Campgrounds near Coleytown
Coleytown is a village within Westport in Fairfield County, Connecticut, close to Long Island Sound and within driving distance of state parks in the Litchfield Hills and campgrounds on Long Island. RV renters using Coleytown as a base can reach public campgrounds in three different systems: Connecticut state parks, New York state parks, and the National Park Service.
In the Litchfield Hills, Lake Waramaug State Park Campground occupies 95 acres in Kent and Black Rock State Park sits in Watertown along Route 6. Kettletown State Park lies on the eastern shore of Lake Zoar in Southbury, though the campground has been closed since 2024 flood damage and remains closed for the 2026 season; the day-use trails are open.
Across Long Island Sound, Heckscher State Park on the Great South Bay and Watch Hill Campground within Fire Island National Seashore provide coastal alternatives reachable by bridge or ferry from the mainland.
Things to do in the area
At Kettletown, day-use activities include hiking over six miles of trails, picnicking, and fishing, with scenic overlooks of Lake Zoar. Black Rock State Park adds swimming, hiking on the Mattatuck Trail, and pond fishing.
Lake Waramaug State Park Campground is oriented around the water, with car-top boating, swimming across the road from the campsites, lake fishing, and cycling on the popular loop around the lake.
On Long Island, Heckscher State Park offers bay swimming at West Beach, four miles of paved multi-use trails for hiking and biking, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding. Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island offers ocean beach access, a lifeguarded beach, a visitor center, ranger-led programs, and access to the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness.

Connecticut state-park campgrounds operate on a compressed season. Lake Waramaug typically opens the weekend before Memorial Day and closes in mid-October, with cabins available for rent on Fridays and Saturdays only and not offered after Labor Day weekend. Black Rock follows a similar late-spring to mid-October pattern. Kettletown State Park Campground has been closed since heavy rainfall in August 2024 damaged access roads and the campground bridge, and remains closed for the 2026 season; day-use areas including the Miller Trail are open.
Summer weekends draw the heaviest demand, especially around Independence Day and Labor Day. Lake-view sites at Waramaug book out first, and weekday arrivals typically see more availability.
Fall foliage peaks in the Litchfield Hills from early to mid-October, when vivid color reflects off the lake surface at Waramaug. Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island runs from mid-May to mid-October, tied to ferry schedules, and coastal storms can force closures in late summer and early fall.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Easy pick up and drop off. Joe and Kim go over and above to make sure your experience with the vehicle is a positive one.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to book near Coleytown
Connecticut state-park campgrounds, including Lake Waramaug and Black Rock, are reserved through ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance, so popular summer weekends should be booked as early as the window opens.
New York state parks such as Heckscher use the ReserveAmerica-powered New York State Parks system, with a nine-month rolling booking window and same-day reservations accepted until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival.
Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island is operated by concessioner Love Watch Hill and Sailors Haven, so reservations are made through the concessioner rather than Recreation.gov, which only handles backcountry sites in the Otis Pike Wilderness. RV renters should plan to leave the rig at the mainland ferry terminal in Patchogue.
What RV renters should expect
Sites at Connecticut state parks are back-in only and vary in length. At Lake Waramaug, sites accommodate RVs and trailers up to roughly 25 to 35 feet in a back-in configuration. Hookups are limited across the Connecticut system, so plan on generator hours and dump-station stops.
Two rules trip up first-time renters at Connecticut state parks: alcohol and pets are both prohibited in the campgrounds. Plan pet care in advance and leave alcohol off the packing list.
Check-in is enforced. The camp office closes daily at 9:00 p.m., and campers must be on site by 8:45 p.m. to check in. A refundable security deposit is collected at check-in in cash or check, and the maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights. Firewood and ice are typically sold on site.
