Campgrounds and RV parks near Turlock, CA

Water access drives most trips. The Merced River at McConnell State Recreation Area is popular for swimming, wading, and fishing for bass, catfish, and perch from shaded sycamore and cottonwood banks. George J Hatfield State Recreation Area sits at the confluence of the Merced and San Joaquin rivers and offers river fishing, kayaking, and wading. Off the water, the Castle Air Museum in Atwater displays a large collection of historic military aircraft, with RV sites on the property. Yosemite National Park sits within day-trip range to the east via Highway 132 or Highway 140, and the foothill towns of Waterford, La Grange, and Coulterville make easy side trips. Turlock Lake State Recreational Area is currently closed and not available for day use or camping.

The Central Valley climate is Mediterranean: hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Spring and fall are generally the most comfortable windows for camping, with daytime highs in a workable range and rivers still running cool. Summer brings extended heat, with daily highs commonly in the mid-90s Fahrenheit and triple-digit days not unusual. Shaded oak and sycamore campgrounds along the Merced are noticeably more tolerable than open lots, and a working RV air conditioner matters from June through August. Winter is the wet season. Most rainfall arrives between November and March, dense valley fog (tule fog) is common on winter mornings, and river flows can rise quickly during storm cycles. McConnell State Recreation Area and George J Hatfield State Recreation Area remain open year-round, though some facilities may be reduced during the off-season. Turlock Lake State Recreational Area is closed to camping and day use under the current agreement and is not expected to reopen before summer 2027 at the earliest.

The state recreation areas in this area are rustic. McConnell State Recreation Area has 21 primitive sites that accommodate tents and RVs and trailers up to about 30 feet in length, with picnic tables, fire rings, food lockers, drinking water, flush toilets, and coin-operated showers; there are no individual site hookups, but a dump station is available on site. Generator use is restricted to daytime hours. George J Hatfield State Recreation Area is similarly rustic, with leashed pets allowed in the campground but not on trails or beaches. For full hookups (water, electric, and sewer), Castle Air Museum RV Park offers a small number of full-hookup pull-throughs plus additional dry-camping spaces, and Kit Fox RV Park LLP provides full-service sites. There are no lifeguards on the rivers, so families should plan accordingly.
