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Piru, CA?
RV rental in Piru is one of the more affordable ways to experience the Los Angeles area without big-city hotel prices. On RVezy, you'll typically find campervan rentals in Piru starting around $95 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes in the $175 to $275 range, and larger travel trailers and fifth wheels between $125 and $225 per night. Because Piru sits in Ventura County's quiet Heritage Valley, hosts here often price below comparable Los Angeles or Santa Barbara listings. Pro tip: book Sunday through Thursday nights at Lake Piru and you'll often save 20 to 30 percent versus peak summer weekends, plus you'll have the lake nearly to yourself.
visitventuraca.com/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Piru, California?
Good news: for nearly every RV rental in Piru, your regular Class C driver's license is all you need. California only requires a non-commercial Class B license for housecars (motorhomes) longer than 40 feet, and the vast majority of Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and fifth wheels on RVezy fall well under that limit. You will need to be 25 or older to book as an approved driver, and the platform handles ID verification during checkout so there is no paperwork headache at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you are set to explore the Heritage Valley.

Every RV rental in Piru booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive up Piru Canyon Road toward the lake knowing you are covered. RVezy offers multiple protection plan tiers, and you choose your coverage level during checkout based on how much peace of mind you want. The plan provides meaningful financial protection for renters, especially first-timers navigating Highway 126 or the winding road up to Lake Piru Recreation Area. Coverage terms are set by RVezy, not individual hosts, so you always know exactly what you are getting before you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Piru trip plans change?
Booking an RV in Piru is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every reservation includes a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. Beyond the grace period, refund amounts depend on how far in advance of your trip you cancel. If a host needs to cancel, RVezy works with guests on refunds or rebooking credits. Pro tip: if a Santa Ana wind event or fire advisory pops up before your trip, contact RVezy support right away so they can walk you through your options.

Lake Piru Recreation Area allows leashed dogs in the developed campgrounds, though pets are not permitted on the swim beach or in the water. Pro tip: bring a long line and a shade setup so your pup can relax lakeside at your Olive Grove campsite while you cook dinner under the namesake olive trees.
lake-piru.org/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite at Lake Piru?
Yes, RV delivery in Piru is one of the best ways to start your trip stress-free, especially if you have never towed a trailer or driven a motorhome before. Many RVezy hosts in the greater Ventura County and Santa Clarita area offer delivery directly to Lake Piru Recreation Area, where they will position the RV at your reserved Olive Grove or Oak Flat site, connect available hookups, and walk you through every system. Just filter listings by Delivery and message the host with your campsite number. You show up, unpack your cooler, and start your Piru RV trip without ever touching the steering wheel.
lake-piru.org/How far can I drive on an RV road trip from Piru?
Piru is a fantastic launch pad because you're within easy driving range of some of Southern California's best scenery. Popular routes for an RV road trip from Piru include Santa Barbara wine country (about 75 miles west via Highway 126 and the 101), Channel Islands National Park gateway in Ventura (35 miles), Joshua Tree National Park (about 175 miles east), and the Sequoia National Forest gateway near Lake Isabella (roughly 160 miles north). Some hosts on RVezy offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is the smart pick for longer loops. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm their mileage policy so you can plan day trips without watching the odometer.
parks.ca.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Piru for RV camping?
RV camping in Piru centers on Lake Piru Recreation Area, with great backup options within a 30-minute radius. Olive Grove Campground at Lake Piru is the main hub, offering tent and RV sites, a full-service marina, and access to the swim beach. Oak Flat Campground sits on the lake for a quieter feel. Within a short drive you will also find Kenney Grove Park in Fillmore (about 8 miles west), Castaic Lake area campgrounds (about 15 miles east), and Los Alamos Campground at Pyramid Lake (roughly 25 miles north). Pro tip: reserve Olive Grove at least a week in advance, and earlier for holiday weekends.
lake-piru.org/When is the best time of year for a Piru RV trip?
Piru shines almost year-round thanks to its mild Southern California climate, but spring (March through May) and fall (September through November) are the sweet spot. Expect daytime highs in the 70s and low 80s, cool evenings in the 50s, and the smallest crowds at Lake Piru. Summers are hot and dry with August highs commonly in the low 90s, so families flock to the lake for waterskiing and the swim beach. Winters stay mild with December highs in the mid-60s and lows in the mid-40s, making off-season RV camping in Piru genuinely pleasant. Pro tip: October weekends are a local favorite for clear skies and warm lake water.
weather.gov/lox/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting one in Piru?
You'll do great, and Piru is actually one of the friendliest places to learn. First time renting an RV? Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup that walks you through driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and the propane system, so you're never left guessing. The drive from Highway 126 up Main Street to Piru Canyon Road is gentle and low-traffic compared to LA freeways, which makes the route to Lake Piru ideal for building confidence. You can also message any host through the listing before booking with questions. Pro tip: choose a Class B campervan or smaller Class C for your first trip, then graduate to a fifth wheel once you've got a weekend under your belt.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if something goes wrong with my RV during the trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If you are up the winding Piru Canyon Road and something goes sideways, one call gets help dispatched to your location. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app to troubleshoot quirks like the water pump or generator, and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: cell signal at Lake Piru can be spotty, so save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave the entrance kiosk.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the fuel budget for an RV trip from Piru?
Budgeting fuel for your Piru RV trip is straightforward. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes get around 8 to 12 mpg, and larger Class A coaches typically run 6 to 10 mpg. With California gas averaging higher than the national rate, plan for roughly $4.50 to $5.25 per gallon at stations along Highway 126 in Fillmore and Santa Paula, which are your closest options since Piru itself is a small town. A typical weekend loop from Piru to Santa Barbara and back (about 150 miles) costs $30 to $90 in fuel depending on rig size. Pro tip: fill up in Castaic off Interstate 5 before heading into Piru, where prices are often a few cents cheaper.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Piru?
For Lake Piru Recreation Area, reserve 2 to 4 weeks ahead for regular weekends and 6 to 8 weeks ahead for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends, which book up fast. Reservations are made through the official Lake Piru recreation website, and holiday weekends typically carry a multi-night minimum. Mid-week stays Sunday through Thursday almost always have openings, even in summer. Pro tip: pair your RV rental in Piru with a Tuesday-through-Thursday Olive Grove reservation and you will get the pick of waterfront-adjacent sites that book solid on weekends.
lake-piru.org/What are the local driving conditions like around Piru?
Driving in Piru is refreshingly easy compared to the Los Angeles metro just an hour south. Highway 126 between Interstate 5 in Castaic and the Piru exit is a flat, two-to-four lane route through citrus and avocado orchards with no mountain passes. The 6-mile climb up Piru Canyon Road to Lake Piru Recreation Area is paved with gentle curves, fine for any motorhome rental in Piru including larger Class A rigs. Watch for occasional Santa Ana winds in fall, agricultural trucks during harvest season, and deer near the lake at dusk. Pro tip: avoid driving Highway 126 westbound between 4 and 6 p.m. on weekdays when Ventura commuters head home.
dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Piru?
You will be well taken care of at the best campgrounds near Piru. Lake Piru Recreation Area offers a mix of full-hookup sites (water, electric, sewer) and a larger number of water-and-electric sites, all with picnic tables and fire rings. The main Olive Grove Campground includes restrooms with hot showers, a dump station, a general store with firewood and ice, a swim beach, and a marina nearby. Quiet hours and generator hours are posted at the entrance. Pro tip: stash a backup jug of fresh water since fills happen at designated spigots, and bring quarters in case showers are coin-operated.
lake-piru.org/What is typically included inside the RV?
RVezy rentals in Piru come ready for adventure. Expect a full kitchen with refrigerator, stovetop, microwave, sink, cookware, and dishes; a bathroom with toilet and shower in most Class B, C, and larger rigs; comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 people depending on size; air conditioning and a furnace; and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and an onboard generator or solar setup, which is handy at Lake Piru's basic sites. Wi-Fi inside the RV varies by host. Pro tip: when you message a host about a family RV trip in Piru, ask whether linens, towels, and outdoor chairs are included or available as add-ons.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Piru%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Piru typically offer popular add-ons like linen and kitchen kits, generator hours, bike racks, kayak racks, fire-pit setups, and outdoor furniture. Mileage policies vary: some include a set number of free miles per night, while others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is the move for a longer Piru RV trip looping through wine country or up the Central Coast. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Ventura County or nearby Santa Clarita, with delivery to Lake Piru widely available for a flat fee. Pro tip: read the listing's add-on list carefully before booking and bundle everything in one message to the host to confirm pricing upfront.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Piru%2C%20CaliforniaHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is simple and fully online: you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book, and your card information is never shared with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before your trip and released back to you after the host confirms the RV was returned in good shape. There are no surprise fees at pickup. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video with your host at both pickup and drop-off of your RV rental in Piru, CA, so any pre-existing dings are documented and your deposit comes back smoothly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Piru RV rental across the border to Mexico or up into other states?
You can cross state lines with your RV rental in California, so road-tripping from Piru up to Oregon's Crater Lake or east into Arizona and Nevada is fair game and a popular move. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan and roadside assistance do not extend across that border. Trips into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and listing, so message the host directly before booking to confirm. Pro tip: a great cross-state route from Piru is north on Highway 101 to the Big Sur coast, then inland toward Yosemite, a perfect 5-to-7-day loop.
