Wilkerson camping overview
Wilkerson is a small Inyo County community in the Owens Valley, on the east side of the Sierra Nevada just south of Bishop. It sits at roughly 4,200 feet elevation, with Highway 395 forming the main north-south travel corridor between Reno and the Los Angeles basin. The area works well as an RV base because it puts travelers within a short drive of hot-spring soaks, alpine trailheads, and the Sierra crest.
RV options in the immediate area range from a historic hot-springs resort to creekside parks and high-elevation forest campsites. Keoughs Hot Springs and Campground sits just south of Bishop and offers grassy hookup sites alongside a large mineral pool. J Diamond Mobile Ranch and Creekside RV Park provide closer-in stays near town. Glacier Lodge climbs west into Big Pine Canyon for a rustic, dry-camping experience at nearly 8,000 feet. For travelers willing to drive farther west across the range, Kings Canyon National Park adds developed campgrounds inside the park boundary.
Things to do near Wilkerson
The biggest draw close to Wilkerson is soaking. Keoughs Hot Springs has operated since 1919 and features a large geothermal swimming pool plus a smaller hot soaking pool, with a snack bar, picnic area, and gift shop on site. West of town, Bishop Creek Canyon climbs to Lake Sabrina and South Lake for trout fishing, paddling, and day hikes.
Big Pine Canyon, reached from Glacier Lodge Road, leads to the Big Pine Lakes trail and Palisade Glacier, the southernmost glacier in the contiguous United States. Glacier Lodge sits just below the trailhead. Rock climbing, bouldering at the Buttermilks west of Bishop, and the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest east in the White Mountains round out a typical Bishop-area trip.

Wilkerson sits in high desert at the base of the Sierra, so seasons split sharply between the valley floor and the canyons above. Summers are hot, arid, and mostly clear; winters are cold, with snow common at elevation and occasional dustings in the valley. Summer is peak season for Bishop Creek Canyon, Big Pine Canyon, and any trip across the range into Kings Canyon. Trailheads at 8,000 to 10,000 feet stay snow-bound well into late spring.
Glacier Lodge runs a defined operating window, with closed dates from November 16 through March 31. Cedar Grove campgrounds in Kings Canyon are seasonal as well, typically running from late spring through mid-fall, while Potwisha and Azalea are the only park campgrounds open year-round. Keoughs Hot Springs and lower-elevation valley RV parks stay open year-round, making winter soaking trips practical. Fall brings cool nights, low precipitation, and aspen color in Bishop Creek Canyon; spring brings wind and snowmelt-swollen creeks.
Booking and reservations
Reservation systems vary by operator. Campgrounds inside Kings Canyon National Park are booked through Recreation.gov on a one-month rolling window: sites become available on the 15th of each month at 7:00 AM Pacific Time for the month ahead. Summer demand is extremely high, and popular campgrounds like Lodgepole fill within minutes of the window opening, so plan to book the exact morning sites release for any summer weekend.
Private parks near Wilkerson take direct bookings. Keoughs Hot Springs and Campground handles reservations by phone or its website and enforces a two-week maximum stay, with no generator use permitted. Glacier Lodge accepts bookings through partner platforms, and guests check in at the on-site general store. For Creekside RV Park and J Diamond Mobile Ranch, contact each property directly to confirm length and hookup availability.
What to expect at the campgrounds
Sites near Wilkerson trend small and rustic compared with destination resorts. Keoughs Hot Springs offers 15 sites with a 40-foot maximum RV length, 30-amp service, and 10 sites with electric and water hookups; the rest are dry. Expect grassy pads, basic facilities, and limited big-rig space. Glacier Lodge campsites do not have power, and the campground access road is narrow, steep, and tight for rigs over about 30 feet.
Big Pine and Bishop Creek canyons are active bear country, and all food, drinks, scented items, and coolers must be stored in provided food lockers day and night. Cell coverage drops quickly west of Highway 395. Bring layers: nights cool sharply even in midsummer at higher elevations, while Bishop itself sits near 4,100 feet.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Wilkerson?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Wilkerson is easy to find since most Eastern Sierra hosts welcome dogs. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy when searching the Bishop and Wilkerson area, then message the host to confirm any pet fee (often $25 to $75 per trip) and rules about shedding. Your pup will love it here: Inyo County campgrounds like Pleasant Valley, Brown's Town, and Millpond are dog-friendly with leash rules, and trails along the Lower Owens River and Buttermilk Country are open to leashed dogs. Pack a bowl, a long lead, and plenty of water, summer pavement gets hot.

Yes, RV delivery in the Wilkerson area is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who prefer to skip driving a big rig down US-395. Many Bishop-area hosts will tow the trailer or motorhome straight to Pleasant Valley Campground, Brown's Town, or Millpond, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. Delivery fees typically run a per-mile rate from Bishop, and some hosts offer free delivery within a set radius. Filter for Delivery on the search page, then message your host with the campsite name and number to confirm setup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wilkerson%2C%20CaliforniaHow far can I drive, and what mileage policies should I expect?
You have plenty of road ahead of you. Most hosts near Wilkerson include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles typically priced around $0.30 to $0.45 each, and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer Eastern Sierra loops. That is usually enough for the classic Wilkerson RV trip: Mammoth Lakes is about 45 miles north, Mono Lake roughly 100 miles, Yosemite's Tioga Pass entrance around 100 miles, and June Lake about 65 miles. Planning a bigger loop to Lake Tahoe or Sequoia? Message the host before booking to discuss a mileage package.
nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tioga.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Wilkerson for RV camping?
You are spoiled for choice with RV camping near Wilkerson and across the Owens Valley. Pleasant Valley Campground (about 7 miles north of Bishop, low nightly fee, year-round Owens River fishing, accommodates large rigs) is a local favorite. Brown's Town Campground just south of Bishop on US-395 offers shaded sites with hookups next to the golf course. Brown's Millpond Campground has RV sites with electric and water hookups by Millpond County Park. For a higher-elevation summer escape, Bishop Park Campground sits on Bishop Creek at about 8,400 feet (smaller rigs only). Pleasant Valley and Millpond stay open in winter, perfect for chasing trout.
inyocounty.us/services/parks-recreationWhen is the best time to visit Wilkerson in an RV?
The sweet spot for an RV trip from Wilkerson is mid-April to late May and again from mid-September through October, when valley-floor highs sit in the 70s and 80s and the High Sierra passes are typically clear. July and August deliver hot, dry days (often 95 to 100F) with cool 50s nights, perfect for stargazing, but plan AC time at lower elevations. Winter (December to February) brings sunny days in the 50s and cold nights into the 20s, ideal for trout fishing on the Owens River. Fall foliage in Bishop Creek Canyon peaks in early October and is one of California's best-kept secrets.
weather.gov/rev/I have never rented an RV before. Is it easy to drive around the Owens Valley?
You will do great, the Owens Valley is one of the friendliest places in California for first time renting an RV. US-395 is a wide, well-maintained highway through Wilkerson and Bishop with gentle grades, generous shoulders, and easy pull-offs. Your host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, leveling, dumping, and slide-outs, and you can text them anytime during your trip. If you are nervous about the drive, choose a campervan or smaller Class C, or book delivery so the RV is waiting at your campsite. The hardest part is choosing where to stop for the view.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What if something breaks down during my trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking near Wilkerson includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on US-395, a dead battery at Pleasant Valley, or a propane issue near Mammoth is one quick phone call away from help. Your host is also your first point of contact for any quirk specific to their RV, and most respond within minutes. For mechanical service, Bishop has full-service RV shops on North Main Street. Tip: snap a photo at pickup of every system, it makes troubleshooting calls fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Wilkerson?
You are sitting at the heart of one of America's best RV corridors. A classic RV road trip from Wilkerson runs north on US-395 to Mammoth Lakes (about 45 miles), June Lake Loop (about 65 miles), and Mono Lake (about 100 miles). Heading south brings you to Alabama Hills in Lone Pine (about 60 miles) and Death Valley National Park (about 130 miles southeast). For a bucket-list loop, head west over Tioga Pass into Yosemite (about 100 miles, open roughly late May to October). Cross-border trips to Mexico are not permitted on RVezy rentals, but Nevada is wide open. Confirm any out-of-state plans with your host before booking.
nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/directions.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on an Eastern Sierra RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, so plan smart. Expect a Class C motorhome to get 8 to 10 mpg, a campervan 14 to 18 mpg, and a tow vehicle plus travel trailer about 10 to 12 mpg. Gas in Bishop typically runs above the California average, so top off in Mojave or Lone Pine if you are coming from the south, or Carson City if you are coming from the north. For a typical 5-night loop covering 400 miles, budget roughly $180 to $320 for fuel. Tip: Vons and Costco-affiliated stations in the region usually have the lowest local prices, and there is limited fuel between Lone Pine and Olancha, so do not run it close.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy-data/california-retail-fuel-outletHow far in advance should I reserve a campground near Wilkerson?
Plan ahead and you will land the best sites. For Inyo National Forest campgrounds like Bishop Park or Big Pine Creek, reservations open up to 6 months ahead on Recreation.gov and peak summer weekends can fill within hours. Inyo County campgrounds (Pleasant Valley, Brown's Town, Millpond) take reservations during the off-season and switch to first-come, first-served in the peak summer months, so plan to arrive Thursday for weekend stays. BLM's Pleasant Valley Pit Campground is always first-come, first-served and a great backup. Holiday weekends and Mule Days in late May book up fastest, so set a calendar reminder.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2989What driving conditions should I expect around Wilkerson?
Driving around Wilkerson is straightforward and scenic. US-395 is a divided highway through the Owens Valley with truck-friendly grades, generous turnouts, and minimal traffic outside summer holidays. The main things to watch: strong afternoon crosswinds (especially in spring), elevation changes when climbing toward Mammoth or Tioga Pass, and winter chain controls on side roads like Highway 168 up to Lake Sabrina. Chains are rarely needed on US-395 itself. Avoid steep, rough side roads like Buttermilk Road or Coyote Flat in a rental RV. Check Caltrans QuickMap before you go, and you will cruise the valley easily.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities do campgrounds near Wilkerson actually have?
Most local campgrounds have what you need, with a range from full-hookup to dry camping. Brown's Town and Brown's Millpond offer full or partial hookups (water, electric, some sewer), hot showers, and laundry, ideal for longer stays. Pleasant Valley Campground has vault toilets, potable water, fire rings, and picnic tables but no hookups or showers. Public RV dump stations are available at Brown's Town for a small fee. Cell service is solid in Bishop and Wilkerson on Verizon and AT&T, spottier at higher Bishop Creek campgrounds. Practice bear-aware food storage, it is active bear country in the Sierra.
fs.usda.gov/inyoWhat's included inside the RV when I rent in Wilkerson?
Your RV rental in Wilkerson arrives ready to roll. Expect a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower in most Class B, C, and travel trailer rentals, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig, climate control with AC and furnace, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Many hosts include a starter kit with linens, towels, pots, pans, and dishes; some add a generator, outdoor chairs, or a propane grill. TVs and WiFi hotspots are common in newer listings. Cell-based WiFi works well around Bishop but drops in canyons. Each RVezy listing's amenity list is detailed so you can match the rig to your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wilkerson%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available?
You can customize your motorhome rental in Wilkerson with popular add-ons many hosts offer: bedding and kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, generators, bikes, kayaks, and even Starlink WiFi on premium listings. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Bishop or surrounding Owens Valley communities, with delivery available to local campgrounds. Mileage policies vary by listing, from 100 miles per night up to unlimited, so check the listing details before booking. One-way trips are possible with some hosts; message them with your pickup and drop-off plan before reserving so they can quote a relocation fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wilkerson%2C%20CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host in cash. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is authorized on your card before the trip, then released after a clean return with no new damage or excessive mileage charges. To avoid surprises on your Wilkerson trip, do a thorough video walkaround at pickup with your host, return the RV with fuel and propane at the agreed level, and dump the tanks if your agreement requires it. Bishop has dump stations available before drop-off.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Wilkerson in winter, and is it worth it?
Yes, a winter RV rental in California's Owens Valley is a hidden gem. The Bishop and Wilkerson area sits around 4,100 feet with sunny days in the 50s and crisp nights in the 20s from December to February, ideal for year-round trout fishing on the lower Owens River, soaking at Keough's Hot Springs, or snowshoeing in Bishop Creek Canyon. Look for RVs with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a working furnace; message the host to confirm winterization. Plug in at Brown's Town or Brown's Millpond for 30-amp shore power to keep things toasty. Mammoth Mountain ski resort is about 45 miles north, so you can ski by day and warm up in your rig by night, a memorable family RV trip combo.
