Camping near San Geronimo, California
San Geronimo sits in the wooded San Geronimo Valley of central Marin County, roughly 25 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. The town has no campground inside its boundaries, but it functions as a practical staging point for RV trips into West Marin: Samuel P. Taylor State Park lies a few minutes west along the same highway, and Point Reyes National Seashore sits beyond it on the coast.
RV travelers generally base out of full-hookup private parks rather than parking inside the federal seashore, which permits only hike-in, bike-in, and boat-in camping. Olema Campground is the closest option with full RV hookups, sitting near the junction of Highway 1 and Sir Francis Drake at the entrance to Point Reyes. Novato RV Park, Marin RV Park, Marin Park, and Golden Gate Trailer Park are clustered to the east near US-101, trading scenery for easier highway access, supermarkets, and a shorter drive to San Francisco.
Things to do near San Geronimo
Point Reyes National Seashore is the main draw, with roughly 80 miles of shoreline, beaches at Limantour and Drakes, the Point Reyes Lighthouse, elephant seals near Chimney Rock, and tide pools at Sculptured Beach. Samuel P. Taylor State Park offers redwood hikes along Lagunitas Creek, a climb to Barnabe Peak for views across Marin, and the paved Cross Marin Trail for family biking. Stinson Beach and Mount Tamalpais are roughly 30 minutes south. Point Reyes Station, about 15 minutes from San Geronimo, has grocery stores, bakeries, and oyster farms along Tomales Bay where kayak rentals are available. San Francisco, the Marin Headlands, and Muir Woods sit within a one-hour drive for day trips.

West Marin has a Mediterranean climate with a sharp wet and dry split. Summer through early fall is the dry season, with warm inland afternoons in the San Geronimo Valley and cool, foggy mornings along the Point Reyes coast. This is the busiest stretch for campgrounds: Samuel P. Taylor and Olema Campground both fill on weekends, and creekside sites at Samuel P. Taylor are usually booked months in advance.
Late spring brings wildflowers on the Point Reyes headlands and generally dry trails. Winter is the wet season, with most rainfall concentrated between November and March. Some park access closes seasonally: Lagunitas Creek use at Samuel P. Taylor is prohibited from December 1 through June 15 to protect spawning fish, and several creekside areas may close for habitat protection or storm damage. Fall, after Labor Day, is often the best balance of warm days, clearer coastal skies, and lighter campground demand.

Angel 😇 Life Saver ⛑️ Great Communication 📲📞 Informative 📚 PUNCTUAL ⏳️ Just a few words to describe this wonderful Host. When my prior host backed out and canceled on me the day of (There was no communication up til 48hrs before trip, and stopped again the morning of. I reached out for clarification and location, no response! Moments later Rveezy tells me the host is no longer comfortable with accommodating us) Evgeniy not only responed within 5min of me reachout out, but had us out and on the road to enjoy out trip within an hour. The vehicle is perfect, clean and easy to function. We had never driven or worked an RV before but his quick rundown and eargeness to answer any questions helped put out minds at ease. He is so kind, professonal, and absolutely Amazing 🤩. We will definitely rent from him again despite our extra charges for not having time to thoroughly clean out and fill up; but that was a very small price to pay for what we would have missed if he hadn't come to help us out of a pickle. How to book a site
Reservation systems vary by operator. Samuel P. Taylor State Park is booked through ReserveCalifornia on a rolling six-month window, and popular weekends are typically claimed the moment they open. Point Reyes National Seashore uses Recreation.gov for its four hike-in campgrounds (Coast, Sky, Glen, Wildcat) and its Tomales Bay boat-in sites, with three-month and 14-day booking windows that release at 7 a.m. Pacific. Note that the seashore does not allow car or RV camping, so RV travelers should book a private park. Olema Campground takes reservations directly through its own site for tent and full-hookup RV spots. Novato RV Park, Marin RV Park, Marin Park, and Golden Gate Trailer Park accept direct reservations and tend to have shorter lead times, though summer weekends still go quickly.
What to expect on the ground
Roads west of San Geronimo are two-lane and winding. Sir Francis Drake Boulevard has tight curves through the redwoods near Lagunitas, so larger Class A or fifth-wheel rigs should drive it slowly and plan fuel stops in Fairfax or Point Reyes Station. Cell service is patchy in the valley and along the coast but is usable in most developed campgrounds. Olema Campground offers full hookups, hot showers, flush toilets, a laundromat, a playground, and a dog park. Samuel P. Taylor has flush toilets and coin-operated hot showers, but its dump station and potable water fill are out of service, so RVers should plan tank service elsewhere, such as the nearby Olema Campground. Coastal mornings are cool and damp even in summer, so pack layers and expect dew on the rig.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near San Geronimo, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in San Geronimo, CA?
RV rental in San Geronimo, CA is accessible for a Marin County getaway. Expect roughly $95 to $175 per night for travel trailers and campervans, $150 to $250 for Class C motorhomes, and $250+ for larger Class A coaches, with hosts setting their own nightly rates, mileage caps, and add-ons. To find a cheap RV rental in San Geronimo, travel midweek, choose shoulder season (April or late October), or book a smaller trailer you can tow with an SUV. Filter by Instant Book and Delivery on RVezy to compare totals quickly. Pro tip: many San Geronimo Valley hosts discount weekly stays, which pairs perfectly with a slow Point Reyes and West Marin road trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=San%20Geronimo%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in San Geronimo?
Good news: a regular U.S. or Canadian driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in San Geronimo, CA. California does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for standard motorhomes, campervans, or travel trailers used recreationally. You must be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and your ID is verified securely inside the platform, so there's no paperwork hassle at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association. Most first-time renters on a San Geronimo RV trip are surprised how quickly the verification clears, often the same day you book.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/special-interest-driver-guides/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers/Is my RV rental in San Geronimo protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in San Geronimo, CA booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Sir Francis Drake Boulevard with peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle (this is coverage, not traditional insurance), and you choose your protection level during checkout, not the host. That means you decide how much extra cushion you want before driving the redwood-lined roads toward Lagunitas or Point Reyes. Pro tip: pick a higher protection tier if it's your first time renting an RV, the small daily upcharge is worth the confidence on Marin's narrow, winding routes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my San Geronimo RV rental?
You can book your San Geronimo RV trip with confidence because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy across every listing. There is a grace-period window after booking where you can get your money back, and additional refund eligibility depends on factors like how far out your trip is and circumstances such as natural disasters or wildfire evacuations, which can occasionally affect Marin County in late summer. Cancellation details are handled platform-wide rather than per listing. Pro tip: book earlier rather than later for popular weekends like Memorial Day or the Point Reyes summer season, because flexibility is greatest when you reserve well ahead of your travel dates.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in San Geronimo?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in San Geronimo is easy to find, and Marin County is one of the most dog-welcoming corners of California. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts who welcome your pup, then plan stops at Samuel P. Taylor State Park, where leashed dogs are allowed in the campground and on the Cross Marin Trail. The Cascade Canyon Open Space Preserve right in San Geronimo Valley is another local favorite for on-leash walks. Note that dogs aren't allowed on most Point Reyes National Seashore trails, but nearby Dillon Beach welcomes them off-leash. Pro tip: message the host to confirm pet fees and bring a backseat cover, they appreciate it.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=469Can the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway in San Geronimo?
Yes, RV delivery in San Geronimo is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you would rather skip driving a big rig on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard's tight curves. Many RVezy hosts in Marin County deliver directly to Samuel P. Taylor State Park, Olema Campground, or even your driveway in the San Geronimo Valley, then set up the awning, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see who offers it and their per-mile fee. Pro tip: ask for delivery to a Samuel P. Taylor site so you can spend your first afternoon hiking the Pioneer Tree Trail instead of leveling jacks.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=469How far can I drive from San Geronimo, and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got a huge playground within easy reach of San Geronimo, CA. Point Reyes National Seashore is just 15 miles west, Stinson Beach is about 25 miles south, Bodega Bay sits 35 miles north, Napa wine country is roughly 50 miles east, and Yosemite National Park is around 200 miles via Highway 580. Many RVezy hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a longer RV road trip from San Geronimo up the Pacific Coast. Pro tip: sort listings by mileage policy if you're planning a big loop through the redwoods and Sonoma Coast, the savings add up fast.
nps.gov/pore/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near San Geronimo, CA?
You're spoiled for choice with best campgrounds near San Geronimo. Samuel P. Taylor State Park (8889 Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Lagunitas) sits 3 miles away under old-growth redwoods, with 29 sites that fit RVs and trailers. Olema Campground, about 10 miles west, offers full hookups near Point Reyes. China Camp State Park in San Rafael has 30 walk-in sites along San Pablo Bay. Marin RV Park in Greenbrae provides full hookups 20 minutes south. For coastal RV camping San Geronimo travelers love, Bodega Bay RV Park is an hour north. Pro tip: Samuel P. Taylor books on ReserveCalifornia up to six months ahead, and summer weekends sell out the morning the window opens.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=469When is the best time of year for an RV trip from San Geronimo?
Late spring through early fall is the sweet spot for a San Geronimo RV trip, with September and October often the most pleasant months. Summer daytime highs sit in the upper 60s to low 80s, mornings start foggy and burn off by midday, and rain is nearly nonexistent from June through September. Winter (December to March) brings cool 50s and most of the region's annual rain, but Samuel P. Taylor stays open year-round and the redwoods feel magical in mist. Pro tip: shoulder season (mid-September to late October) means warm days, fewer crowds at Point Reyes, and the lowest rental rates of the year.
weather.gov/mtr/I've never done this before, will I know how to operate the RV?
You will be in great hands, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides an in-person orientation at pickup (or at delivery) covering the generator, propane, slide-outs, water systems, leveling, and the dump procedure, and most send a walkthrough video before your trip. You can message your host anytime through the app with questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included if anything feels off on the road. Pro tip: for a first San Geronimo RV trip, pick a Class C motorhome or small travel trailer and head straight to Samuel P. Taylor, just 3 miles away on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, so your first drive is short and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if I break down or have an emergency on the road?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing, whether you are on Highway 1 near Stinson Beach or deep in Point Reyes. Your host is also a quick message away through the RVezy app for questions about the rig itself, and RVezy customer support backs both of you up before, during, and after the trip. Cell coverage gets spotty west of Olema, so download offline maps before heading out. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone and snap a photo of the RV's VIN plate before you leave the driveway in San Geronimo.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my San Geronimo RV rental to Oregon, Nevada, or across the border?
Yes, most hosts allow interstate travel, so an RV road trip from San Geronimo to Crater Lake, the Oregon Coast, or Lake Tahoe is totally doable. Just message the host before booking to confirm out-of-state travel and any mileage adjustments. Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed with host approval and proper documentation, but travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage don't extend south of the border. Popular long-haul routes from San Geronimo include Highway 1 north to Mendocino (170 miles), Highway 395 to the Eastern Sierra (300 miles), and I-5 north to Ashland, Oregon (370 miles). Pro tip: ask early, hosts appreciate knowing your route.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a San Geronimo RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your budget, but it's manageable. Marin County gas prices typically run about $1 to $1.50 above the national average, often in the $5 to $6 per gallon range. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and large Class A rigs come in around 6 to 9 MPG. A weekend loop to Point Reyes and back (roughly 60 miles) might use $25 to $50 in gas; a week-long Highway 1 trip to Mendocino and back could run $200 to $400. Pro tip: fill up in Fairfax or San Rafael before heading west, fuel in Point Reyes Station and Olema is noticeably pricier.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near San Geronimo?
Book early and you'll get the prime spots. Samuel P. Taylor State Park opens reservations on ReserveCalifornia.com exactly six months ahead at 8:00 a.m. Pacific, and summer weekends from May through September often sell out within the first hour. Point Reyes National Seashore backcountry sites open on Recreation.gov three months ahead. Private parks like Olema Campground and Marin RV Park typically have more flexibility but still fill on holiday weekends. For a spontaneous family RV trip San Geronimo style, midweek availability is usually fine year-round. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the six-month mark at 7:55 a.m. and refresh ReserveCalifornia at 8:00 sharp, that's how locals snag the creekside sites under the redwoods.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the local driving conditions like around San Geronimo?
San Geronimo driving is scenic but takes a little awareness. Sir Francis Drake Boulevard is the main artery, winding through redwoods with tight curves and a 35 to 45 mph limit, perfectly manageable for any motorhome rental San Geronimo guests typically drive. Highway 1 north of Stinson Beach has dramatic cliffside turns where larger Class A rigs should take it slow. Summer fog can roll in thick along the coast by late afternoon, so plan coastal drives for mid-morning. Watch for cyclists on Sir Francis Drake, especially weekends, and deer at dawn and dusk. Pro tip: Caltrans QuickMap (quickmap.dot.ca.gov) shows real-time closures, helpful during winter when Highway 1 occasionally slides.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities do campgrounds near San Geronimo offer for RVs?
Expect a nice mix. Samuel P. Taylor State Park has flush toilets, coin-operated showers, potable water, fire rings, and food lockers at every site, though note the on-site dump station is currently out of service due to budget cuts. Dump and fresh-water fill are available for a fee at nearby Olema RV Resort, just 7 miles west. Marin RV Park and San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA offer full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp electric) plus Wi-Fi and laundry. Most state-park sites are dry camping, so your RV's freshwater tank is your best friend. Pro tip: top off water in Fairfax before heading into Samuel P. Taylor, and plan a mid-trip dump stop at Olema RV Resort.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=469What's typically included inside an RV rental in San Geronimo?
You'll feel right at home. A typical RV rental in San Geronimo comes with a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette or bunks, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most Class C motorhomes and campervans include a house battery and a propane or onboard generator for off-grid power, and many hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, or solar panels. TV and streaming setups vary, ask the host. For redwood camping at Samuel P. Taylor, where the canopy blocks solar, look for a listing with a strong generator or extra battery capacity. Pro tip: confirm linens and kitchen kits are included or available as add-ons.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=San%20Geronimo%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options are popular for San Geronimo RV rentals?
Hosts make it easy to customize. Popular add-ons for a campervan rental San Geronimo trip include kitchen and linen kits ($25 to $75), generator use ($3 to $5/hour), bike racks, kayaks or paddleboards (perfect for Tomales Bay), portable BBQs, camp chairs, and pet packages. Delivery and setup is the most-loved extra, with typical fees of $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location. Pickup is usually a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough at the host's driveway in Marin or Sonoma County. Mileage policies vary, 100 free miles per night is common, with $0.35 to $0.50 per extra mile. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a kayak rental and head straight to Heart's Desire Beach on Tomales Bay.
nps.gov/pore/planyourvisit/kayaking.htmHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card at booking, never directly to the host, which keeps everything documented and protected. A refundable security deposit is held (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) and released after your trip once the host confirms the rig was returned in good shape, with a full fuel and propane tank, and within mileage. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff, and use the RVezy app to log any pre-existing scratches. Pro tip: fill up the gas tank in San Anselmo or Fairfax on your way back, both are the last reasonably priced stations before returning to your San Geronimo host.
