Camping near Potter Valley, California
Potter Valley sits in the inland hills of Mendocino County, about an hour by road from Ukiah and a short drive south of the Mendocino National Forest. The area functions as the staging point for trips into the Lake Pillsbury basin and the upper Eel River, with a small cluster of private resorts along Highway 20 and Blue Lakes Road to the south. RV travelers typically choose between hookup sites at lakeside resorts and rustic forest camps on PG&E and U.S. Forest Service land.
Close-in options range from PG and E Eel River Area Trout Creek Campground on the shaded banks of the Eel River, to Lake Pillsbury Resort and Marina on the west shore of the lake itself. South of town on the Blue Lakes chain, Le Trianon Resort, Narrows Lodge Resort, and Pine Acres Blue Lake Resort offer full-hookup sites, cabins, and direct lake access. The final approach to Lake Pillsbury includes a long dirt-road section, which is worth factoring into route planning.
Things to do near Potter Valley
Lake Pillsbury is the recreational anchor, covering roughly 2,280 acres with 31 miles of shoreline. Note that PG&E has closed the reservoir to motorized watercraft due to invasive mussel concerns, while non-motorized boats such as kayaks and paddleboards are still allowed after cleaning. The Blue Lakes chain south of town is spring-fed and stocked with trout, making it well suited to kayaks, paddleboards, and small fishing boats. The Eel River near Trout Creek allows swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boating in a shaded canyon setting.
Narrows Lodge Resort and Pine Acres Blue Lake Resort have their own swim beaches and boat rentals on Upper Blue Lake. Day hikes and forest roads in the surrounding Mendocino National Forest add hiking, wildlife viewing, and stargazing options once campers are settled in.

The main camping season runs from late spring through early fall. Most campgrounds at Lake Pillsbury open from May to September, with Oak Flat the notable year-round exception. Trout Creek Campground on the Eel River generally operates during the warm-weather season as well. Lake Pillsbury Resort and Marina runs full services in summer and offers limited services outside that window.
Summer is hot and dry, with daytime highs frequently in the 80s and 90s Fahrenheit and very little rain. This is peak season for lake activities and also peak fire-restriction season, so check current rules before arrival. Spring brings green hills, higher water, and good trout fishing on Blue Lakes. Fall cools quickly and can be smoky in active fire years. Winter is wet and cool, with most lakeside resorts running on reduced services and forest roads sometimes muddy or closed.
How to book a site
Reservation systems vary by operator. Camping at Lake Pillsbury is first-come, first-served with no reservations required, except for Fuller Grove Group Campground, which can be reserved through recreation.gov. Lake Pillsbury Resort and Marina takes reservations directly and books high-season stays on a Saturday-to-Saturday weekly basis, with nightly stays generally available early and late in the season; weekend-only bookings in peak summer are typically held until close to the arrival date. Trout Creek Campground is managed by a Forest Service concessionaire and takes reservations through its online booking system.
On the Blue Lakes side, Narrows Lodge Resort, Le Trianon Resort, and Pine Acres Blue Lake Resort all book direct by phone or through their websites. Summer weekends and holiday weeks at the private resorts fill early, so booking several months ahead is recommended for July and August arrivals.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into the area are narrow and rural. The final access to Lake Pillsbury includes long sections of gravel road, and the route into Narrows Lodge Resort is single-lane with enforced check-in and check-out windows so vehicles do not meet head-on. Cell service is spotty once campers leave Highway 20.
Hookups vary widely. Lake Pillsbury Resort and Marina offers a limited number of hookup RV sites alongside tent and cabin sites. Narrows Lodge Resort has full-hookup RV sites with 30-amp service and accepts vehicles up to 40 feet. Pine Acres Blue Lake Resort lists a 38-foot maximum length with a mix of full and partial hookups. Le Trianon Resort provides water, electric, a dump station, laundry, and showers. Trout Creek Campground has vault toilets and drinking water but no hookups.
