Campgrounds and RV parks near Tulare, CA

The biggest draw is the drive east into Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The General Sherman Tree, the world's largest tree by volume, sits about two miles from Lodgepole Campground in the Giant Forest area, and the Moro Rock and Tokopah Falls trails are within easy reach. Sequoia National Park is also home to Mt. Whitney, the tallest peak in the contiguous United States, and the surrounding region draws hikers, bird watchers, and wildlife enthusiasts. Closer to Tulare, the Kings River corridor offers fishing, paddling, and swimming holes during warmer months. Downtown Visalia, a short drive north, has restaurants, theaters, and a year-round Saturday farmers market. Families with younger kids can use the in-town KOA's pool and playground as a low-key base between park days.

The valley around Tulare runs hot and dry in summer and mild and wetter in winter. July is typically the warmest month, with average highs near 97°F, while December is usually the coldest, with average highs near 57°F. The area receives roughly 11 inches of precipitation a year, most of it falling between November and April, and snow at valley elevations is essentially nonexistent. For park-focused trips, timing matters. Potwisha in the foothills and Azalea in Grant Grove are the only two campgrounds in Sequoia and Kings Canyon that stay open year-round; most higher-elevation campgrounds operate roughly late spring through fall. Lodgepole, the most popular sequoia-area campground, has some sites available in late April and is typically fully open from late May to late September, with some sites remaining into mid-October depending on weather. Spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for combining valley camping with day trips into the mountains. Summer brings reliable park access but very hot afternoons in the valley itself.

Valley RV parks near Tulare are flat, paved or graveled, and built for easy access off Highway 99. Expect full hookups, pull-through sites, laundry, and small stores at the larger resorts. The KOA north of town offers grassy, shaded pull-through RV sites with full hookups, camping cabins, and tent sites, plus Wi-Fi, a heated swimming pool, a kids' playground, guest laundry, and a camp store. Up in the parks, conditions shift. Lodgepole has paved roads, flush toilets, drinking water, picnic tables, fire rings, and bear food storage boxes at each site, but no hookups, and accommodates RVs up to 42 feet. A dump station and water station are available in season but closed roughly mid-October to mid-May. Bears are active, so all food and scented items must go in the metal lockers.
